How to Block a Website in Google Chrome: 6 Helpful Methods

Chrome can block site behaviors such as notifications and pop-ups, but broader website blocking requires a different approach. Compare six methods and choose the right one for personal, family, or work use.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To block a website in Google Chrome, first decide what you mean by “block”: stop its notifications, prevent pop-ups, restrict a specific permission, or stop the site from opening. Chrome’s built-in site settings handle the first three, but they do not create a general ban on visiting a site. For broader restrictions, use an extension for your own browsing, Family Link for a child’s managed account, or administrator-managed URL rules for work or school.

The right method depends on who controls the browser and how difficult the restriction needs to be to bypass.

1. Block notifications from a website

Use this if a site keeps sending Chrome alerts and you still want to be able to visit it. Blocking notifications stops that site from sending Chrome notifications; it does not prevent the site from loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security → Site Settings → Notifications.
  3. Under Not allowed to send notifications, add the site or move it into the blocked list.

Google’s Chrome notifications instructions cover changing notification access. Menu labels may vary slightly across devices and Chrome versions.

2. Block pop-ups and redirects

Use this for unwanted pop-up windows or redirects, not to stop every page on a site from opening. Chrome blocks pop-ups by default, but you can check the setting or add a site to the blocked list.

  1. In Chrome, open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy and security → Site Settings → Pop-ups and redirects.
  3. Confirm pop-ups and redirects are blocked, and add the site under the blocked list if needed.

Some sites use pop-up windows for legitimate functions, such as opening a sign-in or payment window. If one of those features stops working, add only the needed site to the allowed list. See Google’s instructions for blocking or allowing pop-ups in Chrome.

3. Change a specific site permission

Chrome lets you control what a site can do, such as access your camera or location. This is useful when you want to deny a particular capability while keeping the site available; it is not a full website block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the site in Chrome.
  2. Select the site information control beside the address in the address bar.
  3. Choose Site settings.
  4. Change the permission you want to restrict.

You can also manage permission categories for all sites through Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings. Google’s site permissions help explains these controls.

4. Use an extension for a personal blocklist or schedule

If you want to stop yourself from opening selected sites, an extension may offer a blocklist or time limits that Chrome’s built-in permissions do not. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing for BlockSite describes custom blocklists and scheduled blocking; StayFocusd describes restricting time on selected sites.

These are examples, not independent endorsements. Store descriptions report advertised features and do not establish an extension’s privacy, safety, or effectiveness. Before installing, review the current permissions it requests, its privacy practices, developer information, and whether the listing is still available. Extensions generally suit self-managed browsing; they are not a tamper-proof way to control someone else’s browser.

5. Manage a child’s Chrome access with Family Link

For a child using a managed Google Account, Family Link provides site allow/block controls for Chrome and can let a parent review a child’s request to visit a blocked site. Follow Google’s current Family Link guidance for managing websites in Chrome to configure the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows, Mac, or Linux, Google warns that a child may sign out, switch Chrome profiles, or use another browser where Chrome-specific Family Link controls do not apply. Treat these settings as parental controls for the managed account, not tamper-proof enforcement across the device.

6. Use administrator-managed URL filtering at work or school

Organizations can configure URL blocklists and allowlists for managed Chrome browsers and ChromeOS devices. This is an administrator control, not a setting for an ordinary unmanaged Chrome profile. Google describes these as basic URL-management controls and advises administrators to review how allow exceptions interact with broader blocked sites before deploying rules.

Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help says, “If you need stronger filtering, use a content-filtering web-proxy server or extension.” Stronger filtering may be appropriate when basic URL policies are not enough. Administrators should consult the full Chrome Enterprise URL blocklist and allowlist policy documentation and avoid casually blocking internal Chrome URLs.

Which method should you choose?

Method What it restricts Who controls it Best fit
Notifications Notification delivery from a site, not site access Chrome user Stopping alerts while retaining access
Pop-ups and redirects Pop-ups and redirects, not every page on the site Chrome user Reducing intrusive windows or redirects
Site permissions A selected capability, such as camera or location access Chrome user Restricting what a site can do
Extension Features such as custom blocklists or time limits, as advertised by the extension Chrome user who installs it Personal blocking and schedules
Family Link Site access in a child’s managed Chrome account Parent or family manager Parental controls, with the desktop limitations described above
Enterprise URL policies URL access on organization-managed Chrome browsers or ChromeOS devices Organization administrator Work or school restrictions

If you simply want fewer alerts, change notifications or pop-ups. If you need the site not to open, choose a blocklist extension for your own browsing, Family Link for a child’s managed account, or ask the organization’s administrator about managed policies. The last two depend on account or device management; built-in site permissions are not a substitute for URL blocking.
