How to Block a Spammy User on a GitHub Security Advisory

GitHub lets authorized people block users from public-repository security advisory descriptions or comments without removing the advisory.

To block a spammy or abusive user from a GitHub security advisory, open the three-dot menu on the advisory description or the offending comment and choose the block action. Review GitHub’s confirmation before proceeding. The action is available on security advisory pages in public repositories, with permissions depending on who owns the repository.

Where to find the block action

  1. Open the security advisory in an eligible public repository.
  2. Open the three-dot menu on the advisory description or on the comment you want to address.
  3. Select the block action and review the confirmation message before confirming.

GitHub’s August 25, 2026 changelog describes this as blocking a user directly from a security advisory page in a public repository owned by an organization or a personal account. The confirmation explains what blocking means. GitHub Changelog · GitHub Community announcement

The feature is not described as available to every repository member. The announcement specifies public repositories; it does not establish availability for private repositories.

What happens to the advisory?

Blocking removes the source of spam or abuse while leaving the security advisory itself intact. GitHub says it added the option because advisories contain user-created content and can attract spam or abuse; the new action brings a streamlined moderation path already used for issues and pull requests to advisory pages. GitHub’s announcement does not provide a quantified measure of the feature’s effect.
