How to Benchmark Hosted Browsers for Screenshot and Automation Workloads

A practical method for comparing hosted browsers with fixed workloads, stage-by-stage timing, screenshot validation, repeated trials, and clear limits on vendor comparisons.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Benchmark hosted browsers by timing connection, page creation, navigation, application actions, and screenshot completion separately, then report end-to-end time alongside success rate, latency spread, and throughput at a declared concurrency. Keep the URL, region, browser, readiness condition, viewport, screenshot settings, and run schedule fixed. A result from one page or one vendor’s configuration is evidence about that setup—not a universal speed ranking.

Define the workload before comparing providers

A useful benchmark represents the jobs your team actually runs. A blank page or a single fast public URL can confirm that a connection works, but it cannot stand in for JavaScript-heavy pages, application flows, or the screenshot modes used in production.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Build a small representative job set

  • Include the page types that matter: static pages, JavaScript-rendered pages, and any meaningful navigation or interaction path.
  • Use stable targets where possible. If pages change over time, record their version or relevant state so a content change is not mistaken for a provider speed change.
  • Include the actual screenshot scope used in production: viewport, full page, selector, or clip.
  • Keep a simple fixed public URL as a smoke test if helpful, but report it separately from representative workload results.

Freeze the comparison variables

For every provider and run, record the URL, region, browser engine and version when available, automation library and version, viewport and device scale, locale or timezone if relevant, wait condition, screenshot parameters, concurrency, timestamp, and whether the browser connection is cold or reused. Use equivalent settings across providers where their APIs allow it, and disclose differences you cannot eliminate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Region is especially important: network distance to the browser service and the target site can affect elapsed time. Browserless’s connection documentation recommends using a nearby region to reduce latency and lists region-specific endpoints: Browserless connection URL documentation.

Time the full job in attributable stages

Connection time alone does not describe how quickly a browser service completes a screenshot or automation task. Timestamp each stage so you can identify whether delay comes from session startup, page creation, the target page, your actions, or image capture.

  1. Connect: start the timer before opening the remote browser connection and stop when the session is usable.
  2. Create a page: measure opening a new tab or page separately.
  3. Navigate: measure from navigation start to a clearly named readiness condition.
  4. Run application actions: time any clicks, form entry, authentication, or other work your real job requires.
  5. Capture: measure screenshot invocation through completion, then separately record output persistence if saving or transferring the image is part of the production path.
  6. Validate and finish: record whether the task produced the expected page state and a usable image; calculate total end-to-end time.

Browserless’s published harness measures connection, page creation, and navigation. Screenshot workloads should add capture timing and output validation. Browserbase’s hosted-session example similarly separates navigation from the subsequent full-page screenshot call: Browserbase screenshot guide.

Choose and disclose page readiness

“Navigation finished” is ambiguous unless you say what event or condition ends the timer. A DOM-ready event can occur before a page has finished painting content needed for a screenshot. Choose a condition that reflects the task, then apply the same rule to each provider.

  • For a simple page, a documented navigation event may be adequate.
  • For application pages, prefer a meaningful application signal, such as a required element becoming visible, when that is how production knows the page is ready.
  • If you add a fixed delay, record its duration and include it consistently.
  • Do not silently mix “navigation complete” timing from one run with “page visually ready” timing from another.

Browserbase’s guide uses Playwright navigation with waitUntil: "domcontentloaded" and cautions that pages which paint late may need an application-specific readiness signal. Measure screenshot completion after the chosen readiness condition, not as a substitute for defining it.

Make screenshot settings part of the test definition

Capture options change both the work performed and the resulting file. Record the exact settings in the benchmark, and align them across services wherever possible.

  • Scope: viewport, full page, selector, or clip coordinates.
  • Image behavior: whether images are awaited, the output format, quality when applicable, and whether the background is included.
  • Timing: capture timeout and any additional wait used before capture.
  • Output checks: confirm the file exists, has plausible dimensions, and reflects the expected page state.

Browserless’s screenshot API documents options including fullPage, clip, selector, waitForImages, output type, quality, timeout, and optimizeForSpeed. Its API documentation also describes capture beyond the viewport and background behavior: Browserless screenshot API. These options are workload controls, not incidental implementation details.

Repeat trials and report distributions, failures, and throughput

One mean can hide unstable runs and slow outliers. Repeat runs on a published schedule, state the trial count, and report the distribution and operational outcomes. There is no neutral sample-count or concurrency standard established by the sources cited here, so choose a count appropriate to your workload and disclose it rather than implying a universal threshold.

  • Separate cold connections from reused sessions if both occur in production.
  • Declare concurrency and test it as a named profile; do not compare single-session latency with an unstated load test.
  • Report completed jobs, failures, timeouts, retries if used, and throughput as well as latency.
  • Include median and a high-percentile or other explicit tail-latency measure, plus the run count and spread. If reporting averages or fastest/slowest runs, label them as such.

Interpret published provider comparisons narrowly

Browserless’s January 1, 2026 article reports a Puppeteer comparison of Browserless, Anchor Browser, Browserbase, and Hyperbrowser. It describes repeated measurements of connection, page creation, and navigation, reporting averages as well as fastest and slowest observations. The article is published by Browserless’s founder, so its competitive figures should be read as a vendor’s account of one configuration, not as independent or universal rankings. Browserless itself notes that geography and workload can change results and invites readers to run its harness with their own URLs and configuration: Browserless benchmark article.

Stage and provider Reported average
Connection — Hyperbrowser 692.5 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Connection — Browserless 936.4 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Connection — Browserbase 1,929.9 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Connection — Anchor Browser 5,582.4 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Navigation — Browserless 166.2 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Navigation — Hyperbrowser 251.1 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Navigation — Browserbase 317 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)
Navigation — Anchor Browser 401.6 ms (Browserless-reported, 2026 comparison)

Those figures do not establish screenshot-capture speed, concurrency saturation, results in other regions, performance on your sites, or behavior across every plan. The cited comparison does not provide independent confirmation. Treat it as an example of reported observations; reproduce the workload and settings that matter to your team before making a purchasing decision.

Compare hosted and self-hosted deployments on operational fit

A hosted browser service and a self-hosted browser are different deployment choices, not just interchangeable endpoints. Include the deployment mode in the results and compare the operational capabilities that matter alongside timings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compare cold startup and session reuse, page creation, navigation, screenshot correctness, failure and timeout rates, and tail latency under stated concurrency.
  • Record region placement relative to both your application and the websites being visited.
  • Check browser engine/version control, session persistence, debugging access, and the controls your workflow needs.
  • Evaluate deployment effort and current pricing or service limits directly from provider terms before drawing a cost conclusion.

Browserless documents cloud browser endpoints as well as a self-hosted Docker image with Puppeteer/Playwright connectivity and screenshot APIs. This makes self-hosting a relevant comparison when deployment control is a requirement; it does not by itself establish a speed or cost advantage. Comparable current pricing, plan limits, and neutral reliability data across the providers discussed here are not established by the cited material, so do not infer a cost-per-job or SLA winner from these timing figures.

Run the benchmark on your own workload

Use the same harness logic and settings for each provider, substituting that provider’s supported connection endpoint and credentials. The browser API details differ; do not treat the example endpoint or provider-specific launch options as portable.

  1. Choose representative URLs and define exactly what “ready” means for each.
  2. Set region, browser/runtime, viewport, screenshot options, concurrency, and cold-versus-reused behavior.
  3. Instrument timestamps around connection, page creation, navigation, actions, capture, and output validation.
  4. Run repeated trials on a stated schedule, saving the settings and raw observations alongside each result.
  5. Publish distributions, success/failure counts, throughput, and the limits of the comparison.

Illustrative Playwright timing harness

This Node.js example shows the measurements to collect once a provider-specific Playwright connection is available. Set BROWSER_WS_ENDPOINT to that provider’s documented WebSocket endpoint and TARGET_URL to a stable page you are authorized to test. The code performs one cold connection and one full-page PNG capture; repeat it under your declared schedule and add production actions and provider-specific screenshot options as needed.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';

const endpoint = process.env.BROWSER_WS_ENDPOINT;
const url = process.env.TARGET_URL;
if (!endpoint || !url) throw new Error('Set BROWSER_WS_ENDPOINT and TARGET_URL');

const ms = () => Number(process.hrtime.bigint()) / 1e6;
const t0 = ms();
const browser = await chromium.connectOverCDP(endpoint);
const connected = ms();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1365, height: 768 } });
const pageCreated = ms();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
const navigated = ms();
// Replace with a task-specific readiness signal when DOM readiness is insufficient.
const image = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
const captured = ms();
await writeFile('benchmark.png', image);
const persisted = ms();
console.log(JSON.stringify({
  connect_ms: connected - t0,
  new_page_ms: pageCreated - connected,
  navigation_ms: navigated - pageCreated,
  screenshot_ms: captured - navigated,
  save_ms: persisted - captured,
  end_to_end_ms: persisted - t0,
  bytes: image.length
}, null, 2));
await browser.close();

The example intentionally uses a navigation event, not a guarantee of visual completeness. For a page that renders late, replace the comment with an application-specific readiness check and record that check in your results. Validate image dimensions and page state in the harness if those are part of acceptance. For concurrency testing, orchestrate a declared number of independent jobs and count failures and completions; do not simply launch unbounded work.

Common benchmark problems and fixes

  • Connection looks slow, but the cause is unclear: record the region and connection reuse state; separate connection setup from page creation and navigation.
  • Providers appear to navigate at different speeds: check that the same readiness condition is used, and that late application rendering is not excluded on one service.
  • Screenshot timings vary sharply: verify that scope, image waiting, format, quality, and timeout match; validate the output rather than timing only the API call.
  • Averages look good while users see delays: report a tail-latency measure and failures alongside the median, and inspect run-level observations.
  • Load results cannot be reproduced: state concurrency, run schedule, trial count, and whether sessions are cold or reused.
  • A vendor’s chart conflicts with your test: compare its URL, region, browser/runtime, configuration, and measured stages with yours; results from a different setup need not agree.
  • No meaningful cost comparison is possible: verify current plan limits and prices for the exact deployment and workload; timing data alone does not establish cost per successful job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the fastest browser connection mean the fastest screenshot service?

No. Connection setup is only one stage; page creation, page readiness, capture, and successful output can change the end-to-end result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a standard number of trials or concurrency for this benchmark?

The cited material establishes no neutral standard. Choose a schedule that reveals variability for your workload and publish the run count and load profile.
