Benchmark a browser-based operating system with three separate kinds of tests: repeatable responsiveness workloads, memory measurements taken during realistic use, and compatibility checks for the websites and features people actually need. Record the device, OS build, browser version, workload, and test conditions; report typical results and variation rather than declaring a universal winner from one score.
Decide what “speed” means for your comparison
A browser-based OS can feel slow for reasons that a browser benchmark alone will not reveal. Separate browser-app responsiveness from whole-system behavior, and decide whether you are measuring one or both. ChromeOS performance guidance considers boot time, website loading, graphics smoothness, and device interactions, illustrating why a single browser score cannot represent the entire experience (Chromium OS Performance Philosophy).

- Browser responsiveness: How quickly web applications respond to user actions under a defined workload.
- Real-world browsing: How the specific pages and workflows your audience uses load and behave.
- Whole-system experience: Boot, graphics, input, connectivity, and other interactions that influence perceived responsiveness.
Name the exact OS builds and device models being compared. When possible, install each OS on the same physical device so hardware does not become a confounding variable. If different machines are necessary, report their differences and do not attribute every score difference to the OS.

- Fix the conditions. Keep browser version, power state, display settings, background activity, and workload version consistent. Record the test date and device configuration.
- Choose workloads that answer your question. Use a browser benchmark for responsiveness, then add representative websites and workflows. Include graphics or computation tests only if those tasks matter to the intended audience.
- Choose a network mode. A live page load includes network variability; it is not an isolated measurement of browser or OS speed. If using Crossbench, state whether runs used a live, replayed, or local network mode. Crossbench documents repeated benchmark runs and supports Chrome/Chromium, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, including remote benchmarking on Linux and ChromeOS (Crossbench).
- Repeat each run. Run the same test more than once under the same conditions. Report a median or another clearly named summary and show the spread. Do not choose only the fastest result.
Measure web-app responsiveness with more than one workload
Speedometer 3 is designed to measure web-application responsiveness across a broader range of workloads and was developed collaboratively across browser vendors. Treat its result as evidence about that benchmark workload—not a prediction that every website or interaction will feel equally fast. Its authors note that a small set of tests cannot simulate the whole web.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Pair the benchmark with a short set of representative workflows. For each, use the same starting state and actions on each OS/browser combination. Record page loading separately from interactions when network conditions could affect the result. If you add a graphics or computation benchmark, explain which real task it represents; avoid accumulating unrelated scores that do not answer the reader’s question.
Measure memory during realistic use
An idle reading just after startup is not enough to describe memory use. Chromium’s documented memory benchmark stories cover scenarios such as page loading, browsing, backgrounding, multiple tabs, longer sessions, and media playback. Many of those stories force garbage collection and then trigger a memory dump, so the measurement point affects what the number means (Chromium Memory Benchmarks).

- Capture a consistent baseline before opening the test workload.
- Run each scenario relevant to your intended use—for example, active browsing, several tabs, a backgrounded browser, or media playback.
- Capture the result at a defined point, such as after a fixed session duration or after the workload’s cleanup and dump step.
- State whether the figure is browser-only or system-wide, and describe any forced garbage collection or other cleanup before capture.
Do not compare a post-cleanup memory dump on one system with an in-session reading on another. Label each number with its scenario and measurement timing so readers can tell what it represents.

A benchmark score does not establish that a website or feature works. Make a checklist of the websites and functions your audience depends on, then perform the same workflows on each OS/browser combination.

Record a pass or a specific limitation for each item, along with the device, OS build, and browser version. The Web Platform Tests project provides resources for browser-platform testing, but no single suite establishes compatibility with every website. For claims about a particular service, test that service’s actual workflow.
Use the same comparison axes for every system
| Axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Web-app responsiveness | Benchmark name and version, repeated results, summary statistic, and variation. |
| Real-world browsing | Fixed sites and user actions; separate page-load results from network conditions where possible. |
| Memory | Baseline and workload-specific result, browser-only or system-wide scope, and snapshot timing. |
| Graphics and interaction | Smoothness or functional result under the same workload and display conditions. |
| Compatibility | Passes and specific limitations for each required site, feature, and device. |
| Test context | Device, OS build, browser version, power state, network mode, and run date. |
Qualify ChromeOS Flex results
If your comparison includes ChromeOS Flex, identify whether the PC model is currently certified. Google says certain functions are guaranteed on certified models, while other tested features are not guaranteed across every model; functionality and performance on non-certified models cannot be guaranteed across updates (About ChromeOS Flex certified models).
