How to Monitor Website Availability and Page Performance with Screenshots

Monitor a website in layers: check that its endpoint responds, run browser-based tests for critical user journeys, measure performance, and use screenshots to show what the browser actually rendered. No single layer proves the whole site is healthy. A successful HTTP response does not guarantee that assets loaded, JavaScript ran, or a visitor could complete a task.

Choose checks that match what users need

Availability, browser behavior, performance, and real-visitor experience are related but distinct. Combine them so an alert tells you whether a server stopped responding, a page failed to render, a task broke, or users are experiencing a slowdown.

Layer What it checks What it does not prove
HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP availability check Whether a configured endpoint responds and meets status or response-content criteria. Whether page assets loaded, JavaScript executed, or an interaction works. Google Cloud says its public uptime checks do not load page assets or run JavaScript. Google Cloud uptime checks.
Scripted synthetic browser test Whether a browser or script can carry out a defined journey, such as signing in or checking out, and its execution time. Every visitor’s actual conditions or every possible user path. Google Cloud’s synthetic monitoring documentation describes periodic scripted tests and collected results including success or failure, execution time, logs, and metrics. Google Cloud synthetic monitoring overview.
Lab performance measurement Repeatable measurements under controlled test conditions, useful for diagnosing changes. How all real visitors experience the page across devices, networks, and locations.
Real-user monitoring (RUM) Field data from actual visitors, which can reveal differences by browser, device, or geography when segmented. A controlled, repeatable reproduction of a problem.
Screenshot evidence A visual record of what a browser rendered during a check, useful for diagnosing unexpected content or layout changes. By itself, successful functionality, a performance score, or a universal pass/fail tolerance for visual differences.

Lab and field measurements answer different questions: lab runs help catch and diagnose changes under repeatable conditions, while RUM shows what visitors actually encounter. Use both where possible. web.dev’s measurement guidance explains the distinction.

Build a monitoring plan around critical pages and journeys

Start with endpoint checks

Check the public URLs and endpoints users depend on, not only the homepage. Configure the expected response status and, where supported, response-content criteria. A status-only check can miss a response that technically succeeds but contains an error page or incomplete service response. Google Cloud describes public checks from multiple locations and supports alerting on failed checks; its documentation also covers configuring status and content requirements. See the Google Cloud uptime-check documentation.

Add browser tests for important tasks

Use scripted synthetic monitoring for actions that a plain request cannot validate. Choose a small set of business-critical flows, such as login, search, or checkout, and make each test assert the outcome that matters—not merely that a button was clicked. Google Cloud’s overview gives login and ecommerce checkout as examples of scripted synthetic tests. Read the overview.

Record failure details such as the failing step, execution time, logs, and a screenshot where available. Keep test accounts and data safe: use dedicated credentials, avoid real customer transactions, and ensure a repeated test will not create unwanted side effects.

Measure performance separately

Track user-focused metrics in repeatable lab runs and compare them with field measurements. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long it takes for the largest visible image, text block, or video to render. Google/web.dev guidance accessed in 2026 recommends evaluating the 75th percentile separately on mobile and desktop: an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less is good, while above 4 seconds is poor. These are performance thresholds, not uptime targets. LCP guidance from web.dev.

Do not interpret one screenshot or one successful run as a complete performance measurement. A screenshot can help explain what appeared; metrics and repeated measurements are needed to assess speed.

Use screenshots to investigate, not as the sole verdict

Capture the page or relevant element during browser checks so responders can see whether the expected content rendered, a consent overlay obscured the page, or the layout changed. Lighthouse supports element screenshots that can help inspect UI associated with user-experience metrics such as layout shifts. web.dev Lighthouse guidance. The cited guidance does not prescribe a universal screenshot interval, visual-diff tolerance, or retention period; set those according to how often the page changes and how long incident evidence needs to remain available.

Configure alerting and choose coverage deliberately

An alert is useful only if its check represents a service users need. Define what counts as failure—status, response content, synthetic journey assertions, or a performance threshold—and route failures to someone who can act. Tune checks to distinguish a brief transient failure from a persistent incident without delaying detection of a genuinely broken critical flow.

When comparing monitoring options, evaluate these capabilities rather than relying on a single uptime number:

  • Check type: HTTP/HTTPS/TCP endpoint checks versus real browser or scripted journey coverage.
  • Geography: Where checks run and whether locations match the audience or infrastructure risks you care about.
  • Browser and conditions: Supported browser, device, and network conditions for synthetic runs.
  • Evidence: Which metrics, logs, and screenshots are retained and accessible when a check fails.
  • Alerting: Failure criteria, notification routes, and integrations available to the team.
  • Field data: Whether RUM is available alongside synthetic testing, and whether it can segment results by browser, device, or geography.

For context, Pingdom describes uptime checks from 100+ locations, page-speed analysis, transaction monitoring, and RUM segmentation by browser, device, and geography on its product page. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not an independent ranking. Pingdom product page.

Use ScreenshotNeo when you need a screenshot endpoint

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can provide visual evidence for monitoring workflows, but a screenshot response is not a substitute for endpoint checks, scripted assertions, performance metrics, or RUM. Its capture options include full-page shots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport choices, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, and wait conditions. You can turn off individual cleanup steps if a capture needs to preserve the original page state.

Or skip the browser setup

Request a screenshot with one GET call. Create an API key first, then replace YOUR_API_KEY and the target URL as needed. For the full parameter reference, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be switched off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot misleading results

The endpoint check passes, but the page is broken

This is expected when the check tests only the server response. Add a browser-based synthetic test that loads the page, waits for the necessary content, and asserts a meaningful result. Capture a screenshot to help identify what rendered.

The browser test fails intermittently

Inspect the failed step, logs, timing, and screenshot before changing alert thresholds. Determine whether the cause is a real dependency failure, unstable test data, timing assumptions, or an overly broad selector. Wait for a specific element or state rather than relying on a fixed delay alone, and use a dedicated test account or safe test data.

The screenshot looks correct but users report slowness

A screenshot is a visual snapshot, not a speed metric. Compare lab measurements with RUM, and segment field data by device, browser, or geography where available. Review LCP at the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop against the web.dev thresholds cited above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The visual diff reports changes that are not failures

Dynamic content, rotating banners, timestamps, and personalization can vary between captures. Decide which regions and states matter, stabilize test inputs where possible, and treat a visual difference as a cue to inspect rather than proof of a defect. No universal visual-diff tolerance is established by the cited guidance.

Keep monitoring reliable and cost-aware

  • Test the smallest set of critical journeys that catches consequential failures; every scripted step adds maintenance and another possible source of test instability.
  • Use endpoint checks for fast, simple availability signals and browser tests where rendering or interaction matters. Avoid treating the cheaper or simpler check as equivalent coverage.
  • Choose check locations, run frequency, evidence retention, and alert thresholds based on operational needs. There is no universal screenshot interval or retention policy established by the cited guidance.
  • Review failing checks and test scripts when pages, authentication, or dependencies change. An obsolete assertion can generate noise or miss a real regression.
  • Keep screenshots, logs, and performance measurements linked to the relevant check and incident so responders can compare evidence over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot prove my website is available?

No. It shows what a browser rendered at capture time. Pair it with endpoint checks and, for interactive workflows, scripted assertions.

Should I use synthetic monitoring or real-user monitoring?

They complement each other: synthetic tests provide repeatable checks of selected journeys, while RUM reflects actual visitor conditions.

What LCP value should I aim for?

Google/web.dev guidance accessed in 2026 classifies LCP at or below 2.5 seconds as good and above 4 seconds as poor, assessed at the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop.
