To become an administrator on a V Rising server, put your 17-digit SteamID64 on its own line in the server’s adminlist.txt, enable the in-game console, join the server, open the console with ~, and run adminauth. A successful response grants Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges. The exact file location depends on whether the server is self-hosted or managed through a hosting panel.

What you need before changing anything
This procedure applies to a dedicated V Rising server. You need access to the server’s files (local disk for a self-hosted installation or a provider’s file manager for a hosted server), permission to stop and start the server, and the Steam account that should receive admin access.

- Use the account’s SteamID64, not a character name, display name, or the legacy
STEAM_0:1:...identifier. - Edit the server’s active
adminlist.txt; changing a similarly named file in an unused installation directory has no effect. - Enable the console in the game client before attempting
adminauth. - If you are playing a solo or private game, this dedicated-server step is normally unnecessary;
adminlist.txtis for server administration.
How the permission system works
V Rising associates administrative rights with SteamID64 values stored in adminlist.txt. The server does not match the entry to a player’s in-game name. Each authorized account is represented by one 17-digit number, and each number must occupy its own line.
Adding the number to the file does not by itself open the admin interface in your current game session. After the file is saved (and, as a cautious default, the server is restarted), you still have to join the server and authenticate through the client console with adminauth.

Step 1: Find your 17-digit SteamID64
- Open the Steam profile for the account that should become an administrator.
- Copy the numeric SteamID64 associated with that profile. A Steam profile URL that displays the numeric identifier is the simplest source; an established Steam-ID lookup service can also resolve it.
- Confirm that the value contains 17 digits. Do not paste a name, a vanity URL, an account nickname, or an identifier beginning with
STEAM_0:. - Keep the value available while editing the server file. Copying it directly avoids transcription errors, which are the most common reason authentication fails.
If the profile uses a custom vanity URL, the visible URL may not contain the numeric ID. Resolve the profile to its SteamID64 first rather than guessing from the account name.
Step 2: Locate the active adminlist.txt
The directory is determined by the server’s persistent-data setting and by the way the server is hosted. Use the path that belongs to the running instance, not necessarily the directory where the executable was downloaded.

When more than one copy exists
Duplicate files are common after changing launch options, migrating a world, or reinstalling the server. Compare the timestamps and contents of the candidate files, then identify the persistent-data path in the server’s launch configuration. If the server creates a new adminlist.txt after startup, that newly created file is a strong indication that you were editing the wrong location.

On a hosted service, use the panel’s save-data directory or its documented configuration area rather than searching the provider’s underlying machine. You generally cannot access the host’s global installation directories.
Step 3: Edit adminlist.txt correctly
- Stop the server if your host requires files to be changed while it is offline, or if you want to eliminate the possibility of the process overwriting the file during a save.
- Open
adminlist.txtas plain text. A basic text editor is sufficient. - Enter the complete SteamID64 on a line by itself.
- Put additional administrators on separate lines, one ID per line.
- Save the file as exactly
adminlist.txt. Do not let the editor append.txta second time, and do not save it as a rich-text document.
A valid file contains numeric IDs only, separated by line breaks. Do not add player names, quotation marks, commas, comments, bullets, or explanatory text. For example, this is the required shape:

76561198000000001The numbers above illustrate the format only; use the real SteamID64 values for your administrators. Preserve any existing authorized IDs unless you intentionally want to remove their access.

Step 4: Apply the file change
Guides disagree about whether a running server notices an edited list immediately. Because the behavior can vary by build and hosting panel, the safe procedure is to save the file, stop the server cleanly, and start it again. On a hosted service, follow the panel’s stop/start controls and any warning about scheduled saves.
If your provider explicitly documents hot-reloading for this file, you may follow that instruction, but restarting remains the dependable fallback when adminauth does not recognize a newly added ID.
Step 5: Enable the in-game console
- Launch V Rising and remain at the main menu.
- Open Options.
- Go to General.
- Turn on Console Enabled. The wording or exact placement can vary between game versions.
- Apply the setting and join the server whose
adminlist.txtyou edited.
Enabling the console is a client-side prerequisite. A correctly edited server file will not make adminauth work if the console remains disabled.

Step 6: Authenticate as an administrator
- Join the target server with the Steam account whose ID you added.
- Press the tilde key, shown as
~on many keyboards, to open the console. On keyboards with a different layout, use the key assigned to the console if the game displays a different binding. - Type
adminauthexactly, with no quotation marks, and submit the command. - Read the console response. A success message indicates that the account has Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges for that server session.
Run the command after joining the server, not at the main menu and not in a chat box. If the console is visible but the command produces no authorization, work through the diagnostic checks below.
How to confirm that access worked
The immediate confirmation is the successful response from adminauth. You can then open the administrative controls or run the administrative commands available to your server build. If those controls remain unavailable, treat the authentication as unsuccessful even if the file appears correct.
- Confirm that you joined the same server whose files you edited; similarly named worlds can make an otherwise correct setup appear broken.
- Check that the logged-in Steam account matches the SteamID64 on the line.
- Run
adminauthagain after reconnecting if the server was restarted while your client remained open.
Troubleshooting adminauth
The command is unknown or cannot be entered
- Return to the main menu and verify that Console Enabled is checked under Options > General.
- Make sure you opened the developer console with
~, rather than typing the command into ordinary chat. - Reconnect after changing the console setting; some client versions do not expose the console until the next session.
The console opens, but authorization fails
- Recheck the ID’s length and characters. It must be the 17-digit SteamID64, not the
STEAM_0:1:...format. - Open the file and inspect the exact line for spaces, punctuation, quotes, or a copied profile name.
- Verify that the ID is on its own line and that the editor saved the file to the active
Settingsdirectory. - Restart the server, reconnect, and run
adminauthagain.
A typo or wrong identifier format is the most frequent cause of failure. Copying the ID again from the Steam profile and replacing the entire line is safer than trying to correct individual digits.
The file looks right, but the server still ignores it
- Look for another
adminlist.txtunder a different persistent-data path. This often happens when a launch option was changed or a hosting panel uses a separate save directory. - Check the file name and extension. Windows may hide extensions and leave you with
adminlist.txt.txt. - Confirm that the account running the server can read the file and that the hosting panel actually saved the edit.
- Use the host’s documented restart sequence instead of only restarting the game client.
One community discussion reported adminauth failing even when an ID appeared in the list and mentioned checking debug flags in ServerHostSettings.json. That is an anecdotal suggestion, not an official fix; do not change unrelated server settings unless you understand their effect and have a backup.
You edited a hosted server but have no local file
Hosted servers keep their files on the provider’s machine. Open the panel’s file manager, locate save-data/Settings/adminlist.txt, save the ID there, and use the panel’s restart control if required. If the panel supplies a dedicated administrator field, use it only when the provider states that it writes to the same server setting; otherwise, the file manager is the authoritative place to edit.

You are playing solo or a private local game
Solo and private games generally do not require a dedicated server administrator list. If you are following this guide for a local session, first determine whether a separate server process is actually running. Adding an ID to a dedicated-server file will not change permissions in a game that never reads that file.
Adding, removing, and protecting administrator access
Adding another administrator
Obtain that player’s SteamID64 and append it as a new line. Do not replace existing entries unless you intend to revoke them. Have the person join with the matching Steam account and run adminauth after the server has loaded the edited file.
Removing an administrator
Stop or otherwise safely pause the server according to the host’s procedure, delete only that person’s SteamID64 line, save the file, and restart the server. The change prevents future authentication; it does not rename or delete the player’s character or world data.
Protecting the file
- Limit file-manager or operating-system access to trusted operators.
- Keep a backup before changing the list, especially on a server with several administrators.
- Never publish the administrator list in screenshots, support posts, or public configuration archives.
- Review the list after migrations and launch-option changes so an old copy does not become the active one.
Self-hosted versus hosted: the practical difference

Complete procedure in one pass
For a normal dedicated server, the reliable sequence is: resolve the correct 17-digit SteamID64; find the active Settings/adminlist.txt; add the number alone on one line; save and restart the server; enable Console Enabled under Options > General; join the server; press ~; and submit adminauth. If the command fails, check the ID format and the active file path before changing any other server configuration.
