To become an administrator (operator or “OP”) on a Hytale server, join the server once so your account is registered, then run op add <username> or op add <UUID> from the server console or from an account that is already an operator. For a persistent setup, Hytale’s official guidance recommends editing the server’s permissions.json file while the server is stopped. Command names and JSON layouts are still changing during Early Access, so confirm the syntax shown by /help on your build before applying it.

What OP status gives you
Hytale uses operator status—usually called OP—for elevated server permissions. An operator can moderate players, use administrative commands, build without normal limits and configure server features or plugins that require elevated access. OP is a server-side permission, not a special Hytale account type, and it applies to the player identity that the server records.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere are two durable ways to grant it:
- Command grant: use the console, or an existing operator, to run
op add. This is normally the quickest route. permissions.jsonedit: add the player to the server’s permission data. Hytale’s official instructions identify this as the permanent, recommended method.
Single-player guides also describe starting with --allow-op and using an OP command, but that shortcut is reported as temporary and its exact command form is not consistent across guides.
Before you grant administrator access
Make sure the server has seen your account
Start the server and connect with the exact account you intend to administer. Joining once causes the server to create the player record that it can associate with a username or UUID. If you try to grant a name that has never joined, the command may not resolve to the identity you expect.

Obtain the access you need
You need one of the following:
- Access to the dedicated server console through your host’s control panel or terminal.
- An in-game account that already has operator privileges.
- FTP or file-manager access to the server folder if you are using the
permissions.jsonmethod.
Do not edit permission data while the server is writing files. Stop the server first, make a backup, and only then change the file.
Use the syntax your build exposes
The available commands are version-sensitive. Hytale is in Early Access, and published guides disagree on several forms. Enter /help in the console (or the equivalent help command available in your interface) and use the spelling and argument order listed by your installation. The examples below show the forms most commonly reported, not a guarantee that every build accepts all of them.
Method 1: Grant OP with the console or an existing operator
This is the fastest approach for a multiplayer server because it does not require hand-editing JSON.
Step 1: Join the server once
- Start the Hytale server and wait until it has finished loading.
- Connect with the account that should become an administrator.
- Leave the connection open, or note the exact username shown by the server.
Step 2: Run the grant command
In the dedicated-server console, enter:
op add <username>
Replace <username> with the player name exactly as the server displays it. If your host or build exposes UUID arguments, you can instead use:
op add <UUID>
Some consoles accept the command without a leading slash; in chat, a leading slash is commonly required. Follow the format shown by /help. An already privileged operator can run the same command from in-game if that command is enabled for operators.
Step 3: Look for confirmation
A successful grant should produce a confirmation line. One third-party host guide reports a message equivalent to “[username] is now an operator!”; wording can differ by build. If there is no confirmation, check the console for an unknown-command, player-not-found or permission error instead of assuming the grant worked.

Step 4: Test the new permission
- Disconnect and reconnect the account if the server does not update permissions immediately.
- Run a harmless administrative command listed in your build’s help output.
- Confirm that the command succeeds only for the intended account.
A command grant is convenient, but do not assume every release stores it in exactly the same place or applies it without a reconnect. If the status disappears after a restart, use the permanent file method below and verify the generated file structure.
Method 2: Add yourself in permissions.json (permanent route)
Hytale’s official guidance describes editing permissions.json in the root of the server folder and labels this route as the permanent recommendation. The exact JSON structure has been reported differently by third-party guides, so the file generated by your own server is authoritative for its version.
Step 1: Stop the server cleanly
- Tell players the server will be unavailable.
- Use the host panel’s Stop control or the server’s normal shutdown command.
- Wait until the process has fully exited and file writes have finished.
Guides disagree about whether a live edit is noticed immediately. Stopping first avoids a running process overwriting your change and is the safer procedure.
Step 2: Back up the existing file
In the server’s root directory, make a copy of permissions.json, such as permissions.json.backup. Keep the backup outside any automatic sync or deployment step if possible. If the server fails to start after the edit, restoring this copy gives you a quick recovery path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 3: Open the generated JSON
Use FTP or your host’s file manager to download and open the file in a text editor that preserves plain UTF-8 text. Do not paste a layout from an unrelated tutorial over the whole file. The file is reported to be generated on first launch, and its sections can differ between Early Access builds.
Commonly described layouts include a users section keyed by player UUID and an OP group that uses a * wildcard. Those descriptions are not interchangeable templates. Identify the corresponding user or group already present in your own file, then make the smallest change that matches its existing brackets, commas and quotation marks.

Step 4: Add the correct identity
Use the UUID or user entry that belongs to the account you joined with. If your file uses a user-to-group mapping, add your UUID to the appropriate operator group. If it uses a named OP group with a wildcard, follow that group’s existing syntax rather than inventing a new key. Preserve the file’s indentation and do not leave a trailing comma after the final item.
Step 5: Save, validate and upload
- Save the edited file as
permissions.json, not as a rich-text document or a second extension such as.txt. - Check that braces and brackets are balanced and that every key and string uses double quotation marks.
- Upload the file back to the server root, replacing the original only after the backup exists.
A JSON syntax error can prevent the server from starting. If your host provides a JSON validator, use it before uploading; otherwise compare every changed line carefully with the surrounding structure.
Step 6: Restart and verify
- Start the server and watch the startup log for permission-file or JSON errors.
- Join with the account you added.
- Run a low-risk command from
/helpto confirm operator access.
If startup fails, stop the process, restore the backup and start again. Then inspect the generated file on your build or use the command method instead.
Finding your UUID when a name is unreliable
A UUID avoids problems caused by capitalization, renamed accounts or duplicate-looking names. Guides point to two ways to find it:
- Run the server’s
/uuidcommand if that command appears in your build’s help output. - Inspect the
universe/playersfolder. Player JSON files there are reported to contain the associated username, allowing you to identify the correct UUID-named file.
Use only the UUID belonging to your own account. Copy it exactly, including all hyphens, and keep it inside the JSON string where the file format expects a string.
Single-player and temporary OP shortcuts
Several guides describe a solo or local-server shortcut: launch Hytale with the --allow-op option, then run /op self in the console or chat. Other guides list /op @s for solo mode. These forms are contested and are not confirmed as universal commands.

Use this workflow only when your own build documents it:
- Close Hytale and add
--allow-opto the launcher or server startup arguments exactly as your installation supports them. - Start the local session.
- Check
/help, then try the supported self-targeting OP command. - Test the permission in that session.
Reports describe this access as temporary: it may not survive a normal restart. For a persistent local server, use the generated permissions.json instead. Do not assume that a command accepted in a single-player session is valid on a hosted dedicated server.
Removing OP access
The most commonly reported removal form is:
op remove <username or UUID>
One guide lists /deop <player> instead. Check /help for the command your build supports, then verify removal by reconnecting the player and testing a command that should no longer be available.
If you granted OP through permissions.json, remove the corresponding UUID or group entry while the server is stopped, preserve valid JSON syntax, restart and test. A command removal may not undo a separate permanent entry in the file.

Command and configuration choices at a glance
| Approach | Typical form | Persists after restart? | Access required | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Console or existing operator | op add <username or UUID> |
Build-dependent; verify after a restart | Console access or an existing OP | Names and syntax can differ; the target must be recognized |
| Server permission file | Edit generated permissions.json |
Intended as the permanent method | FTP or file-manager access | Malformed JSON can stop startup; layouts vary |
| Single-player shortcut | --allow-op plus a supported self-op command |
Reported as temporary | Control of local launch arguments | /op self and /op @s are not consistently documented |
Troubleshooting failed OP grants
“Unknown command”
Run /help and check whether the command is named op, requires a slash, or uses a different argument order. Do not cycle through undocumented variants on a live server; command syntax is still changing during Early Access.
“Player not found”
Connect the account first, then copy the exact displayed name. If the name still fails, locate the UUID through /uuid or the universe/players folder and use the UUID form supported by your build.
Best Value
The command succeeds but permissions do not change
Reconnect the player, check the server log for a confirmation line, and test a command listed in /help. If access vanishes after a restart, make the change in permissions.json while the server is stopped.
The server will not start after editing JSON
Restore the backup immediately. A missing comma, extra comma, mismatched brace or invalid quote is enough to break parsing. Start the server with the untouched file, compare your edit with the layout generated by that build, and reapply only a minimal, validated change.
The JSON file does not match an online example
That is possible because guides show different layouts and the file is generated by the server. Do not merge sections from several examples. Treat your own generated file as the schema and use the official permanent-file procedure rather than copying an older template.
Security practices for server operators
- Give OP only to accounts that need it; operator commands can affect every player and world setting.
- Prefer UUIDs when the command and file format support them, because they identify the account more reliably than a display name.
- Keep a dated backup before every permission-file edit.
- Make changes during a maintenance window and watch the startup log afterward.
- Test with a harmless command before using destructive moderation or world-management commands.
- Review the operator list after staff changes and remove former staff with the supported removal command or file edit.
What to verify on your Hytale release
The instructions above reflect Early Access-era guidance and may change with updates. Before relying on a procedure, verify three things on the server you actually run:
- Which OP grant and removal forms appear in
/help. - Whether the server accepts a username, UUID, or both.
- What structure your generated
permissions.jsonuses and whether a restart is required for changes.
If you have console access, use op add after the player has joined. If you need a durable, auditable configuration, stop the server and edit its own permissions.json with a backup and a syntax check. That combination avoids relying on a temporary single-player shortcut or on a JSON template written for another build.
