How to Batch Encode Videos with FFmpeg on Ubuntu for YouTube Live in India

A practical Ubuntu workflow for batch-encoding videos with FFmpeg, selecting YouTube Live settings, and pacing prerecorded files for live playout.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batch encoding prepares video files; live playout sends them to YouTube in real time. Treat those as separate stages: encode a batch offline without artificially slowing the conversion, then use FFmpeg’s -re option when sending a file as a live stream. For a broadly compatible starting profile, use H.264 video and AAC audio, with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published encoder settings do not specify a separate India profile; your upload connection at the actual broadcast location is the practical constraint.

Before you start: check channel access and prepare your files

YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computer. Mobile eligibility is a separate case: YouTube’s Android mobile-streaming page lists a 50-subscriber minimum, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the last 90 days, and that initial activation may take up to 24 hours. Do not apply the mobile subscriber threshold to encoder streaming from Ubuntu. YouTube’s mobile streaming guidance also mentions India in connection with Playables availability, which is not an India-specific encoder rule.

Inventory the inputs

Before encoding, check each file’s duration, dimensions, frame rate, audio presence, and orientation or aspect ratio. Decide whether to preserve individual source frame rates or deliberately normalize the batch to one profile. Do not silently stretch the image or assume every input has audio. Mixed or unusual sources may need different handling rather than one universal command.

Choose a profile your connection can sustain

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends different H.264 bitrates by resolution and frame rate. These are ingest targets, not a promise that a particular network can sustain the stream or that a higher number automatically improves every source. Test outbound capacity from the location you will broadcast and leave room for network variation. The guidance does not establish an India-only bitrate or FFmpeg setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table is the reference for the current profile.

YouTube Live settings to use as an FFmpeg starting point

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport where supported. The published settings allow H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps. For a broadly compatible workflow, this example uses H.264 and AAC; codec availability depends on the FFmpeg build installed on your Ubuntu release.

H.264 output profile YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 21 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps 42 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps 50 Mbps

For comparison, YouTube’s minimum H.264 figures include 6 Mbps for 720p30, 12 Mbps for 720p60, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. Recommended rates differ for HEVC and AV1; for example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 with those codecs. Use the table for the selected codec and mode rather than carrying H.264 values across codecs. The recommendations above are YouTube’s published guidance reviewed October 3, 2026, not measured upload speeds.

Other useful output characteristics

  • For SDR, YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709, 8-bit, square pixels, and progressive scan.
  • For stereo audio, its guidance specifies AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps. Confirm the source’s audio layout before choosing output settings.
  • With constant frame rate output, a two-second GOP is approximately twice the frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. FFmpeg’s -g sets the maximum GOP size.

FFmpeg documents bitrate options and GOP controls in its all-options reference. YouTube’s profile guidance remains the source for target rates and ingest requirements.

  1. Use Ubuntu’s software/package guidance for your specific release to install the ffmpeg package. Package versions and build capabilities can vary; no single release-specific version or installation command is established here.
  2. In a terminal, run ffmpeg -version to see the installed version and build configuration.
  3. Run ffmpeg -encoders and check for the encoder you plan to use, such as libx264. If it is not present, use a build that includes it or select an encoder supported by your build and verify YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance.

The Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg manpage reference is available at Ubuntu’s FFmpeg manpage; verify commands and package details against your own release.

Batch encode a directory of files

Make a separate output directory

Keep encoded files separate from originals to avoid overwriting source material. This Bash loop handles spaces in filenames, writes MP4 outputs under encoded, and reports failures. It does not claim to normalize every source or handle all unusual input layouts.

This illustrative command targets a 1080p30 H.264 rate profile and a two-second GOP if the source/output is 30 fps. It is not a tested universal preset. The command does not scale, force a frame rate, or ensure a particular audio channel layout. If sources vary, inspect them and add deliberate scaling or frame-rate conversion only when appropriate. For a 60 fps constant-frame-rate output, set the GOP to about 120 frames for a two-second interval. Adjust bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer settings for the chosen profile; the values above are a starting example, not a guarantee of stream health.

Keep offline encoding distinct from streaming

Do not add -re to ordinary offline batch conversions just to mimic a live stream. FFmpeg’s -re input option reads a file at its native frame rate and is useful when simulating a live input. Use it in the later playout command, not as a necessary speed limit for creating encoded files. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Send a prepared file to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live setup, create or select the live stream and retrieve the current ingest URL and assigned stream name/key. Use the values shown for that stream, not an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube documents primary RTMP and RTMPS addresses and separately supplied stream names in the LiveStreams API reference.
  2. Prefer the RTMPS ingest address when available. Keep the stream key private; do not paste a real key into a public script, screenshot, or article.
  3. Run FFmpeg with real-time pacing on the prepared file. Replace the placeholders locally with the current YouTube ingest URL and stream name/key:
ffmpeg -re -i "encoded/video.mp4"
  -c:v copy -c:a copy
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME"

This playout example assumes the encoded file already has video and audio codecs and parameters accepted by the selected ingest profile. YouTube’s API notes that an encoder may receive the ingest address and stream name separately or as a combined STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. If copying the prepared streams produces an ingest warning, inspect the file and use an explicit encode configured for the intended profile rather than assuming a container or codec is suitable. Do not expose the credential while troubleshooting.

Rehearse and monitor stream health

  • Test a representative file with comparable movement and audio, not just a static title card.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the rehearsal and broadcast. A recommended bitrate cannot compensate for an upload connection that fluctuates or an unsuitable source profile.
  • Confirm that audio is present, in sync, and at the intended channel layout; check that the picture is not stretched or unexpectedly cropped.
  • Verify that the live setup is receiving the stream before relying on the workflow for a scheduled event.

Only stream material you have the necessary rights to use, and make sure the content complies with YouTube’s rules. YouTube’s encoder settings page covers technical ingest configuration, not a guarantee that particular content is permitted.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream does not connect: Recheck the current ingest address and stream name/key in the live setup, the RTMP/RTMPS choice, and the outgoing network path. A stale or mistyped key cannot be fixed by changing encoding bitrate.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with YouTube’s table. Test upload capacity at the broadcast location and reduce the selected profile if the connection cannot sustain its target reliably.
  • Keyframe interval warning: Set the GOP relative to the actual output frame rate. At 30 fps, -g 60 is about two seconds; at 60 fps, use about 120 frames. Keep the interval within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • Batch files fail or produce unexpected output: Review each input’s properties and the FFmpeg error output. Mixed frame rates, absent audio, unusual codecs, and inconsistent aspect ratios may require per-file handling; the example loop is not a universal media-normalization pipeline.
  • Live playout runs too fast: Ensure -re is attached to the file input in the streaming command. It is for real-time file playout, not ordinary offline batch conversion.
  • Encoder is unavailable: Check ffmpeg -encoders and the installed build. Ubuntu package/build capabilities are release-dependent.

Or let it run in the cloud
