Those are different jobs. A converted MP4 is a video file—not a live stream—so configure YouTube’s live encoder settings separately when you send the program to YouTube.
Choose separate MP4s or one joined program
First decide what the finished folder should contain:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- One output per source: transcode every input independently. This is the safer choice for a folder with mixed codecs, resolutions, frame rates, or audio layouts.
- One continuous program: join clips in playback order. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when inputs are compatible; otherwise normalize the clips or use the concat filter with re-encoding.
FFmpeg commands below are starting points. Exact options depend on the operating system and shell, FFmpeg build, source media, and intended output. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the libx264 encoder; FFmpeg documents it as its x264 H.264 encoder wrapper (FFmpeg libx264 documentation).
Batch-convert each video separately
Use a separate output directory
Run one FFmpeg job per input and write outputs somewhere other than the source folder. This avoids processing newly created files on a later run, preserves originals, and lets each source be encoded independently.

For a single file, the basic command is:
ffmpeg -i "input.ext" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac "output.mp4"
Replace the filenames with your paths. The extension in input.ext is only a filename clue; it does not tell you the actual video or audio codec. This example selects H.264 video, a broadly compatible 4:2:0 pixel format, and AAC audio, but it does not set a target resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or quality level.
Loop over a folder in a POSIX shell
For files directly inside an input directory, a shell loop can create a corresponding MP4 in a separate output directory:
mkdir -p output
for f in input/*; do
[ -f "$f" ] || continue
name=$(basename "${f%.*}")
ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac "output/$name.mp4"
done
This example is for a POSIX-style shell, such as Bash. It treats every regular file in input as a candidate, so use a narrower file pattern or add a media-file check if the folder includes documents or other non-video files. It does not recurse into subfolders. Quoting paths protects names containing spaces, but filenames that differ only by extension can map to the same output basename; check for collisions before running.
Choose encoding and audio options deliberately
Do not assume one preset is ideal for every source. Decide the output dimensions, frame rate, quality or bitrate, and audio handling based on the source set and how the files will be used. If some inputs have no audio stream, explicitly handle that case rather than assuming -c:a aac can produce audio from every file. If you need to retain multiple audio or subtitle streams, review stream mapping rather than relying on defaults.

Join clips into one MP4
Use the concat demuxer only for compatible inputs
Create a text file in the intended playback order, for example list.txt:
file 'clip-001.mp4'
file 'clip-002.mp4'
file 'clip-003.mp4'
Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac output.mp4
The concat demuxer reads packets sequentially; it is not a general-purpose way to merge arbitrary videos. FFmpeg requires the inputs to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or whether a stream is present can prevent direct concatenation or cause timing issues. The example transcodes the resulting video and audio, but it does not make incompatible demuxer inputs compatible before they are read.

Prefer simple relative paths in the list where practical; use less restricted paths only in a trusted, controlled list. FFmpeg also notes that timestamp adjustment uses each input’s duration, so inaccurate duration metadata or differences between stream durations can lead to artifacts or gaps. Inspect the joined file and watch transitions, not just the beginning.

Normalize or re-encode when clips differ
If the clips do not meet the concat demuxer’s stream requirements, first normalize them to compatible codecs, stream presence and layout, time bases, and other relevant parameters. Alternatively, use FFmpeg’s concat filter with re-encoding to join inputs that need conversion. The filter approach entails encoding work, but it is intended for joining through a re-encode workflow. Consult FFmpeg’s joining-files FAQ and concat demuxer documentation for syntax and requirements; inspect and test the result, especially where clips meet.
Set YouTube Live ingest separately from MP4 conversion
A saved H.264 MP4 is an input asset. It does not become a live stream until a streaming workflow sends an encoded feed to YouTube. For that live feed, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings because platform recommendations can change.
H.264 live video bitrate examples
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live video bitrates on its guidance accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not guaranteed results. Choose a source-appropriate resolution and frame rate, and ensure the available upload capacity can sustain the stream.
| Live resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
Other live-encoder details
YouTube’s guidance also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio, progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. These settings concern the feed sent to YouTube, not a universal batch-conversion preset. Match the live output to your source and check the official guidance for the full, current table.

Test before the event with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages for warnings or dropped frames (YouTube encoder guidance; YouTube Live Control Room troubleshooting).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse upload recommendations with live settings
For stored uploads, YouTube recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC among its listed audio choices, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and fast-start placement of the MP4 moov atom. Its upload recommendations also describe variable bitrate and a closed GOP. These apply to uploaded video files; they should not be copied blindly into live-encoder settings, where YouTube’s guidance specifies CBR. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Troubleshoot common batch and concat problems
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: the build may not include
libx264. Check the encoders available in that build or use a build that includes the requested encoder. - The loop reports errors for files that are not videos: the example scans every regular file in the input directory. Restrict the pattern to the intended media files or add a validation step.
- Some files fail because they have no audio: the example assumes an audio stream to encode. Inspect those sources and choose audio mapping and output behavior that fit whether audio is present.
- The concat demuxer rejects a clip or output timing is wrong: compare stream presence, codecs, time bases, resolution, frame rate, and audio layout. Normalize incompatible sources or switch to a concat-filter re-encode workflow; verify durations and playback at transitions.
- The live stream buffers or drops frames: check the chosen resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s recommended live bitrate, then confirm your upload capacity can sustain the feed. Review stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The live stream’s keyframes do not meet guidance: configure the live encoder for a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds, as YouTube recommends. This is a live-feed setting, not a reason to assume the batch MP4 command is configured correctly.
