Use the player’s SteamID64, not a display name, for a durable Rust server ban. From the in-game F1 console, RCON, or your host’s web console, run banid <SteamID64> "<reason>"; remove it with unban <SteamID64>. You need administrator rights, and command syntax can vary by Rust server build, so confirm the exact form with help before applying it to a live server.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you need before changing bans
Rust administrative commands are not available to ordinary players. The account issuing them must have an administrator authorization level above 0. Community command guides commonly describe moderator level 1 as sufficient for actions such as kicking, banning, muting and teleporting, while the owner level also permits convars and item spawning. Treat those permission details as version- and configuration-dependent and verify them on your server.

- A SteamID64: This is the stable identifier used by both ban and unban commands.
- Administrative access: Use an account that has been granted an owner or moderator authorization level.
- A command console: You can work in Rust’s in-game F1 console, a hosting panel’s web console, or RCON.
- A way to verify the result: The
banlistexcommand displays current bans, including names and reasons where those values were recorded. - A backup plan: Ban data is written to a server configuration file, but a crash before the server saves or shuts down cleanly can lose a recent change.
RCON is useful when you are not in the game. It lets an administrator issue console commands remotely and is commonly used to grant the first administrator account. A panel console is similar, but its login, command box and audit features depend on the host.
Ban a player by SteamID64
Use the stable identifier
A Steam display name is not a reliable identity. Players can change names, use the same name as someone else, or include characters that make a name-based command ambiguous. A SteamID64 remains the identifier the server uses for the ban record. If the player is offline, a SteamID ban is the method that can still target that account.

Run the command
- Open the F1 console, RCON session, or hosting-panel console with an administrator account.
- Enter the ban command with the player’s 17-digit SteamID64. The commonly documented form is
banid <SteamID64> "<reason>". For example:banid 76561198000000000 "Repeated rule violations". - Press Enter and watch the console response. If the server reports an unknown command, invalid argument or permission failure, stop and run
help banid(orhelp) to display the syntax accepted by that server. - Run
banlistexand check that the SteamID appears in the current list. The output may include the recorded name and reason. - Preserve the change by allowing the server to save normally. Keep a backup of the ban file in case the process crashes before the write completes.
Some community guides show an additional name argument, such as banid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>", while others show only the ID and reason. These forms are not interchangeable on every build. Do not blindly add a name field: use the syntax printed by your server’s own help command. The optional reason is useful for staff records, but the ID is the part that identifies the account.
Ban an online player by name
A name-based ban can work while the player is connected because the server can resolve the live connection to a SteamID. It is not a dependable offline method: the server does not maintain a permanent ban identity based on a display name. If the player has disconnected, obtain the SteamID64 and use banid instead. Even for an online player, an ID-based command is preferable because the display name can change during or after the incident.
Unban a player
Use the original SteamID64
Rust does not track banned users by username for the purpose of reversing a ban. An unban therefore requires the SteamID64 that appears in the ban record. The standard command is:
unban <SteamID64>
For example: unban 76561198000000000. Community instructions generally show the ID without quotation marks. Do not substitute the player’s current name, and do not copy a name from a ban-list display where the ID is not included.

Confirm the removal
- Open the same console channel used for the ban, with administrator rights.
- Run
unban <SteamID64>. - Run
banlistexand verify that the SteamID no longer appears as banned. - Ask the player to reconnect only after the console confirms the command. If the account still cannot join, check for another ban entry, a separate server, or a connection problem rather than repeatedly issuing the same command.
One hosting guide displays banid in an unban section; that conflicts with the normal unban syntax and should be treated as an error unless your server’s own help output explicitly says otherwise.
Restore administrator access when necessary
If the banned account was an owner or moderator, banning it strips that authorization immediately. Unbanning does not automatically restore the old permission. Re-add the appropriate level after the unban, then save the configuration:
ownerid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>"moderatorid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>"server.writecfg
A reconnect is often required before newly granted rights take effect. Check the result with the server’s permission behavior rather than assuming the command was applied.
Where each command can be run
| Console location | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| In-game F1 console | You are connected and already have admin rights. | You cannot use it if you cannot join the server or your account has no authorization. |
| RCON | You need remote administration without entering the game; it is also commonly used to grant the first admin. | RCON credentials, port and network access must already be configured. |
| Hosting-panel web console | Your server provider exposes a browser-based command console. | Interface labels, access controls and logging vary by provider. |
The command itself is server-side. Moving from F1 to RCON does not change the required SteamID or the need for authorization. Some guides prefix commands with global., for example global.banid; others omit that prefix. The shorthand commonly works the same, but your server’s help output is the authority for the build you are running.

Grant admin rights before banning
If no account can use the commands, grant an owner or moderator identity through RCON or the host console. The commonly documented forms are:
- Connect to RCON or the panel console using the server’s administrative credentials.
- Run
ownerid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>"for owner access, ormoderatorid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>"for moderator access. - Run
server.writecfgso the authorization is written to the server configuration. - Reconnect to the server, or have the account reconnect, because a permission change often does not become active in the existing session.
- Test a harmless administrative command or inspect the console response before attempting a ban.
Use the smallest authorization level that meets your staff policy. The community descriptions of moderator and owner capabilities are not an official permission matrix, so confirm the effective rights on your particular server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspecting and preserving the ban list
List current bans
Run banlistex to display banned users. Where available, the output includes the stored name and reason in addition to the SteamID. This makes it useful for confirming a newly added ban, locating the ID needed for an unban, and checking whether a supposedly removed entry remains.
Guides disagree about a command called bans versus banlistex. Because banlistex is the consistently documented form in the material available for this topic, try it first; if it is rejected, run help and use the ban-list command your server advertises.

Back up the file
Bans are also written to a file in the server’s configuration area. One commonly named location is bans.cfg under the server identity folder, but the exact path depends on how the server was installed and managed. Do not assume every host uses that folder or filename. Use the panel’s file manager, the server’s documented identity directory, or an administrator shell to locate the active configuration file.
- Make a copy before editing or migrating a server.
- After a significant ban change, verify that the file’s modification time or contents reflect the change.
- Do not edit the file while the server is actively rewriting it unless your host documentation says that is safe.
- Keep a dated backup so an accidental deletion or crash can be reversed.
A ban may be lost if the server crashes before a normal shutdown or save. A successful command response is not a substitute for confirming persistence after the server has written its configuration.

Common failures and their fixes
“Unknown command” or rejected syntax
Rust command syntax can differ between versions and between community guides. Try the command without a global. prefix, then check help for the exact spelling and argument order. Do not keep guessing by adding or removing quoted fields on a live server. In particular, banid is documented both as an ID-plus-reason form and as an ID-plus-name-plus-reason form.
“No permission” or no response
Confirm that the executing account has an authorization level above 0. If rights were just granted, reconnect. If you are attempting to grant the first admin, leave the game and use RCON or the panel console instead of F1. Check that you are connected to the intended server and not a different instance in the same panel.
Best Value
The name ban did not affect an offline player
Name resolution depends on the live connection. Obtain the account’s SteamID64 and issue an ID ban. If you cannot identify the ID from the current ban list or staff records, wait until the player is online and capture the identifier from the server’s player information before disconnecting them.
The unban command did not work
Recheck every digit of the SteamID64 and omit quotation marks around the ID. Run banlistex to see whether the entry is still present. If it disappeared but the player still cannot connect, investigate a second ban, a different server, or an unrelated connection restriction. If the person was staff, restore ownerid or moderatorid separately and run server.writecfg.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The ban disappeared after a restart or crash
Check whether the server shut down cleanly and whether the active ban file contains the entry. Restore the most recent verified backup if necessary, then issue the command again through the server console and allow a normal save. Because file locations vary, verify the identity folder used by that specific installation.
The player can return under another name
A display-name change does not evade a SteamID64 ban; that is precisely why the ID method is preferred. If a supposedly banned account returns, compare the connecting SteamID64 with the recorded entry. A different ID indicates a different account rather than a failed name match.
A disciplined moderation workflow
- Identify: Record the player’s SteamID64, current name, time and reason. Treat the name as context, not the identity key.
- Check policy: Confirm that the incident meets your server’s rules and that the administrator is authorized to act.
- Choose the channel: Use F1 for an active session, or RCON/panel console for remote or offline administration.
- Apply: Run the server-supported
banidsyntax and include a concise reason if the command accepts one. - Verify: Use
banlistexand record the resulting entry. - Persist: Allow a normal save, run
server.writecfgwhen changing authorization, and back up the relevant configuration data. - Reverse carefully: For an appeal or mistaken action, unban by SteamID64, verify the list, and restore staff rights separately when applicable.
This workflow separates identity, authority, command syntax and persistence. That prevents the most common administrative mistakes: banning a changeable name, trying to unban by name, issuing commands from an unauthorized console, or assuming a crash-safe save occurred.
Quick command reference
| Purpose | Command | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ban by SteamID64 | banid <SteamID64> "<reason>" |
Most guides agree on this form; some builds show an additional name field. Confirm with help. |
| Unban | unban <SteamID64> |
Use the ID, normally without quotes; usernames are not the unban key. |
| Show bans | banlistex |
Lists current bans and may show stored names and reasons. |
| Grant owner rights | ownerid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>" |
Reconnect may be required; save with server.writecfg. |
| Grant moderator rights | moderatorid <SteamID64> "<name>" "<reason>" |
Reconnect may be required; save with server.writecfg. |
| Save authorization changes | server.writecfg |
Use after changing owner or moderator entries. |
Use the reference as a starting point, not as a guarantee that every server accepts identical argument order. The server’s own help output takes precedence over a community summary.
