Choose the right action
V Rising separates removing someone from the current session from preventing a future connection. Decide what you need before typing a command:

| Remove a player right now | kick <character name | IP | user ID> |
Ends that player’s current session. | It is not a ban; the player can reconnect immediately. |
| Block one character | bancharacter <character name> |
Prevents the named character from connecting. | It is not documented as an account-wide Steam ban. |
| Block a Steam account | banuser <SteamID64> |
Bans the account identified by its 64-bit Steam ID, including when the player is offline according to one current guide. | You must supply the correct SteamID64; a character name is not accepted. |

Displays the ban list; a published guide reports that entries include index numbers. | It does not itself remove a ban. |
These commands are described in Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions for the 0.5.x era, with the 1.0.x documentation also listing the core ban, unban and kick commands. Exact behavior can change with the game build or a host’s server wrapper.
Prerequisites: enable and authenticate an administrator
Moderation commands are not available to an unauthenticated player. The documented sequence is:

- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Add your SteamID to the server’s administrator list. Do this in the server configuration or management panel used by your host. No universal file name or path is established for this administrator list, so follow the host’s current instructions for that setting.
- Connect a V Rising client to the world. A guide covering kicks, bans, teleports and item spawning says the client must be connected before those commands are usable.
- Open the server console and run
adminauth. Run it from the authenticated admin session, not as ordinary chat text. Wait for the console to acknowledge administrator access before issuing a moderation command. - Test the session with a harmless command. Running
helplets you see the commands exposed by your build. Keep the output available when checking disputed syntax such asunban.
If adminauth is rejected, stop there: a later kick or ban will not reliably work until the SteamID is on the admin list and the connected session has been authenticated. Recheck that you used the Steam account’s ID, restarted or reloaded the server if the host requires it, and authenticated in the correct server instance.
How to kick a player
Run the kick command
After adminauth, enter:
kick <character name | IP | user ID>
Replace the placeholder with the identifier your server accepts. The command syntax published for V Rising allows a character name, IP address or user ID. Use the least ambiguous value available: a unique user ID is preferable when several characters have similar names, while an exact character name is useful when you do not have the other identifiers.
What the player experiences
A kick removes the player from the current session. It is intentionally temporary: the player can reconnect as soon as they are able. Use it for a warning, a brief disruption, an accidental connection, or a situation that does not justify blocking the account.
If the player reconnects
Reconnection after a kick is expected behavior, not proof that the command failed. If the conduct continues, choose the narrower bancharacter action or the account-level banuser action, then confirm the result with banned.
How to ban one character
Use the character name
Run:
bancharacter <character name>
This blocks the specified character from connecting. Copy the name exactly as it appears in your player information or moderation interface. A character ban is a narrower response than an account ban; the command’s documented target is the character name, not a SteamID64.

When a character ban is appropriate
- Use it when you need to block a particular in-game identity but do not want to apply an account-wide sanction.
- Use it when the player’s Steam account identifier is unavailable and the exact character name is known.
- Do not assume it will cover every character owned by the same Steam account; the published syntax specifically targets one character.
Confirm the result
Run banned after the command and record the resulting entry. If the player is still connected, remove the current session with kick; a ban prevents a subsequent connection but does not replace the need to end an already active session on every build.

Use the SteamID64
For an account-level ban, enter:
banuser <SteamID64>
A SteamID64 is the account’s 64-bit Steam identifier, not the visible character name and not an IP address. One recent server guide states that banuser can be used whether the player is online or offline. That makes it the practical choice when an offending account has already disconnected.
Account ban versus character ban
| Consideration | bancharacter |
banuser |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier required | Character name | SteamID64 |
| Scope stated by the command | One character | The Steam account |
| Can target an offline player? | Not established by published guidance | One guide says yes |
| Best use | Narrow, character-specific moderation | Prevent the account from returning under that Steam identity |
An account ban is still tied to the identified Steam account. It should not be presented as a guaranteed solution for every possible alternate account or identity a person might use.
View the ban list with banned
Run:
banned
Published guidance says the response shows each ban and an index number. Write down the complete output before changing anything. The list is the safest way to determine whether a command succeeded, to identify the entry you intend to remove, and to learn which unban form your build appears to use.
Do not rely on the order from an old screenshot or a previous backup. If an index-based implementation is in use, adding or removing a ban can shift every later index.

How to unban a player when syntax differs
Published instructions disagree about the argument accepted by unban:
- Older guides show
unban <Steam64ID>. - A more recent guide says
unbantakes the index displayed bybanned, not a SteamID, and warns that indexes change whenever an entry is added or removed.
Because the disagreement may reflect different game versions or server wrappers, do not blindly paste a SteamID or index. Use this procedure:
- Run
bannedand save the current list, including indexes and identifiers. - Run
helpand inspect the command description if your build includes one. - Try the syntax indicated by your build’s help output. If help is silent, use the version-specific documentation supplied for your server build rather than assuming the older form.
- Run
bannedagain and verify that the intended entry disappeared, not a neighboring entry. - If the command reports an error, do not repeat it with guessed values. Use the file-based method below or contact the host with the exact console error and build number.
There is no single, version-independent unban argument established by published documentation. Treat a successful post-command banned check as essential.
Where banlist.txt is stored
V Rising stores bans in banlist.txt, with one SteamID per line. A console ban updates this file automatically. The directory is not identical on every host:
| Hosting layout reported | Path shown in the guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated-server file layout | VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ |
Look for banlist.txt inside the server’s Settings directory. |
| Control-panel layout | /settings/banlist.txt |
The panel exposes a settings directory directly. |
These are examples of host-specific layouts, not a universal Windows or Linux path. If you cannot find the file, use the panel’s file manager, check the server installation root, and search for the exact filename. Stop the server before manually editing a file if the host warns that live writes may be overwritten.

Manual removal as a fallback
One published guide suggests unbanning by removing the relevant line from banlist.txt. Before doing that:
- Make a dated backup of the original file.
- Confirm that the line belongs to the intended SteamID; do not delete by line number alone.
- Remove only that line and preserve the remaining one-ID-per-line format.
- Save the file, restart or reload the server as required by the host, and run
bannedto verify the change.
Manual editing is a recovery option, not a reason to ignore the console output. A server panel may regenerate the file, and an active server may overwrite an edit made while it is running.
Temporary bans: treat the commands as unverified
One game-server guide lists bancharactertemp and banusertemp and attributes them to a “1.1 October patch.” No current official release notes or command reference verify those commands against Stunlock documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not use either temporary-ban command in production merely because a guide lists it. First run help on your exact build. If the command is absent, use a normal ban and schedule a verified unban. If it appears, confirm the required argument and duration format in that build’s own help output; no duration syntax is established here.
RCON is not the same as the admin console
Official 1.0.x instructions show a small RCON command table containing help, announce, announcerestart and shutdown. That list does not establish kick, bancharacter, banuser or unban as RCON commands.
Best Value
For that reason, treat moderation commands as dedicated-server console commands used from an authenticated admin session. If your build’s help output explicitly exposes a moderation command through RCON, follow that build-specific behavior; otherwise connect an admin client, run adminauth, and use the server console.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Unknown command” or no response
- Run
helpand check spelling; V Rising command names are written as one word. - Confirm that you are in the V Rising server console, not ordinary player chat or a generic RCON prompt.
- Verify the server build. The official command material published for 0.5.x and 1.0.x is not a guarantee for every later build.
- Authenticate again with
adminauthafter reconnecting your client.
“Not an admin” or permission denied
Ensure the SteamID used in the administrator list belongs to the account currently connected. Then reconnect, run adminauth, and wait for confirmation. A server restart may be required after changing the administrator list.

The kick worked, but the player returned
This is normal for kick. Use bancharacter or banuser when the intended result is to block a future connection.
The ban appears ineffective
Run banned and compare the stored entry with the exact character name or SteamID64 you intended. A character ban and account ban target different identifiers. Also check that you changed the live server’s files, not a backup or a different instance.
The unban removed the wrong entry
Stop issuing commands, restore the backup if you edited the file, and rebuild the current list with banned. Indexes can shift after any add or removal, so never reuse an old index without checking the current output.
The file edit disappears
The server or panel may have rewritten banlist.txt. Stop the server before editing when supported, save the change in the panel’s designated settings area, then restart and verify with banned.
A reliable moderation workflow
- Identify the scope. Decide whether the incident needs a session removal, a character ban or an account ban.
- Authenticate. Confirm the administrator list, connect to the world and run
adminauth. - Record the identifier. Save the exact character name, IP, user ID or SteamID64 used for the action, along with the date and reason in your private moderation log.
- Apply the command. Use the smallest scope that achieves the safety objective.
- Verify. Run
bannedafter a ban or unban. For a kick, confirm the session ended. - Back up before manual changes. Preserve the original
banlist.txtbefore editing it. - Recheck after updates. A game or host update can alter command availability, argument rules or file locations.
This sequence separates identity errors from permission errors and leaves you with a recoverable record if an index-based unban behaves unexpectedly.

|---|---|---|---|
adminauth |
None shown | Authenticates the connected administrator session. | Use help or the console’s confirmation. |

banuser |
SteamID64 | Bans the Steam account; one guide reports offline use is supported. | Run banned. |
banned |
None shown | Lists current bans and, according to one guide, their indexes. | Use the output as the current source of truth. |
unban |
Build-dependent: SteamID64 or list index | Removes a ban when the argument matches your build’s syntax. | Run banned before and after. |
bancharactertemp, banusertemp |
Not established | Reported by one guide but not verified against official release documentation. | Use only if help on your build documents them. |
Version and evidence limits
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions labeled 0.5.x and 1.0.x cover this topic; no complete current official command reference has been published. Most additional syntax details come from server-host guides, whose publication dates and compatibility with the live build are not consistently visible. Therefore, the safest practice is to authenticate first, inspect help, verify every state change with banned, and keep a backup before touching banlist.txt.
