Google One isn’t just extra storage—it also includes an Android device backup feature that can help you recover contacts, call history, device settings, and certain app data when you switch phones or reset.
This guide shows you the exact paths to enable backup, how to verify it’s working, and the two main ways to restore: during new-phone setup or after you’ve already finished setup.

| Category | Usually included | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| App data | Data for compatible apps | Not every app backs up. Some games or niche apps may restore little or nothing. |
| Device settings | Wi‑Fi settings, some system settings | May not include carrier-specific or deeply custom settings. |
| Contacts | Contacts synced to Google | Most people recover contacts via Google account sync even without device backup. |
| Call history | Call history | Availability depends on what your device and carrier support. |
| SMS | Usually not fully covered | Some SMS-related backup behavior depends on Android setup and app permissions. |
| Photos and videos | Not typically via device backup | Use Google Photos for best results. |
If you need your personal media (photos/videos), you’ll usually want Google Photos or another media backup method in parallel. Think of Google One device backup as the phone settings + compatible app data lifeline, not a full media archive.
Prerequisites and What You Need Before You Start
Before you trigger a backup, confirm the basics—most restore failures come from account mismatch or backup never completing.
1) Same Google account across old and new devices
Use the same Google account for backup and for restore. During setup, Android will ask you to sign in; that account determines what backup it can find.
2) Sufficient storage in your Google One plan (or at least enough room)
Backups consume the storage attached to your Google account. If your Google account storage is full, backups may fail or never complete.
3) Stable Wi‑Fi and enough battery
Backups commonly run better on Wi‑Fi. Plug in your phone and keep the screen off when possible so the backup can finish.
4) Android version + device support
Google One’s “Device backups” availability can vary by device and Android build. If you don’t see the Google One device backup option, your phone may still support backup via Android’s built-in system settings.

Back Up Your Android Phone With Google One
You have two viable routes. Use the one that matches what your phone actually shows you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOption A: Use the Google One app (Device backups)
- Open the Google One app.
- Tap Device backups.
- If prompted, sign in with the same Google account you’ll use later for restore.
- Make sure Back up is turned on.
- Tap Back up now (or trigger a backup) and keep the phone on Wi‑Fi until it finishes.
When the backup runs, the status area should indicate it completed or show a timestamp. If you don’t see “Device backups,” your device likely relies on Android’s built-in backup switch instead (Option B).
Option B: Use Android’s built-in Backup setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google (or Google services).
- Tap Backup.
- Turn on Back up to Google One.
- Confirm the correct account is selected.
- Tap Back up now (if you see it), then wait for completion.
Even though this route doesn’t always say “Google One app,” it still backs up to your Google One storage. The restore process is the same—sign in on the new phone with the same account and choose the restore option.
Check Backup Status and Manage Storage
Don’t assume “it’s on” means “it worked.” Verify completion and ensure storage isn’t blocked.
Verify last backup time
In either Google One → Device backups or Settings → Google → Backup, look for a last backup timestamp or status such as “Backed up” / “In progress.” If you only see toggles with no confirmation, run a manual “Back up now” once and confirm the status changes.
Confirm you’re not out of storage
- Open Google One.
- Check your storage usage.
- If you’re near the limit, free up space or increase your plan, then run Back up now again.
Restore on the Same Phone vs. a New Phone
Restore behavior depends on whether your phone is brand new, factory reset, or just returning after a backup.

Restore during new-device setup (fastest path)
This is usually the most reliable method because Android can detect available backups while you’re still in setup mode.
- Turn on the new Android device and start setup.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi.
- When prompted, sign in using the same Google account used for backup.
- Choose the option like Copy your data or Restore from backup.
- Select the most recent backup option if you’re given choices.
- Finish setup and wait while the apps and settings apply.
If you skip signing into the correct account during setup, you may still reach the home screen—but the restore won’t find the right backup.
Restore manually after setup
If you’ve already completed setup (or the restore prompt didn’t appear), you can often trigger restore through backup settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google → Backup.
- Make sure Back up to Google One is enabled (this helps future backups).
- Sign in with the correct Google account if needed.
- Then check System settings for the specific restore/app restore prompt (wording varies by OEM).
In practice, the “manual restore” experience is more variable than restoring during setup. If you’re trying to recover immediately after a reset, you’ll often get the best results by starting setup again or waiting for Android’s app restore flow.
What to Expect During Restore (and what won’t come back)
Restoring is mostly about phone state—your exact layout, app list, and compatible app data. Media and some chat histories may depend on separate services.
- Apps: Many compatible apps will reinstall and may restore app-specific state. Some apps only restore after you open them once.
- Settings: Wi‑Fi settings and certain system options are typically restored. Manufacturer-specific customizations may not fully match your old phone.
- Photos/videos: Use Google Photos for best results. Device backup isn’t a substitute for media backup.
- Messaging: SMS behavior varies. If SMS is critical, check whether you used Google messages backup or a dedicated app.
Also note that restore can take time. If you have a lot of apps, first boot after a restore can feel slow while the system pulls data down in the background.

Troubleshooting When Backup or Restore Fails
If something goes wrong, don’t jump straight to re-enabling everything. Use the failure point to guide your fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Backup won’t start or keeps failing
- Check storage: Open Google One and make sure you’re not over quota.
- Confirm account: In Settings → Google → Backup, ensure the account matches the one you’ll restore with.
- Use Wi‑Fi: Try again on stable Wi‑Fi, ideally with battery charging.
- Restart the phone: Then tap Back up now again.
- Update Google Play services: Outdated services can block backup jobs.
If you see a specific error code, Google often ties it to storage or connectivity. Even without the code, storage + account mismatch are the two most common blockers.
Backup completes but restore can’t find data
- Sign in with the same Google account: During new-device setup, the account choice matters more than anything.
- Wait for restore processing: Some restorations apply after you reach the home screen.
- Try again after setup: Revisit Settings → Google → Backup and confirm the account is correct.
- Confirm the backup actually completed: If the “last backup” time didn’t update, the restore has nothing to restore.
Apps restore partially or data is missing
This usually isn’t a Google One failure. It’s app-level policy. Many apps don’t allow full backups, or they restore only once you sign back into the app.
- Open the app after restore and sign in if it requests credentials.
- If a critical app didn’t restore, check whether it has its own backup/export feature.
- For chat apps, use their built-in migration tools, not only device backup.
Stuck on setup prompts or wrong Google account
- If you realize you signed in with the wrong account during setup, you may need to restart setup to reliably restore.
- On the old phone, confirm which Google account is used for backup: Settings → Google → Backup.
- On the new phone, verify the same account is selected before you choose restore.
“Wrong account” is the single most common restore failure. Fixing it beats any amount of reboots or repeated backup toggling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common Mistakes That Break Restores
- Relying on an old backup: Always run Back up now shortly before switching devices.
- Changing accounts mid-process: Restore with the same account that created the backup.
- Assuming media is included: Photos/videos should be handled by Google Photos or your chosen media backup tool.
- Factory reset without a successful backup: If the backup never completed, restore will only reapply what’s actually stored.
- Turning off backup immediately after enabling it: Let it run to completion—some jobs don’t finish instantly.
Alternatives and Complements
Google One is great for device backup, but real-world migrations often benefit from combining it with other tools.
Manual backups for photos, media, and documents
If your phone contains irreplaceable photos or videos, use Google Photos. Enable sync, then confirm “Backup” completed in Photos before switching phones.
Best Value

- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
Full device image tools (when you need a true snapshot)
If you need a “restore back to exactly what it was” snapshot (including some system states), consider OEM tools or local backup methods. These are heavier than Google One backups but can be useful before major troubleshooting or when transferring to identical hardware.
For most everyday upgrades, though, Google One + Google Photos + app-specific migration tools cover the majority of needs.
FAQs
Does Google One backup SMS messages?
It depends. Google One device backup focuses on compatible app data and device settings. SMS backup behavior can vary by Android version and default messaging app. If SMS is critical, check your messaging app’s own backup options.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will Google One restore my apps and home screen layout?
Apps typically reinstall after restore, but home screen layout and certain app states aren’t guaranteed. App developers control what data can back up. Expect some differences, especially across different OEM skins.
What if I upgraded my Google One storage plan after the backup?
That can help future backups, but it won’t retroactively recover data that never successfully backed up. Run Back up now after changes and verify the “last backup” timestamp updates.
Can I restore to a different brand of Android phone?
Yes. Google One restore is account-based and generally works across devices, as long as you sign in with the same Google account and both devices support the backup/restore flow.
Do I need the Google One app to restore?
Usually not. Restore during setup happens through Android’s backup integration. The Google One app mainly provides backup controls and status (when available) and helps with storage management.
Bottom Line
To back up and restore an Android phone using Google One, focus on three things: enable device backup, confirm it actually completes, and restore using the exact same Google account. Do that, and most settings and compatible app data will return on your new device.
If photos/videos or messaging are critical, add Google Photos and app-specific migration/export tools—Google One device backup isn’t a full replacement for media or chat history.
