Then simulate trades using only information available at each point in time and compare the result with holding ADA over the same dates. A backtest describes how that rule would have behaved under stated assumptions; it does not predict future returns.
Define the Golden Cross rule you will test
ADA is Cardano’s native currency, and its market price is formed through supply and demand rather than set by a central authority. Cardano’s ADA documentation describes the currency; the Cardano overview provides network context.

“Golden Cross” is not a complete backtest specification. For a reproducible example, use this explicit rule:
- Market: ADA/USD spot candles from one named venue.
- Interval and averages: daily closes; 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages (SMA). The periods count candles, so a 50/200 weekly test is a different strategy from a 50/200 daily test.
- Entry: after a completed daily candle leaves the 50-day SMA above the 200-day SMA, having been at or below it on the prior completed candle, enter long on the next candle.
- Exit: after a completed daily candle leaves the 50-day SMA below the 200-day SMA, having been at or above it on the prior candle, exit on the next candle.
- Position and endpoint: specify whether the strategy can hold cash, whether it is spot-only, and whether any open position is closed at the final test date.
This 50/200 daily-SMA rule is an illustrative choice, not a universal definition. State the venue, exact pair, candle interval, price field, average type and lengths, execution timing, costs, dates, and benchmark alongside any result.

Choose and check historical ADA data
Use one venue and pair for the whole test, and preserve the quote currency and timestamps with the data. ADA/USD and ADA/USDT are not interchangeable: the quote asset, venue, liquidity, and available history may differ. Confirm the pair is available to you in your region before treating its candles as a plausible proxy for your execution.
Binance’s Spot API kline documentation is one concrete example of exchange candle data. It describes requests by symbol and interval, optional start and end times interpreted in UTC, and response fields including open time, OHLC prices, volume, and close time. The documented maximum response limit is 1,000 bars per request, so collecting a longer history requires paging through time ranges. API details can change; check the current documentation before building a collector.

A public Cardano trading-bot repository describes using TapTools data and logging backtest results to CSV; its sample configuration includes interval, maximum points, time bounds, and fee parameters. Treat this as an implementation example, not independent validation of the provider’s data quality, current coverage, price, or service terms. Review the repository and configuration before relying on it.

Keep the venue and pair attached to every exported chart or CSV: prices from different exchanges and quote pairs can diverge, and historical candles alone cannot establish the price available to a particular trader.

Run the simulation without lookahead
- Set the test window. Record its start and end dates, venue, pair, interval, timezone, and price field. Load at least 200 completed candles before the first scored date so both averages are fully formed; do not score an incomplete initial 200-bar window.
- Calculate each day’s averages from completed closes. Mark a crossover only after the candle containing the confirming close has finished.
- Place the modeled trade on the next candle. A signal based on a closing price cannot honestly assume a fill at that same close without a separate, justified execution model. TradingView’s strategy documentation on lookahead bias explains how future information leaking into historical evaluation can make results unrealistic.
- Apply costs on both sides. Include entry and exit fees and state the slippage assumption. Fees and execution costs depend on venue, market, order type, and account tier; the sources do not establish one universally correct rate. Show the actual assumptions rather than presenting net performance as cost-free.
- Record the final position treatment. State whether an open position is marked to market or closed at the end, and apply the same policy consistently when reporting results.
Report results against a fair benchmark
Compare the strategy with buying and holding ADA over the same dates, using the same underlying market data and a clearly stated treatment of costs. Include more than total return:
- Total return for the tested window.
- Maximum drawdown, so the scale of the largest peak-to-trough decline is visible.
- Number of completed trades.
- Time invested versus time in cash.
- Data window, venue, pair, interval, signal and fill rules, fees, and slippage assumptions.
Stratsemble reports a hypothetical Cardano moving-average-crossover simulation for 2021-09-23 through 2026-09-21 using 1,825 bars: -58.2% strategy total return, -89.5% buy-and-hold return, -72.9% maximum drawdown, and four trades. These are that publisher’s outputs for its generic crossover setup and its stated window—not a reproduced result for the 50/200 daily-SMA rule above, or a verified universal Golden Cross statistic. Test whether the result is fragile
Do not search many parameter combinations and publish only the best-looking one as though it had been chosen in advance. Instead, define the rule first and check whether its conclusion survives reasonable changes:
- Reserve a later period that was not used to choose the parameters, or use rolling/walk-forward evaluation.
- Check sensitivity to the test start date and to plausible fee and slippage assumptions.
- If comparing daily and weekly intervals or different venues, align the dates and benchmark before comparing returns; otherwise the results are not an apples-to-apples test.
What a Cardano Golden Cross backtest can—and cannot—tell you
The test answers a narrow question: how would this explicitly defined rule have performed on this chosen historical data under these modeled costs and fills? It does not establish that the strategy will make money in the future. A crossover is lagging by construction because it waits for averages of past prices to cross; entries and exits can therefore follow substantial market moves. Crypto price history also spans different market regimes, and a full-period result may be dominated by a small number of large moves.
