Bitcoin and Ethereum are separate blockchain networks with different primary purposes. Bitcoin is designed mainly for peer-to-peer digital currency; Ethereum is a programmable network for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Their native assets—bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH)—are therefore not interchangeable, and differences in their technology do not predict which asset will perform better as an investment.
Bitcoin and Ethereum are built for different uses
Bitcoin: peer-to-peer digital currency
Bitcoin’s original design describes a system for peer-to-peer electronic cash, allowing value to move without relying on a central intermediary. Its network uses a public blockchain to record transactions. Bitcoin’s original design paper sets out that payment-focused purpose.

Ethereum: a programmable blockchain
Ethereum also records transactions on a public blockchain, but its core purpose extends beyond payments. It supports smart contracts—programs that execute on the network—and decentralized applications built with them. Ethereum.org describes this as a platform for apps and digital economies. The practical distinction is one of emphasis: Ethereum is designed around programmable applications, while Bitcoin has a narrower payment-focused design. That does not mean Bitcoin has no programmability at all.

BTC is Bitcoin’s native asset; ETH, also called ether, is Ethereum’s native asset. A transaction or application on one network does not automatically operate on the other.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How their networks reach agreement
| Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|
| Uses proof-of-work. Miners expend computation and energy to compete to add blocks. | Uses proof-of-stake. Validators stake ETH and participate in proposing or attesting to blocks. |
Ethereum moved from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in September 2022. Ethereum.org estimates that the change reduced the network’s energy expenditure by approximately 99.98%; this is the organization’s estimate, not an independent audit. Ethereum.org also notes that proof-of-stake is less time-proven than proof-of-work. Neither the energy figure nor the consensus design alone establishes that one network is categorically more secure or better.
Running a solo Ethereum validator requires a 32 ETH deposit; pools provide ways to participate without holding that amount individually. Staking introduces its own risks and is not necessary simply to buy or hold ETH. Details are available in Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake documentation.

Supply rules differ
Bitcoin has a protocol-enforced limit
Bitcoin’s issuance follows a predetermined schedule, with a limit of 21 million BTC. Bitcoin Core documentation explains that full validation rejects blocks that violate this limit. It is a protocol rule, not a guarantee of future price appreciation.

ETH supply changes over time. Issuance adds ETH as validator rewards, while a portion of transaction fees is burned. The balance depends on network activity and staking, so ETH is not permanently inflationary or permanently deflationary. Ethereum.org explains these supply mechanics in its Bitcoin and Ethereum comparison.

Fees and transaction timing are not fixed comparisons
Ethereum transactions use gas, priced through a dynamic fee market that responds to demand. Proof-of-stake does not directly set the transaction fee. When network demand rises, fees can change; a network’s consensus mechanism is not a live fee quote.
Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin blocks as averaging about 10 minutes apart. Additional confirmations make reversing a transaction progressively harder, increasing confidence as they accumulate. The average is not a promise that a particular transaction will settle in 10 minutes, and it says nothing by itself about the fee you will pay. See the Ethereum proof-of-stake FAQ and Bitcoin FAQ for these network mechanics.

Actual fees and timing vary with conditions. Without current, comparable data, it is not accurate to say one network is always cheaper or faster than the other.

Self-custody
With self-custody, you control the wallet keys and are responsible for protecting them and any recovery information. Losing access or exposing credentials can put funds at risk. Bitcoin.org explains the responsibility involved in holding bitcoin yourself. For ETH, check that the wallet and any service you use explicitly support the asset and relevant network.

Custody through a provider
A custodial service holds assets or access on your behalf. This avoids some of the direct key-management burden, but makes you dependent on the provider’s security and solvency. Neither custody approach removes market volatility, phishing, operational mistakes, or the possibility of loss. Bitcoin.org discusses these trade-offs in its FAQ.
What the differences do—and do not—tell a first-time buyer
The network features help explain what BTC and ETH are used for, how transactions are validated, and how supply and fees work. They do not forecast either asset’s market price or investment outcome. A 21 million BTC limit, Ethereum’s fee-burning mechanism, or a consensus design is not evidence that an asset will rise in value.
- If you are examining peer-to-peer digital value transfer, Bitcoin’s payment-focused design is the relevant starting point.
- If you are examining programmable applications and the network that runs them, Ethereum’s smart-contract ecosystem is the relevant starting point.
- If you are deciding how to hold either asset, weigh the responsibility of managing access yourself against reliance on a custodian.
These distinctions explain the networks; they do not amount to an investment recommendation.
