Xbox game installations and game saves are backed up in different ways. To carry supported game progress to another Xbox, connect the old console to the internet and let the game sync with the Xbox network; then sign in to the new console with the same Microsoft account and let the save sync there. Use an external drive or expansion card to move or keep installed game files—not as a USB export of save data.
What an Xbox backup includes
An installed game is the software stored on a console or storage device. A save is your game progress. Moving or keeping an installation can save download time or free console space, but it does not replace syncing progress to the Xbox network.

- Game progress: Xbox network Connected Storage supports per-user progress roaming for supported games. Whether and how a game uses cloud storage depends on its implementation; do not assume every game or an offline session has a current cloud copy. Microsoft’s Connected Storage documentation describes the service for developers.
- Installed games: Compatible storage can help move or retain game installations. Xbox support documents multi-game transfer and Series X|S expansion card use, but an external drive is not a save-file backup. Xbox’s transfer guidance and its Series X|S expansion card guidance cover those storage uses.
How to sync saves before switching consoles
If the old console is available, connect it to the network before you switch. Xbox says saves are automatically backed up to the Xbox network, while Microsoft’s Connected Storage documentation describes cloud storage that roams across supported devices. An offline play session may not have uploaded its latest progress.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the old Xbox to the internet and sign in to the Microsoft account used for the game.
- Open the game and allow any save synchronization to complete. Avoid turning off the console or interrupting the connection while it is syncing.
- On the replacement Xbox, sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- Install or launch the game and wait for its cloud save to synchronize before continuing. Some games may also require a separate publisher account or cross-progression setup.
This process applies to supported games and their cloud-save implementations; it is not a guarantee that every offline or unsynchronized save can be recovered.

How to get your games onto the new Xbox
You may reinstall compatible owned digital games or move installations using supported storage. The practical choice depends on your internet connection, time, and available drive space; the available evidence does not establish exact transfer speeds or drive specifications.
| Option | Useful when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Re-download | You have reliable internet and enough bandwidth and time. | Sign in with the account that owns the compatible digital title and look in Ready to Install. Availability can vary by game and catalogue status. |
| Console-to-console transfer | Both consoles are available and you want to transfer multiple installations. | Xbox documents transferring multiple games on Xbox One. This moves game files, not a substitute for save synchronization. See Xbox’s transfer guidance. |
| External storage or expansion card | You want to retain or move installations and have compatible storage available. | Xbox documents Series X|S expansion card support. Check the current console-specific guidance for compatibility and whether a title can run from a particular drive; an external drive does not export Xbox saves. See Xbox’s expansion card guidance. |
Owned compatible digital titles can appear under Ready to Install when you use the account associated with the purchase. A game available through a subscription catalogue is an entitlement, not necessarily a purchase; catalogue availability can change. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules describe account and device licensing.

Can you back up Xbox saves to a USB drive?
The documented consumer-facing route for supported Xbox game progress is Xbox network synchronization, not copying saves to a USB drive. Microsoft’s developer documentation distinguishes local console storage from Connected Storage, and does not establish a general USB save-export process for players. Treat a storage drive as a way to move or keep game installations, not as a second copy of your save.
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 19, 2026, Xbox said saves are automatically backed up to the Xbox network and announced local save management as an Xbox Insider feature. That announcement does not establish that the new local-save settings were available to every Xbox owner; see Xbox Wire’s announcement.

If a save does not appear on the new console
- Check that you are signed in to the same Microsoft account used to play the game.
- Confirm the console is connected to the network, then open the game and allow synchronization time to finish.
- Check whether the game uses a separate publisher account or requires its own cross-progression setup.
- If the old console is still available, reconnect it and give the game a chance to sync before relying on the new console.
These checks address account and synchronization issues; they do not guarantee restoration of a deleted save or an older cloud version.
