You can spot-check a fitness tracker by comparing one metric with a suitable independent reference over the same activity and time window. That can show whether the readings agree in that situation; it cannot prove that every feature is accurate or clinically validated. Steps, heart rate, sleep, and calorie estimates have different strengths and limitations.
What a useful accuracy check can—and cannot—tell you
A tracker reading is an index measurement: the device is estimating something about your activity or body. To check it, compare it with a criterion measure suited to that metric, collected at the same time. Keep the activity and comparison window consistent, and repeat the check in more than one condition that reflects how you use the tracker.

One matching daily total or a strong correlation does not show that two devices agree at the moments that matter. Look at the direction and size of differences across repeated checks. A steady walk may not reveal errors during a fast pace change, for example, and a laboratory result does not automatically transfer to everyday use.

A home comparison is an informal spot check, not a clinical validation. It can help you understand a device’s behavior in a particular context, but it cannot establish a universal accuracy rating or show that either device is ground truth.

How to check step counts
- Choose a flat, safe route with a known distance, or decide on a fixed-duration walk.
- Wear the tracker as its maker instructs. During the walk, count each step yourself; a tally counter can help, but it is optional.
- At the end of the same interval, compare your manual count with the tracker’s step count.
- Repeat at another pace or in another walking context that matters to you. Keep the route or duration, device placement, and comparison window as consistent as possible.
Record both counts and whether the tracker was higher or lower. A manual count is a practical comparison, not a validated guarantee: counting can also be imperfect. Still, steps have generally been better supported in reviews than consumer sleep or energy-expenditure estimates.
How to check heart-rate readings
Compare readings at rest and during steady exercise, using a reference that is suitably independent and recording both over the same period. In formal validation studies, researchers use electrocardiography (ECG) as a criterion measure. A consumer comparing a tracker with another known reliable device can learn whether those two devices agree, but that comparison does not make either one a clinical standard.

- 3D TRI-AXIS STEP TRACKING ACCURATE FROM DIFFERENT POSITIONS: Built-in 3D tri-axis sensor detects movement from multiple directions, allowing the pedometer to track steps while worn or carried in different positions, such as on your waist, clothing, bag or backpack.
- SMART 10-STEP COUNTING HELPS REDUCE FALSE COUNTS: The pedometer begins recording after 10 consecutive steps to help filter out accidental shaking and short movements. Once continuous walking is detected, the initial steps are automatically added to the total.
- MULTIFUNCTION ACTIVITY TRACKER TRACK MORE THAN STEPS: Monitor up to 99,999 steps along with walking distance, calories burned and estimated fat burned. Adjustable stride length and body weight settings provide activity estimates based on your personal information.
- 30-DAY ACTIVITY MEMORY REVIEW YOUR DAILY PROGRESS: Stores up to 30 days of step, distance, calorie and fat-burn data, allowing you to compare previous activity records directly on the device without Bluetooth, an app or a smartphone.
- BACKLIT DISPLAY AND LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN EASY TO READ AND CARRY: The clear LCD screen features a backlight and 24-hour clock for convenient viewing. Weighing approximately 29.5 g, the compact step counter includes a hook-and-loop carrying strap and one replaceable CR2032 battery.
Include a condition with changing effort if that reflects your use. Wrist-based photoplethysmography (PPG) devices can be less reliable during transient states, such as when motion begins or heart rate changes substantially. A 2025 study compared five commercial wrist-worn devices with 12-lead ECG during a 20-minute protocol of rest and varied-intensity walking; it reported reduced wrist-device performance during transitions. The result applies to the selected devices, participants, and protocol, not to every tracker. [Sensors study (2025)]

Longer averaging windows can smooth readings and hide short-term variation. When comparing devices, use similar time windows and note whether each reports an instantaneous value or an average.

Why sleep and calorie estimates are harder to verify at home
There is no simple home comparison established here that verifies sleep stages or calorie burn. These estimates depend on more than a countable event, and the available reviews found weaker validity for sleep and energy expenditure than for steps.
An older review of Fitbit and Jawbone devices found that, in the studied models and settings, total sleep time and sleep efficiency tended to be overestimated and wake after sleep onset underestimated compared with polysomnography. These findings describe older devices, not all current trackers. Treat sleep and calorie outputs as estimates and trends rather than precise measurements. [Evenson, Goto, and Furberg review (2015)]

How to judge accuracy claims in studies
When evaluating a published validation claim, check what was measured, against what reference, and under which conditions. The INTERLIVE expert statement sets out six domains for validating consumer PPG heart-rate devices:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Target population
- Criterion measure
- Index measure
- Testing conditions
- Data processing

This is a framework for assessing studies, not evidence of one universal certification test that every manufacturer follows. A claim based on steady exercise in a lab should not be treated as proof of accuracy during daily life or rapid changes in effort. [INTERLIVE expert statement]

Systematic reviews also need a date and scope attached to their findings. A 2020 review examined 158 publications covering nine commercial wearable brands, with studies searched only through May 2019. In that historical evidence, Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Samsung appeared to measure steps accurately in laboratory settings; heart-rate performance varied, with Apple Watch and Garmin strongest in the reviewed evidence and Fitbit tending to underestimate. No brand accurately measured energy expenditure in that evidence base. This is not a current ranking of products. [Fuller et al. review (2020)]
