Use Save while the server is running, or Shutdown for a clean stop, then archive the complete U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory. A usable backup also contains your configuration, Workshop manifest, permissions, and plugin or module files. Keep dated copies outside the live installation and verify at least one restore on a disposable server ID.

What an Unturned server backup must contain
An Unturned dedicated server does not create an automatic save point. The official server documentation states that you must run Save while the server remains online or run Shutdown to save safely and close it. Copying files without first creating a clean save can leave the archive behind the players’ latest actions or capture files while they are being written.

Each server ID has its own world data and settings. Backing up only a map-level file is therefore incomplete. The archive should preserve the files that make the world reproducible, not merely the terrain data.

| Backup item | Why it matters | Typical location |
|---|---|---|
| World and player save data | Preserves the map state, structures, inventories, player progress, and other persistent gameplay data. | Inside U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>, including the server’s level/save directories. |
Commands.dat |
Retains server commands and command-related settings that affect administration and gameplay. | The server’s configuration area under the ServerID directory. |
Config.txt or the applicable difficulty configuration |
Restores settings such as the selected difficulty and other server behavior. | The ServerID configuration area. |
WorkshopDownloadConfig.json |
Records Workshop IDs so the server can obtain the maps, assets, or content it expects at startup. | The server’s configuration area. |
| Administrator and permission files | Brings back operator access, groups, and permission assignments. | Where your installation stores its admin and permission data. |
| Plugin and module directories | Recreates extensions and their settings when you use a plugin framework such as Rocket/LDM. | The relevant plugin and module folders in or alongside the server installation. |
Workshop content and plugins are dependencies, not optional decorations. Unturned updates Workshop files and dependencies at startup, while the manifest identifies the IDs it should download. If those files are absent, a restored world may start with missing assets, disabled features, or a different map.

Confirm the supported operating system
The dedicated-server documentation supports hosting on Windows and Linux. It does not support macOS hosting in the cited documentation. The backup procedure is the same in principle on the supported systems, but paths, permissions, and file-copy tools differ.

Find the installation and ServerID
A SteamCMD installation normally places the server under steamapps/common/U3DS. Launch scripts commonly use +InternetServer/<ServerID> for an internet server or +LanServer/<ServerID> for a LAN server. Those arguments determine which directory appears under U3DS/Servers.
Do not guess the ID from a server name shown in a launcher. Open the installation directory and identify the exact folder beneath U3DS/Servers. If you operate several instances, record each ID separately; restoring one instance into another ID can make a healthy backup appear to be missing.

Choose a destination that is not the live server disk
An archive in the same directory as the live installation does not protect you from accidental deletion, disk failure, ransomware, or a bad update. Use a separate local disk, another machine, or managed storage, and keep at least one copy physically or logically separate from the host. That separation is operational guidance rather than a retention rule published by Unturned.
Create a consistent save point
Option 1: save without stopping
- Notify players that you are creating a backup and ask them to stop making changes for the short save window.
- Send the server the
Savecommand using the administration method you normally use. - Wait for the command to complete, then copy the ServerID directory to the archive destination.
- Keep the server online only if you understand that new activity after the save will not be represented in that snapshot.
This approach minimizes downtime, but the archive represents the moment of the save, not every action that occurs while files are being copied.
Option 2: shut down cleanly
- Warn connected players and allow them to leave normally.
- Run the
Shutdowncommand. - Wait until the process has exited and no server process is still writing inside the ServerID directory.
- Copy the complete directory, including hidden files and subdirectories.
- Start the server again with the same
+InternetServer/<ServerID>or+LanServer/<ServerID>argument.
A clean shutdown is the safest choice before a full manual copy because it removes the risk of capturing a partially written save.
Manual backup on Windows
Using File Explorer
- Open the SteamCMD installation and browse to
steamappscommonU3DSServers. - Right-click the exact
<ServerID>folder and choose Copy. - Create a destination folder with the date and time, for example
UnturnedBackupsMyServer2026-10-15_2300. - Paste the folder there. The resulting path should contain the ServerID directory itself, not just its contents, so that the archive can be placed back under
U3DSServersduring recovery. - Open the archive and verify that the save directories, configuration files, Workshop manifest, and administrative data are present.
Using Robocopy
Robocopy is useful for repeatable copies and can report failures that a drag-and-drop operation may hide. Run it only after the save or clean shutdown described above:

robocopy $source $destination /E /COPY:DAT /R:2 /W:5 /XJ
if ($LASTEXITCODE -ge 8) { throw "Robocopy reported a failure" }
Replace both paths with your actual installation and backup volume. The /E switch includes subdirectories, including empty ones; /COPY:DAT preserves data, attributes, and timestamps; and the exit-code check turns a failed copy into an actionable error instead of a silent success.
Manual backup on Linux
Copying the directory with rsync
After running Save or stopping the server cleanly, copy the directory to a dated destination:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →SOURCE="/home/steam/steamapps/common/U3DS/Servers/MyServer"
DEST="/srv/unturned-backups/MyServer/$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S)"
mkdir -p "$DEST"
rsync -a -- "$SOURCE/" "$DEST/"
test -f "$DEST/WorkshopDownloadConfig.json" || echo "Check the manifest path"
The trailing slash on the source copies the ServerID directory’s contents into the dated folder. If you want the archive to contain the ServerID folder as its top-level item, set the destination one level higher and copy the directory without the trailing slash:
mkdir -p /srv/unturned-backups/MyServer
rsync -a -- "$SOURCE" "/srv/unturned-backups/MyServer/$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S)/"
Use one layout consistently so your restore procedure always knows where the archived ServerID directory is located. Check ownership and permissions before restarting the service; a backup restored as the wrong user can be readable but unwritable by the account that runs the server.

Automate recurring backups without losing consistency
Separate the save action from the file copy
A scheduled copy cannot make an online world consistent by itself. Build the workflow in this order:
- Schedule a maintenance window appropriate to how quickly your world changes.
- Send
Save, or stop the server and useShutdownfor a fully quiescent snapshot. - Copy the entire ServerID directory to a new, dated destination.
- Check the copy’s exit status and confirm that expected files exist.
- Move older snapshots to a separate storage target or delete them according to your retention policy.
If your control panel or service manager can stop and start the server, place the copy between those operations. If it cannot send the in-game command, schedule a clean stop instead of copying a live directory and assuming the result is safe.
Retention that matches the world’s change rate
There is no official Unturned retention schedule. A practical policy keeps more recent snapshots for a frequently changing public world and fewer snapshots for an occasional private server. At minimum, retain enough history to go back before a corruption event, not just the most recent copy. Keep one snapshot on separate storage so a failure affecting the host does not erase every generation.
Make archives identifiable
Use names that include the ServerID and a sortable timestamp, such as MyServer-2026-10-15_2300. Record whether each archive was made after Save or after Shutdown. That note tells you how much activity might be missing if you need to choose between two close snapshots.

Workshop maps, assets, and plugin dependencies
Workshop content
Open WorkshopDownloadConfig.json in the archive and confirm that the expected Workshop IDs are present. The manifest is the reproducibility record; without it, a restored server may not know which content to download. Startup can update Workshop files and dependencies, so allow the server to complete that process before judging the restored world.

Do not remove an ID merely because the first launch is slow; a large collection may need time to update.
Rocket/LDM and other modules
When Rocket/LDM is installed, preserve the module and plugin setup as well as the world. The documentation describes copying the Rocket.Unturned module from Extras to Modules. A world-only restore can therefore boot without the extension layer, causing commands, permissions, or gameplay features supplied by plugins to disappear.
Archive plugin configuration files and any custom modules together with the ServerID backup, and restore them to the same relative paths before starting the server. Match the plugin files to the server build you are restoring; loading a different module set can create errors even when the save itself is intact.

Prepare a reversible recovery
- Stop the live server and ensure the process has exited.
- Make one last copy of the current ServerID directory, even if you believe it is corrupt. This preserves evidence and gives you a way back.
- Rename the live directory, for example to
MyServer-before-restore, instead of deleting it. - Choose an archive created after a known-good save or shutdown.
Put the archive back in the authoritative path
- Copy the archived
<ServerID>directory intoU3DS/Servers/. - Confirm that the resulting path is exactly
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>, with no extra nested folder such as.../<ServerID>/<ServerID>. - Restore the matching configuration, permissions, Workshop manifest, plugin directories, and modules to their original relative locations.
- On Linux, set ownership and permissions to the account that normally runs the server.
- Start with the same launch mode and ID, using
+InternetServer/<ServerID>or+LanServer/<ServerID>.
Validate before inviting players
- Join as an administrator and confirm the expected map loads.
- Inspect several known structures and storage containers.
- Check a test account’s inventory and location.
- Verify administrator and permission behavior.
- Confirm that Workshop maps and assets load without download errors.
- Check that required plugins and commands are active.
Whenever possible, perform the first restore on a disposable ServerID. This lets you validate the archive without overwriting the production instance or confusing a test world with the live one.
Troubleshoot a restore that does not look right
The server starts in a new world
- Check that you restored the correct ServerID and launched with the same ID.
- Look for an extra directory level created during extraction or copying.
- Confirm that the archive includes the save directories, not only
Commands.datandConfig.txt. - Consider whether the desired changes occurred after the archive’s
Savepoint.
The map or Workshop assets are missing
- Open
WorkshopDownloadConfig.jsonand verify the required IDs. - Allow startup updates to finish and inspect the server log for dependency failures.
- Check network access to Workshop and available disk space.
- Compare the restored manifest with the archive you selected; an older snapshot may intentionally contain a different map set.
Plugins, commands, or permissions disappeared
- Restore the plugin and module directories, not just the world save.
- Verify that the
Rocket.Unturnedmodule is in the expectedModuleslocation when Rocket/LDM is used. - Check administrator and permission files for the same relative paths and correct ownership.
- Read startup errors for a module version mismatch before copying additional files over the restored save.
The copy itself is incomplete
- Review Robocopy or
rsyncoutput for permission, path, or disk-space errors. - Compare the archive’s file count and size with a known-good generation; size alone is not proof, but a dramatic drop is a warning.
- Repeat the operation after a clean
Shutdownif the first archive was made while the server was active.
Choose a backup method
| Method | Save consistency | Coverage | Retention and off-host copy | Administrative effort | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual copy | Depends on the operator using Save or Shutdown correctly. |
Can cover the complete ServerID directory if you copy it deliberately. | Must be organized by hand; off-host copies require another manual step. | Low setup, high risk of being forgotten. | Small private servers or occasional maintenance. |
| Scheduled script | Reliable only when the schedule includes a proper save or clean stop before copying. | Repeatable copies can include world, configuration, Workshop, permissions, and plugins. | Can create dated generations and replicate them to separate storage. | Moderate setup; requires monitoring exit codes, disk space, and permissions. | Active communities that need predictable recovery points. |
| Managed hosting backup | Depends on the provider’s save coordination and documented restore process. | Ask whether it captures the complete ServerID directory and plugin dependencies, not only the level file. | Confirm retention, separate storage, and whether you can download an independent copy. | Lower server maintenance, but you must verify the service’s controls. | Owners who prefer delegated operations and a documented restore workflow. |
Whichever method you choose, the decisive tests are the same: does it capture the complete ServerID directory, preserve Workshop and plugin dependencies, create a consistent save point, keep history away from the live disk, and produce a restore you have actually tested?
A practical backup checklist
- Identify the exact installation and
ServerID. - Use
Save, or useShutdownand wait for the process to exit. - Copy
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>, not just a single level file. - Check for
Commands.dat,Config.txtor difficulty settings, andWorkshopDownloadConfig.json. - Include admin, permission, plugin, and module directories.
- Name the archive with the server ID and timestamp.
- Store at least one generation outside the live installation.
- Inspect copy-tool errors and available storage.
- Restore to a disposable ServerID and verify map, structures, inventories, permissions, Workshop content, and plugins.
- Document the exact launch argument and archive location for the person responsible for recovery.
Bottom line
A dependable Unturned backup is a clean save plus the complete U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory and its dependencies. Save or shut down before copying, preserve configuration and Workshop/plugin files, keep dated generations on separate storage, and prove the procedure with a test restore before an emergency makes the decision for you.
