Back up your Mac before installing macOS. For most people, Apple’s built-in Time Machine and an external drive are the simplest option: set up the drive, let the first backup finish, and then install the update through Software Update. Apple itself recommends backing up before installing new software.
Choose a backup method
The options below do not protect the same things. Time Machine creates a broader backup that can help you recover files; iCloud syncs selected data, while copying files manually protects only the items you choose.

| Method | What it covers | Where it goes | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time Machine | Files such as documents, photos, music, email, and apps. It does not back up system files or apps installed during macOS installation. | Usually an external drive; supported network destinations are also available. | Can run automatic incremental backups. A Time Machine backup is not necessarily a bootable clone or a guaranteed one-click rollback of an update. |
| iCloud | Selected synced data, such as photos, contacts, calendars, notes, passwords, and iCloud Drive files. | iCloud | Apple says iCloud does not back up your entire Mac. Storage availability and limits affect what you can keep there. |
| Manual file copy | Only the files you select, such as important documents, photos, and videos. | An external storage device or another location you choose. | Useful as a fallback, but it is not a complete system backup and does not automatically keep a changing file history. |
Apple describes an external storage device as the most common Time Machine destination. A Mac shared as a network destination and a NAS device that supports Time Machine over SMB are other possibilities. For network storage, check Apple’s current compatibility guidance and the device maker’s setup instructions. Apple says AFP-based NAS backup or transfer is not supported in macOS 27 or later.

Set up Time Machine with an external drive
These menu steps apply to macOS Ventura 13 or later; earlier macOS versions may use different settings and labels. Use a drive compatible with your Mac’s available port, such as USB-C or Thunderbolt.
- Connect the drive. If it contains files you need, do not approve an erase prompt. Erasing removes data; use an empty drive or choose another destination instead.
- Choose a suitable capacity. Apple recommends a Time Machine disk ideally at least twice the capacity of your Mac’s storage. This is guidance, not a guarantee that every drive will suit every backup history.
- Open Time Machine settings. Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Time Machine, then choose Add Backup Disk or the add button. Select the drive and choose Set Up Disk.
- Choose whether to encrypt. If you enable encryption, create a password and store it securely. You will need that password to restore files from the encrypted backup.
- Wait for the first backup to finish. The initial backup can take longer than expected. You can use the Mac while it runs, but wait until it completes before starting the macOS update. Later backups copy changed files and are generally faster.
Apple’s instructions for setting up Time Machine cover the disk, encryption, and backup process. Before disconnecting the drive, eject it or shut down your Mac.

Can you use iCloud or copy files instead?
Yes, either can preserve selected files, but neither should be mistaken for a full Time Machine backup. iCloud keeps chosen categories and iCloud Drive content synced; a manual copy includes only the files you copy. Apple’s guidance is explicit: iCloud doesn’t back up your entire Mac.

Install the macOS update after backing up
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Wait while Software Update checks for software compatible with your Mac model.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen update, upgrade, or restart prompts. Enter an administrator password if asked.
- Keep the Mac awake and do not close its lid while installation is in progress. Restarts, progress bars, or blank screens may occur.
If Software Update shows no update, Apple says your Mac may already be up to date or may not be compatible with that release. Available updates vary by Mac model and change over time, so use Software Update and Apple’s current compatibility information rather than relying on a universal “latest macOS” version. Apple’s macOS update instructions explain the update workflow.

Time Machine backs up files and can help recover them, but it does not back up system files or apps installed during macOS installation. Do not assume that a Time Machine backup is a bootable copy of your Mac or guarantees a one-step return to the exact prior macOS installation. For details, see Apple’s guide to backing up files with Time Machine.
