Before installing an Android system update, run a fresh Google Account backup, confirm the selected categories show as saved, and check Google Photos and important files separately. Google says a device backup can take up to 24 hours, so start early and verify completion rather than assuming that tapping “Back up now” finishes immediately.
What an Android backup does—and does not—cover
Google’s backup and restore guidance describes general device backup, not a special backup mode for system updates. It does not say that a routine Android update will erase your personal data, and a backup is not a guarantee that every item can be recovered after an update problem.

A Google Account device backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages. Coverage varies: Google warns that not all apps back up or restore all their settings and data. Some items may also be restorable only during device setup, rather than as individual files later. - Open Backup settings. On many phones, go to Settings → Google → All services → Backup and restore → Backup. Labels can vary by Android version and manufacturer; if you do not see that path, search Settings for “Backup.” See Google’s backup instructions and step-by-step phone backup guide.
- Check the account and turn backup on. Make sure the Google Account shown is one you can access. Review the available data categories and enable the ones you want included.
- Start a manual backup. Tap Back up now. Open Backup details to review the selected categories and their status; Google says saved data appears as “On” beneath the data types selected.
- Wait for the backup to finish. Google says, “Your Google One backup can take up to 24 hours.” That is a possible duration, not a claim that every backup takes that long. Check the status rather than treating the button press as proof of completion. Google One’s backup guidance gives the duration and troubleshooting steps.
Check photos, videos, and files separately
Photos and videos
Google Photos has its own backup control, separate from the main device backup. Open Google Photos, check the backup setting and account, and confirm the app reports that backup is complete. Google’s photo backup instructions explain the control. Do not assume that a completed device backup means every photo or video has been copied.

Downloads and other important files
Inspect downloads and any files that would be difficult to replace. Google’s Android-to-Android transfer guidance says that some downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Play apps, and app data may not transfer in that process; that is migration guidance, not a definitive inventory of what every phone backup includes. If an important file is not represented in Backup details, make another copy. Google One Help describes manually uploading files and folders to Google Drive.
Protect the backup and make sure you can access it
Use a secure screen lock—PIN, pattern, or password—which Google recommends to help protect backup data. Confirm you know the credentials for the Google Account used for the backup; a copy tied to an account you cannot access is of limited use. Google’s help page says a Google Account includes 15 GB at no charge, shared across Google services; check your account’s current storage before relying on that allowance because storage policies can change. If space is full, the backup may not complete. Google One Help also says device backup data other than photos and videos is erased if the device is not used for 57 days. That is an inactivity-retention rule, not a waiting period for an update. Google One backup details.

If the backup will not start or data seems missing
- Backup does not start: Check that the phone is online, use Wi-Fi if possible, charge the battery, and check available Google storage. Google also recommends updating or opening Google One when directed by its troubleshooting guidance. Google One troubleshooting.
- A category is absent or not saved: Reopen Backup details and check the category status. App coverage varies, so consult the app developer for data the app does not include in its backup.
- You cannot find a copy: Check the destination for that type of data: Google Contacts for contacts, Google Photos for backed-up photos and videos, and Drive for files you uploaded manually.
- You are preparing for a restore: Google says restore options differ by device and Android version, and a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version.
