Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Connect your current console to the internet, allow the game to sync, then sign in to the destination console with the account that created the save and launch the game. A digital game entitlement and a game save are separate: claiming access to a digital copy does not itself back up or restore progress.
Sync your save before you switch
- On the console with your current progress: connect to the internet and open the game you want to keep playing. Allow it to save and sync before you move on. Xbox describes cloud transfer for saves created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and moved between those console families; its guidance does not provide a button-by-button manual backup process. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance also notes that features vary by game.
- On the destination Xbox One or Series X|S: connect to the internet and sign in with the same Xbox account that created the save.
- Launch the same game: let it retrieve or sync the save before continuing. If the game or console reports a sync conflict, do not choose an option that overwrites the copy you want to keep; check the game’s support instructions before proceeding.
Keep the game license and save data separate
Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support its disc-to-digital offer. Eligible players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game; the physical disc continues to work as before. The announcement describes access to the game, not a save export or backup. Secure the save separately by syncing it before relying on a digital copy. Xbox Wire’s announcement does not establish that every disc game is eligible.

Choose a transfer route that fits your situation
| Route | When it fits | What it does—and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox cloud sync | You can connect the consoles to the internet and are moving saves within the Xbox One and Series X|S families. | Xbox describes cloud transfer for saves between those console families. Title features can vary; this is the relevant route for save continuity, not a manual file copy. |
| Console network transfer | The old console is available, both consoles can use the same local network, and the game’s instructions support the option. | CD Projekt Red documents network transfer as an option for The Witcher 3’s Xbox migration. That title-specific guidance does not prove all games transfer saves the same way. |
| USB or external storage | You need to move or store game installation files, subject to the applicable console and game support. | The sources cited here do not establish a removable-drive workflow for backing up Xbox One or Series X|S save files. Do not treat an external drive as a save backup based on this guidance. |
When to check the game’s own instructions
Transfer behavior can depend on the title, generation, and edition. If you are moving between different console generations or game editions, or playing an Xbox 360 title through backward compatibility, verify that specific game’s save-transfer instructions rather than assuming the Xbox One-to-Series X|S cloud guidance applies. Microsoft also advises developers to validate that saves and related settings can be accessed on a second console of the same platform generation, reinforcing that title implementation matters. Microsoft’s GDK guidance is written for developers, not as a consumer transfer procedure.
Example: The Witcher 3
For The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red tells Xbox players to ensure their saved data has uploaded to the cloud before continuing on Xbox Series X|S. Its support instructions also describe connecting both consoles to the same network and using the system’s network transfer option. Follow the publisher’s current steps for that game; do not assume its network-transfer option is available or behaves identically in other titles. CD Projekt Red’s Xbox save-transfer instructions
