Before switching phones, make a fresh WhatsApp backup on the old device or use WhatsApp’s supported phone-to-phone transfer. Check that the backup completed or the transfer is ready, use the same phone number for the move, and keep the old phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you have confirmed your chats on the new one. WhatsApp does not store your chat history on its servers, so it cannot recreate chats that were never backed up or transferred.
Choose the transfer route for your phones
The right steps depend on the old and new phone’s operating systems, whether you can still use the old phone, and whether you can access the account and number associated with WhatsApp.

| Move | Practical route | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| Android to Android | Google Account backup and restore, or WhatsApp’s direct Chat Transfer | Direct transfer uses nearby phones and a QR code; it is separate from a Google Account backup. |
| iPhone to iPhone | iCloud backup and restore, or a supported transfer option | Check the last iCloud backup time and make sure both iCloud and the iPhone have enough space. |
| Android to iPhone | WhatsApp’s supported Move to iOS process | Start the migration during iPhone setup; the transferred data is not automatically backed up to iCloud. |
| iPhone to Android | WhatsApp’s supported local transfer process | Follow the current device and setup requirements; the local transfer does not automatically create a Google Account backup. |
If the old phone is unavailable, cloud restore may work only if a usable backup already exists and you can meet its account, number, and storage requirements. Direct transfer generally needs both phones working and a compatible transfer path. WhatsApp’s live help pages, including How to transfer your chat history and About changing phones, should be checked for current steps and device requirements.

On the old phone, use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature before moving the account and chats. Do not simply register the new number on the new phone first: WhatsApp warns this can result in lost chat history. If you no longer have access to the old account or device, recovery may be limited because WhatsApp does not keep chat history on its servers.

Back up before moving
Android: save a Google Account backup
- On the old Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Choose or confirm the Google Account for the backup and configure the backup option shown in your version of WhatsApp. Labels may vary.
- Start a backup, then check the displayed time or status to confirm it completed before you switch phones.
- Make sure the same Google Account is available on the new phone, and that the account and phone have enough storage for the backup and restore.
WhatsApp backups are associated with both the Google Account and the WhatsApp phone number. Google may automatically delete a WhatsApp backup that has not been updated for five months. A later backup in the same Google Account overwrites the previous one, so you cannot restore that replaced backup. WhatsApp chat backups are not end-to-end encrypted unless you enable encrypted backup.
iPhone: check and run an iCloud backup
- On the old iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Check the displayed backup time and size. If needed, start a new backup and wait for it to complete before proceeding.
- Ensure there is enough free space in iCloud and on the iPhone, and that you can use the relevant iCloud account on the new device.
- If you need videos in the backup, turn on Include videos before making that backup.
An iCloud restore requires an existing backup and the same WhatsApp phone number. Messages received or sent after the most recent backup are not included in that backup.

Use direct transfer when both phones are available
Android to Android
WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer moves chat and media history directly between Android phones. Its listed requirements include Android 6 or later on both phones, the same WhatsApp number, and a new phone that has not yet been registered on WhatsApp. Keep the phones nearby, turn on Wi-Fi on both, and connect both to power. They do not need to be connected to an internet network for this local transfer.
- Install or open WhatsApp on the new phone and follow setup until it displays the transfer QR code. Do not register WhatsApp on the new phone before starting the transfer.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and follow the Chat Transfer prompts to scan the QR code on the new phone.
- Keep both phones unlocked, with WhatsApp open, while the transfer runs. Messaging pauses during the transfer.
- When it finishes, check the conversations and media on the new phone before erasing or uninstalling anything on the old one.
Android to iPhone
WhatsApp’s supported route uses Apple’s Move to iOS app during iPhone setup. Follow WhatsApp’s current instructions for supported Android and iOS versions and app versions. Start the WhatsApp data migration from the Android phone when prompted in the Move to iOS flow; after setup, install or open WhatsApp on the iPhone and verify using the same phone number. The transferred chats are not in iCloud until you make a separate iCloud backup on the iPhone.

iPhone to Android
WhatsApp’s supported route starts on the iPhone and uses a QR code and local Wi-Fi transfer to Android. Its current instructions specify the required Android version and WhatsApp versions; follow those requirements, use the same phone number, and keep the old phone’s data until the transfer is confirmed. A local transfer does not itself put the chats in cloud storage. If you want cloud recovery on the destination phone, make a Google Account backup from WhatsApp on Android after migration.
For either cross-platform direction, check WhatsApp’s current instructions for the exact transfer path before starting: supported versions and exclusions can differ. WhatsApp identifies some data that may not transfer, including peer-to-peer payment messages and selected Channel media. Do not assume every type of account or chat data will move.

- Reliable Transfers. Move content between your USB-C or Lightning iPhone, iPad Pro, Mac, and other compatible devices(2).
After the move: verify chats and make a new backup
- Open WhatsApp on the new phone and confirm that the expected conversations and recent messages are present.
- Open important chats and check for media you need, especially if you relied on a backup setting that may exclude videos or used a transfer path with exclusions.
- Once the move is verified, create a new cloud backup on the destination platform if you want cloud recovery going forward.
- Only after verification should you consider deleting, resetting, or uninstalling WhatsApp on the old phone.
If the backup or transfer fails
If WhatsApp is already active on the new phone, a transfer may need to be started again before activation. WhatsApp says old and new chat histories cannot be merged; its troubleshooting guidance may require uninstalling WhatsApp or restarting setup on the destination phone. First confirm the old phone still has the history you need before changing setup.
- For a stalled transfer, restart both phones and try again while keeping them nearby, unlocked, and connected to power.
- For backup or restore trouble, check the internet connection, available device and cloud storage, account sign-in, and that you are using the same phone number and the correct Google Account or iCloud account.
- Do not delete the old phone’s WhatsApp data while troubleshooting. WhatsApp Help Center explains that it cannot restore chats for you because chat history is not stored on its servers.
For the latest interface labels and recovery steps, consult WhatsApp Help Center’s Can’t transfer chat history and the relevant backup or transfer instructions.
