How to Back Up Steam Games You Already Own

Steam’s game backup tool saves supported installation files for later restoration. Learn its limits, how to restore a copy, and what to save separately.

To back up one compatible game, open your Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Backup game files, select a destination, and choose Create Backup. This preserves the game’s installation files—not necessarily its saves, settings, or custom content—so copy those separately if you need them.

What Steam’s backup feature saves—and what it does not

Steam’s built-in backup tool creates a copy of a supported game’s installation files so you can restore the game later without starting the same installation download from scratch. It is useful when you want a portable copy of one game, need to reinstall Steam, or want to keep game files somewhere other than the computer’s usual storage.

The feature is best understood as an installation backup, not a complete backup of everything associated with a game. Steam says backups of Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. For third-party games, save locations vary because each developer determines where saves are stored. A successful installation backup can therefore restore the game itself while leaving your progress, preferences, or downloaded additions behind.

  • Included: supported game installation files handled by Steam’s backup feature.
  • Not assured: saved games, configuration files, custom maps, and other player-created content.
  • Separate task: locate and copy the saves or custom files you want to preserve, then restore them to the appropriate locations after reinstalling.

Steam’s support guide does not establish a universal backup size, a guaranteed reduction in download time, or a particular success rate. The amount of storage you need depends on the games selected, while restoration results depend on the state of the backup, the Steam client, and the game’s compatibility with the tool.

A backup also does not transfer ownership. When you restore it, you still need to sign in to the Steam account that owns the game, and Steam may need to validate or install the title through that account.

Before you start

Check the game’s installation status and decide what you are trying to protect. The per-game command is intended for a game that is already installed and has finished downloading, installing, and patching through Steam. If you only need to move an existing collection during a Steam reinstall, the steamapps method described below may be more appropriate.

  • Make sure the game is fully installed rather than still updating.
  • Choose a destination folder that you can access later and that has enough free space for the backup files.
  • Decide whether the destination should be separate from the computer, such as an external hard drive or external SSD.
  • Identify saves, settings, maps, and other custom files before removing or changing the original installation.
  • Plan to test an important backup while the original installation is still available.

Steam does not require a particular drive brand, drive type, interface, or speed. An external drive is optional, but keeping a copy away from the computer can protect it from a failure affecting the original storage. Steam’s guide also mentions moving or burning completed backup files, so buying new hardware is not a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up one installed game

Use the per-game backup command for a game that is already installed. Steam’s current support instructions use the following Library path:

  1. Open Library in the Steam client.
  2. Right-click the game you want to preserve and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files, then choose Backup game files.
  4. Choose the folder where Steam should create the backup.
  5. Select Create Backup and allow the process to finish without interrupting it.
  6. Select Open folder to inspect the finished backup. Copy or move the resulting files to another storage location if you want a copy kept away from the computer.

The command may not appear for every title. Steam says the tool is for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. A game that relies on a separate installer or downloader may not be compatible, even though it appears in your Library.

Choose and organize the destination

Use a destination that will remain understandable months later. A folder named for the game can make it easier to distinguish multiple backups, and keeping a simple note of the game title and date can help when you have several copies. Do not rename or edit the generated files while Steam is creating the backup. After Steam reports completion, use Open folder to see what was produced, then make any additional copy you need.

If the destination is an external hard drive or SSD, eject it safely after copying is complete and store it somewhere protected from accidental damage. If you keep the only copy on the same internal drive as the installed game, a drive failure could remove both. That is a storage choice rather than a special Steam requirement, but it matters when the backup is intended for recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for completion and check the result

Do not assume a backup is usable simply because you started the operation or see files appearing. Steam recommends testing backups after creation to check their integrity for future reinstallation. At minimum, confirm that the process finished and that the output folder contains the generated files. If the backup matters, attempt a restore when practical rather than waiting until the original installation is gone.

Steam notes that interruption or interference from other applications can prevent successful creation. If the operation stops unexpectedly, close interfering applications where practical, start the backup again, and verify the newly completed copy. Keep the original game installed until you have a backup you are prepared to rely on. Avoid treating a partially created folder as a completed archive.

Restore a game from backup

To restore, use the Steam client and point it to the directory containing the backup files. The account you sign into must own the game; a backup preserves files, not the game license.

  1. Install Steam if needed, then sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
  2. Launch Steam and choose Steam > Restore Game Backup.
  3. Browse to the directory containing the backup files.
  4. Follow Steam’s prompts to install the game.
  5. After installation, restore separately copied saves and custom files to their relevant locations if the game requires them.

Steam’s restore process expects the backup directory, not merely an arbitrary folder containing unrelated game files. Keep the generated backup together when you move it. If you created more than one backup, identify the intended game before choosing a folder so you do not start with the wrong copy.

Steam warns that special characters in its installation path can interfere with restoration. Its example is a path such as C:Steam安装路径Steam. If restoration does not complete and your Steam path contains nonstandard characters, that path is one factor to investigate; do not assume it is the only possible cause. The support material is clearest for Windows-style paths and does not establish every operating-system-specific variation, so labels and path behavior can differ as Steam updates its client.

If restored files seem damaged

Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command can check an installed game. Open the game’s Properties > Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files. Verification may report some files as failing normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Do not delete configuration files solely because they appear in a verification result; check whether they contain settings or other information you want to keep.

Verification is a check on the installed copy, not a substitute for preserving saves. If the game launches but your progress is missing, look for the separately copied save data and follow the developer’s instructions for putting it back. If the restore itself failed, confirm that you selected the directory containing the Steam backup files and that the Steam account is the one that owns the title.

Preserve saves and custom files separately

Before removing an installation, identify the game data that matters to you. For a third-party game, consult that developer’s documentation or ask the developer where saved games are stored. There is no single save-folder location that applies to all games, and the Steam installation backup should not be assumed to include those files. Some games may also use cloud synchronization or their own launchers, but you should still follow the developer’s documented procedure rather than assume every personal file will return automatically.

For Valve games, Steam identifies several game-directory folders that may contain custom files: cfg, downloads, maps, materials, and SAVE. If you use custom content in those locations, copy the relevant files separately and put them back in the corresponding folders after restoring the game. The folder names are examples of locations to check, not a promise that every game uses every folder.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Make a separate copy of saves, settings, maps, or other custom material you want to retain.
  • Keep the copies organized by game so you can identify where each belongs.
  • Preserve more than one dated copy if a save is especially valuable and the game frequently overwrites it.
  • Restore files only to the appropriate game locations; overwriting existing files may replace newer saves or settings.
  • Launch the restored game after copying personal data and confirm that the expected progress and settings are present.

Do not assume that a successful game-file restore recreates a customized multiplayer setup. Steam specifically separates custom maps and configuration files from the installation backup for Valve-created games, so those files deserve their own copy and restore step.

Backing up all installed games is a different job

If your aim is to preserve a full Steam installation rather than make a portable backup of one game, Steam recommends using its Moving a Steam Installation method. Steam says this approach can save time and simplify backup and restore for all games. That is distinct from running Backup game files separately for an individual supported title.

There is also an important difference between moving an installation and making an independent backup. A moved steamapps folder can help preserve installed content during a Steam reinstall, but a copy kept only on the same drive is not an independent safety copy if that drive fails. If you are uninstalling Steam and want to preserve game files for a future Steam installation, Steam says to move or copy the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. Keep a separate copy on another storage device if you need protection against loss of the computer’s drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s uninstall guidance warns that uninstalling removes Steam and installed game content. Before proceeding, make sure the content you intend to preserve is outside the Steam directory and that you can identify the copy you will use later. A folder that was moved but not checked is not the same as a tested backup. Preserve saves and custom files separately even when the complete installation is being moved.

Use the all-installation method when your priority is continuity through a Steam reinstall and you have enough storage to retain the library structure. Use the per-game backup when you want a portable archive for one compatible title. Neither choice changes the need to retain personal game data separately.

Choose the right method for your goal

Goal Method What it handles Important limit
Keep a portable copy of one compatible installed game Backup game files from that game’s Properties > Installed Files Creates Steam backup files for the selected game Saves and custom files may need to be copied separately; the feature is not compatible with every title
Preserve an existing Steam installation while reinstalling Steam Steam’s Moving a Steam Installation guidance; preserve steamapps outside the Steam directory before uninstalling Keeps installed game content available for the future Steam installation A local move is not automatically an independent backup, and game saves or custom content still need separate consideration
Reuse game files on another PC on the same local network Local Network Game Transfers between Steam clients Copies game installation and update files between clients on the same LAN Transfers do not send local saves or configuration files; speed depends on network conditions

These methods solve different problems. The per-game backup creates a set of backup files for later restoration. Moving or copying steamapps is aimed at keeping an installation’s content through a Steam reinstall. Local Network Game Transfers are for moving game content between clients on the same network, not for making a separate archival backup. Pick the method based on whether you need a restore copy, continuity during a reinstall, or a way to reuse files on another PC.

Use Local Network Game Transfers to set up another PC

If the other computer is on the same LAN and runs a Steam client, Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers can copy game installation and update files between Steam clients. This may avoid downloading those files from Steam content servers and can be faster, depending on your network. It is a transfer path for game content, not a substitute for copying saves or configuration files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it when the source files are still available on one computer and the goal is to set up another Steam client on the local network. Both clients need to be available to Steam on that network, and the destination still uses the account and installation process appropriate to that PC. For an off-computer copy intended for later restoration, use a backup destination you control instead. Steam’s transfer guidance does not establish a guaranteed speed or time saving, so results will vary with the network and the files being transferred.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

A local transfer also is not a historical archive. If the source computer is lost, the transferred files are not a replacement for a separately stored backup, and they do not carry local saves or configuration files. Copy those personal files independently when you move to the new PC.

Compatibility and practical limits

Steam says the backup tool works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. It cautions that many games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work, including many MMO-style and third-party free-to-play games. Do not assume that every game visible in your Library can be backed up through this feature.

If the command is unavailable or a title does not produce a usable backup, that may reflect the game’s installation method rather than a problem with your storage device. For games outside the tool’s compatibility, use the developer’s instructions for preserving game data and saves. A separate launcher may have its own repair, export, or backup process, but Steam’s backup command does not promise to capture it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official guidance does not establish every operating-system-specific variation, so menu labels or path behavior may differ as Steam updates its client. If a label has moved, look for the equivalent command in the game’s Properties and Installed Files areas rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Backing up only the game and expecting progress to follow. Save files are separate in many cases; locate and copy them independently.
  • Deleting the original before checking the copy. Confirm the backup completed and test it when practical before relying on it for reinstallation.
  • Uninstalling Steam while steamapps remains inside its directory. Move or copy that folder elsewhere first if you intend to preserve installed content for a future Steam installation.
  • Confusing a local move with disaster recovery. If the only copy remains on the same drive, a drive failure can take it with the original.
  • Assuming network transfer includes personal game data. Local Network Game Transfers send game installation and update files, not local saves or configuration files.
  • Deleting files after verification reports a mismatch. Some local configuration files may fail verification normally and should not be replaced.
  • Backing up an unsupported title with the wrong tool. Third-party installers and downloaders can make a game incompatible with Steam’s backup feature.
  • Restoring from an incomplete or mixed folder. Keep each generated backup together and test it before the original installation is removed.
  • Ignoring the Steam path. Special characters in the installation path can interfere with restoration, so check the path if a restore will not complete.

Frequently asked questions

Does Steam’s backup feature save my game progress?

Not necessarily. Steam says Valve-game backups do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. Third-party save locations vary. Find the location in the developer’s documentation and copy those files separately.

Can I back up every game in my Steam Library?

No. Steam limits the tool to games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Many games using third-party installers or downloaders, including many MMO-style and third-party free-to-play games, may not work with it.

Do I need an external hard drive?

No. Steam accepts a suitable destination folder and also describes moving or burning completed backup files. An external hard drive or SSD is optional if you want the copy separated from the computer; choose storage with enough room for the games you plan to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I restore the backup to a different computer?

Yes, follow Steam’s restore workflow on the other computer, install Steam, and sign in to the account that owns the game. Browse to the backup directory with Steam > Restore Game Backup, then restore separately preserved saves and custom files.

What if Steam says the backup is damaged?

Confirm that creation completed and that you are using the complete generated folder. After installation, run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Some configuration files can fail verification normally, so do not delete them automatically.

Is copying steamapps the same as using Backup game files?

No. Steam recommends its Moving a Steam Installation method for preserving all installed games through a Steam reinstall, and says to move or copy steamapps outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. The per-game command creates a portable backup for one compatible title. A local steamapps copy is not an independent backup unless you store it separately.

Will Local Network Game Transfers copy my saves?

No. Steam says the transfer sends game installation and update files between clients on the same LAN. Local saves and configuration files are not sent, so copy those separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I finish restoring when Steam is installed in a path with unusual characters?

Steam warns that special characters in its installation path can interfere with restoration and gives a path containing Chinese characters as an example. Check that path when troubleshooting, while also confirming the backup directory and account ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Steam backup take?

Steam’s guidance does not provide a universal time estimate. Duration depends on the game files, destination storage, and computer. Let the process finish and verify the resulting folder rather than relying on elapsed time.

Can I delete the original game immediately after creating a backup?

It is safer to keep the original until you have confirmed that creation completed and, when practical, tested a restore. Steam specifically recommends testing backups for future reinstallation.

Will a restored backup include custom maps and settings?

Not automatically in every case. Steam says Valve-game backups exclude custom multiplayer maps and configuration files, and lists cfg, downloads, maps, materials, and SAVE as folders that may contain custom files. Copy and restore the relevant files separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What account do I use during restoration?

Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game. The backup contains installation files, but it does not transfer the license to another account.

The Bottom Line

Use Properties > Installed Files > Backup game files for a supported individual title, let Steam finish, and test the result. Preserve saves, settings, and custom content separately. For an entire installation, move or copy steamapps outside Steam before uninstalling; for another PC on the same LAN, use Local Network Game Transfers. Each method moves game content, but none should be treated as a complete personal-data backup.
