PlayStation states that its cited cloud-storage page provides up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data; the same page lists a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Those are service limits, not an indication of how large a Skyrim save is or how many Skyrim saves you should expect to fit.

There is no separate per-save fee identified in the PlayStation instructions. The relevant requirement is an active PlayStation Plus membership for cloud saved-data storage. If you do not have that membership, the supported individual-PS5-save route described here is unavailable; a full-console backup is the broader USB alternative.
Prepare Skyrim and your PS5
- Use the account that owns the game and add-on. The account used to buy the DLC must be the account signed in when you verify the entitlement.
- Confirm the installed edition. The PlayStation Store lists Skyrim Special Edition for both PS4 and PS5. A PS4 disc owner needs that disc to download or play the PS5 digital version offered through the eligible upgrade route.
- Have an active PlayStation Plus membership. Cloud saved-data storage requires membership.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet. Automatic synchronization also depends on automatic updates being enabled and the console remaining connected while in rest mode.
- Close Skyrim before you check the backup. A game that is still running may not have finished writing the latest save when you begin the upload.
Make a manual save as an extra checkpoint
Inside Skyrim, create a manual save at a recognizable point, such as immediately before installing or launching the DLC. PlayStation game-support material describes manual save points as a normal game feature. The reviewed guidance does not identify a Skyrim-specific save sequence that is required for DLC installation, so treat this as a prudent checkpoint rather than a special installation requirement.
After the save completes, exit to the PS5 home screen and close Skyrim. Do not rely on a save made while the game is suspended if you want the most clearly identifiable checkpoint. Give the file a recognizable in-game description where the game allows it, and note the approximate time; those details make it easier to distinguish the intended checkpoint from older local or cloud entries.

Back up the Skyrim PS5 save to cloud storage
1. Turn on automatic synchronization
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5).
- Open Sync Saved Data.
- Choose Auto-Sync Saved Data and enable it.
Automatic synchronization is useful for ongoing protection, but it is not proof that the manual save you just made is already in the cloud. The console must be online. PlayStation also notes that automatic updates need to be enabled and that the PS5 must stay connected to the internet in rest mode for this automatic route.
If the console has been offline, has been shut down rather than left connected in rest mode, or has automatic updates disabled, do not assume the latest Skyrim checkpoint reached the cloud. Use the manual upload controls and wait for a completion indication instead.
2. Upload the save manually when timing matters
For a DLC installation, a manual check is preferable because it gives you a visible point at which the new save was uploaded.
- Highlight Skyrim on the Games home screen.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Use the upload controls for the Skyrim PS5 saved data and wait for the operation to finish.
You can reach the same upload and download controls from Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5). If the game is shown in more than one edition or installation, select the entry that matches the version you actually play.
3. Confirm the timestamp and synchronization status
Do not start the DLC installation until the save-data screen indicates that the upload or synchronization has completed. Compare the time shown for the cloud copy with the time of the manual save you just made. If the cloud copy is older, return to Skyrim, make sure the game is closed, and repeat the upload.
Keep the cloud copy as a deliberate restore point. If the PS5 asks whether to replace cloud data with local data, stop and check which version is newer and which one you actually want. A newer local save is not automatically the safer save; it may be the result of an unwanted change.

Do not repeatedly choose a replacement prompt without reading its direction. Uploading local data over the cloud can remove the checkpoint you intended to preserve, while downloading cloud data can replace progress currently stored on the console. The date and time are useful evidence, but your intended point in the playthrough is the deciding factor.
4. Download the save only when you need to recover it
If you need to roll back, use the same saved-data controls and choose the download route. Read the version and date shown before confirming. Downloading can replace local saved data, so copy or preserve any newer local progress you still want before accepting a replacement. The cloud service is a recovery copy, not a parallel merge system; it does not combine two different Skyrim timelines for you.

A successful transfer does not merge characters, quests, or separate save histories; it restores the selected saved-data version. If the wrong version is downloaded, stop before making another save, because a subsequent synchronization could make that unwanted state the current cloud copy.
Verify the Skyrim edition and DLC entitlement
PS4 and PS5 versions are separate store options
The PlayStation Store listing identifies Skyrim Special Edition as available for PS4 and PS5. Eligible owners of the PS4 version can obtain the PS5 digital version through the stated upgrade arrangement. If you own the game on disc, the PS4 disc is required to download or play the PS5 digital version. Check the game tile, installed version, and store listing before you assume that the DLC is being installed into the same version that contains your save.
A save associated with the PS4 version and a save associated with the PS5 version should not be treated as interchangeable merely because both are labeled Skyrim. When two tiles or versions appear, record which one you opened to make the checkpoint and upload that matching entry. This avoids backing up an older PS4 entry while installing content for the PS5 version.
Use the purchasing platform account
Bethesda’s support guidance says eligible additional digital content transfers to a next-generation console when you sign in with the same platform account that purchased it. If the DLC does not appear, verify that the PS5 is using that account rather than a family member’s or secondary account, and confirm that the account’s store region is the one associated with the purchase. Regional store availability and entitlements can differ.
Do not use a different account for the upload simply because it is the account currently active on the console. Cloud saved-data access and add-on entitlement checks should be performed while signed in to the account that owns the relevant game and purchase. Account sharing can make the game launch while still leaving the add-on unavailable to the account you are checking.
Do not turn the trophy exception into a save claim
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition FAQ describes the edition’s additional content and notes a specific trophy-transfer exception when upgrading from PS4 to PS5. That exception concerns trophies. It is not evidence that Skyrim saves are deleted, migrated, or made incompatible by installing DLC, so treat trophies and saved games as separate issues.
What USB can and cannot do
You cannot copy one PS5 save to a USB drive
PlayStation’s transfer guidance states: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” This is the key distinction for a Skyrim PS5 backup. Plugging in a flash drive and looking for a single Skyrim save will not produce a supported individual-save copy. The USB save-copy option applies to PS4 game saved data, not PS5 saved data.

Therefore, buying a USB flash drive does not by itself solve the one-save problem. A drive is relevant only if you are making the broader full-console backup described below, and it must be prepared in a format supported by that backup process.

A full-console USB backup is a different operation
PS5 can back up console data to a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. That backup is broader than a Skyrim save: it packages PS5 saved data together with other system information according to the console’s backup process. It can be useful before a major hardware change or a complete system recovery, but it is cumbersome for a single-DLC precaution.
The cited instructions do not establish a particular minimum drive capacity for this task. Choose a compatible FAT32- or exFAT-formatted device with enough free space for the console backup you intend to create, rather than assuming that any small flash drive will work.
Most importantly, restoring a full backup is destructive to data currently on the console. PlayStation’s backup guidance warns: “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.” Do not use a full restore simply to retrieve one Skyrim checkpoint unless you have already decided that replacing the console’s current data is acceptable.
Do not confuse extended storage with backup storage
USB extended storage is intended for game and application data. It can hold installed software, but it does not provide an individual PS5 saved-data archive. A drive being large enough for games does not make it a save-backup drive, and formatting it for extended storage is not the same as preparing it for a system backup.

Install the DLC after the backup is confirmed
- Close Skyrim and verify that your manual save is present.
- Confirm the cloud upload or automatic synchronization time is newer than that save.
- Check that the signed-in PlayStation account purchased the DLC or owns the entitlement.
- Confirm that the installed Skyrim edition matches the edition for which the add-on was purchased.
- Install the DLC through the normal PlayStation download and installation process.
- Launch Skyrim and check that the add-on’s content is present.
- Keep the cloud checkpoint until you have loaded the game, confirmed your save, and decided that the new state is stable.
The reviewed official PlayStation and Bethesda pages do not say that installing Skyrim DLC deletes saves. Therefore, do not treat save deletion as an established consequence of the installation. The backup protects against ordinary problems such as choosing the wrong account, downloading the wrong cloud version, or needing to undo an unwanted local change.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
Auto-Sync is enabled, but the cloud copy is old
Close Skyrim completely, reconnect the PS5 to the internet, and check the saved-data screen again. If the timestamp still does not change, use the manual Upload/Download Saved Data controls. Automatic synchronization is dependent on the console’s online and rest-mode conditions; it is not instantaneous in every situation.
The upload option is missing
Confirm that you are viewing Saved Data (PS5), not the PS4 saved-data menu. The individual USB-copy controls belong to PS4 saved data, while PS5 saved data is handled through cloud synchronization or a full-console backup.
You see multiple Skyrim entries
Compare each entry’s platform, edition, and timestamp. Select the PS5 entry that corresponds to the installed game. Do not overwrite a newer cloud copy simply because a local entry appears first in the list.

The DLC is not available after installation
Check the purchasing account, the game’s edition, and the store region associated with the transaction. A PS4 disc owner should also confirm that the disc is available when the PS5 digital version requires it. Bethesda’s entitlement guidance depends on using the same platform account that made the purchase.
The cloud menu shows no Skyrim save
Verify that the game was closed after the manual save and that you are in the PS5 saved-data section. If the game was played under another PlayStation account, switch to that account before checking its cloud storage. Also confirm that the account has the required PlayStation Plus membership; cloud storage is account-based rather than a universal copy of every console user’s saves.
You are asked to replace cloud data
Cancel the prompt until you identify which side contains the checkpoint. Uploading replaces the cloud version with local data; downloading replaces local data with the cloud version. If both versions matter, keep the one you do not want to overwrite in mind and avoid making a new save until the decision is clear.
You are considering a USB restore
Stop before confirming the restore and make sure you understand its scope. A full-console restore can erase data currently saved on the PS5. It is not equivalent to downloading one Skyrim save from cloud storage.

Can a full-console backup restore only Skyrim?
