A Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium subscription matters when you want Copilot integrated into supported Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Microsoft 365 services, together with storage and the rest of the plan bundle.
The short answer: free Copilot works without Microsoft 365
A Microsoft 365 subscription is not a prerequisite for every kind of Copilot use. Microsoft distinguishes its free Copilot experience from Copilot features delivered inside Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The free service can answer questions using web search and can work in Microsoft Edge to summarize pages or provide related insights. Those capabilities are separate from the subscription benefits described on Microsoft’s plan pages.

The practical dividing line is where you want to use the assistant. If you only need a general-purpose chat assistant, web answers or an Edge summary, start with free Copilot. If you want AI commands while you are editing a document, analyzing a worksheet, preparing slides or working through email, you need an eligible Microsoft 365 plan and a sign-in that has the relevant entitlement.
Microsoft’s own comparison explains the distinction between free Microsoft Copilot and Copilot in Microsoft 365. Availability can depend on the plan, the application, the account type and the country or region.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
What you can do with free Copilot
Free Copilot is useful when your task does not require the assistant to be embedded in a paid Microsoft 365 application. Microsoft describes real-time answers based on web search and Edge features that summarize or explain the webpage you are viewing. You can use those functions without buying Personal, Family or Premium.
Typical free-use cases
- Ask for an explanation of a current event, technical concept or unfamiliar term.
- Request a web-informed outline before you begin writing.
- Use Edge to condense a long page into key points or identify useful details.
- Brainstorm wording, plans or presentation ideas in a chat conversation.
These examples describe the type of work Microsoft associates with Copilot; they are not a promise that every feature appears in every account, browser or region. The free experience also does not turn a personal copy of Word, Excel or PowerPoint into an AI-enabled Microsoft 365 installation.
What a Microsoft 365 subscription adds
A subscription combines Copilot access with the conventional Microsoft 365 bundle. Microsoft’s individual-plan page lists the core productivity applications and services, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive storage. The exact application list, storage terms, AI features and offers should be checked for your country before purchase at Microsoft’s current individual-plan page.
Copilot inside supported applications
For an eligible subscription owner, Copilot can appear inside supported Microsoft 365 desktop applications rather than in a separate chat window. Microsoft gives examples such as planning, drafting or polishing writing, working with email and creating presentations. In practice, the command you see depends on the application version, your account, the plan and the feature’s regional rollout.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
The non-AI value of the bundle
The subscription decision is not only an AI decision. You are also paying for Microsoft 365 applications, OneDrive storage and other services listed for the selected tier. Someone who already needs those applications or cloud storage may find the integrated Copilot a useful addition; someone who only wants occasional questions may receive little extra value from a paid plan.
Microsoft 365 individual plans compared
The following figures are the monthly prices displayed on Microsoft’s US plan page on October 13, 2026. They are not worldwide or permanent prices. Microsoft also presents annual billing and terms, and local taxes, currency, promotions and renewal pricing can differ.
| Option | US monthly price shown October 13, 2026 | Copilot position | Other plan value described by Microsoft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Copilot | No Microsoft 365 subscription | Web answers and Edge assistance | Standalone Copilot experience |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 | Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps for the plan owner; higher usage than free is described | Microsoft 365 applications and OneDrive storage for one person |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 | Copilot and higher usage are described for the subscription owner | Microsoft 365 services for one to six people, plus applications and storage listed on the plan page |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 | Highest usage positioning and selected premium-only capabilities are described | A broader individual-plan bundle; sharing and feature terms should be checked on the current plan page |
The plan page is the authoritative place to verify the live price and included services because Microsoft can change both. The figures above identify the offer that was displayed on the stated date, not a price guarantee.

Personal: the straightforward one-person choice
Personal is presented for one person. It is the simplest paid route when you want Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 applications and also want the standard applications and OneDrive storage that come with the plan. The plan page describes more Copilot usage than the free experience, but Microsoft does not treat a quoted allowance as permanent: limits can change with the feature and service conditions.

Choose Personal when the account holder is the only regular user and the main reason for subscribing is a combination of application access, storage and in-app assistance. If your household needs several separate Microsoft 365 users, compare Family instead of assuming that one Personal subscription can be shared.
Family: several Microsoft 365 users, one Copilot owner
Family is described as covering one to six people for the Microsoft 365 services included in the plan. That sharing scope does not mean every person receives the subscription owner’s in-app AI benefits. Microsoft states that the AI features in Family are available only to the subscription owner and cannot be shared.
Why the distinction matters
Suppose one person buys Family and invites other household members to use the included Microsoft 365 services. Those members may have access to the shared-plan services under Microsoft’s terms, but they should not be expected to see the owner’s Copilot functions inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. The purchaser’s account remains the account associated with the plan’s in-app AI benefits.

That chat access should not be confused with the owner-only AI features inside Microsoft 365 applications. If several people need in-app Copilot, check Microsoft’s current account and licensing terms rather than buying Family on the assumption that AI sharing works like application sharing. See the Microsoft 365 Copilot FAQ for the current explanation.

Premium: more usage and selected higher-tier capabilities
Premium is positioned above Family. Microsoft describes it as adding higher usage and selected capabilities that are reserved for the premium tier. The precise features can change as Microsoft introduces new models and services, so the live plan comparison is more reliable than a static list copied from an older article.
Premium makes sense when you already want the Microsoft 365 bundle and regularly run into the practical limits of a lower tier, or when a premium-only capability is important to your work. It is harder to justify if you only need occasional web chat, because free Copilot covers that basic use without a subscription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copilot limits are plan- and feature-dependent
There is no single permanent “Copilot quota” that applies to every Microsoft 365 subscriber. Microsoft Support says limits can vary by plan, feature, entry point and system conditions, and can change as AI models become available. A limit may therefore differ between a chat interaction, an in-app generation action and another Copilot entry point.
For that reason, avoid choosing a plan based on an old article that quotes a fixed number of credits or messages. Before subscribing, open Microsoft’s AI credits and limits documentation and check the feature you actually intend to use. Treat any displayed allowance as current product information, not a lifetime guarantee.

How to decide whether you need a subscription
- Define the job. If you need web research, general explanations or occasional brainstorming, test the free Copilot experience first. If you need commands while editing a Microsoft 365 file, continue to the next step.
- Identify the application. List the programs in which you expect Copilot to appear, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. Confirm that the specific feature is supported in your region and subscription tier.
- Check the non-AI bundle. Decide whether you also need the Microsoft 365 applications, OneDrive storage or other services. If not, the paid plan may offer less value than free Copilot.
- Choose the user arrangement. Personal is designed for one person. Family can cover one to six people for the listed services, but its in-app AI benefits belong to the subscription owner. Do not count every shared user as a Copilot beneficiary.
- Compare current limits and billing. Review the live plan page for monthly versus annual billing, regional pricing, renewal terms and the current AI limits. Premium is worth considering only when its higher usage or a listed premium capability addresses a real requirement.
- Sign in with the right account. Microsoft 365 subscribers access Copilot through Microsoft 365 on the web or the mobile app, while the subscription owner can also access Copilot inside supported desktop applications. Using a different Microsoft account can make an otherwise eligible feature appear unavailable.
Common situations and the plan that fits
“I only want an AI chat assistant.”
Start with free Copilot. A Microsoft 365 subscription is unnecessary for the basic web and Edge experience.
“I write documents every week and want help in Word.”
Look at Personal if you are the only user, or at Family if other people also need the included Microsoft 365 services. In either case, verify that the account receiving the plan is the one that needs in-app Copilot.
“My household needs Microsoft 365, and everyone wants AI.”
Family may cover the household’s applications and storage, but Microsoft’s owner-only rule means the purchaser should not assume that every member receives the same in-app AI features. Review the current licensing details before buying.

Access, account and regional checks
Microsoft’s free-versus-paid guidance says subscribers can sign in through Microsoft 365 on the web or the mobile app, and subscription owners can use Copilot in Microsoft 365 desktop applications when the plan and application support it. The visible controls can differ by operating system, application version, account type and rollout stage.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription or has the intended entitlement.
- Install the current Microsoft 365 application updates before troubleshooting a missing Copilot control.
- Check the plan page for your country, because the US price and feature presentation do not establish worldwide availability.
- Read the current limits page when a feature stops responding or reports that you have reached an allowance; the restriction may be feature-specific rather than a complete loss of Copilot access.
In short, Microsoft 365 is an upgrade path to integrated, plan-based Copilot rather than a prerequisite for Copilot itself. Free Copilot handles standalone web and Edge use; Personal, Family and Premium add Microsoft 365 applications, storage and varying levels of in-app AI, with the subscription owner and current limits determining what is actually available.
