How to Back Up Samsung Galaxy Photos Before Resetting Camera Settings

A Camera app settings reset is not a factory reset. If you plan to erase your Galaxy, choose a photo backup method and verify it before proceeding.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First check which reset you mean. Samsung’s Camera app Reset settings restores camera options to their defaults; it is different from a phone Factory data reset, which erases personal data, including photos. If you are only resetting the Camera app, a photo backup is not required for that action. If you are erasing the phone, copy or sync your photos and verify the backup before proceeding.

Camera reset or factory reset: which one are you doing?

For a Camera app reset, open Camera and select Settings > Reset settings > Reset. On Galaxy S25 series phones and devices running One UI 7.0 or later, Samsung says to open Camera, tap Quick settings (four dots), then tap Settings. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software. Samsung describes the result as: “The Camera app will be reset to its defaults, which may help clear the error.” Samsung’s Camera troubleshooting instructions cover this option separately from a factory reset.

A phone factory reset is a different operation. Samsung’s general path is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset, though labels and layouts vary. That operation deletes personal data, including photos, so back up anything you want to keep before confirming it. You may need your Samsung account password to complete the reset.

Choose a photo backup method

Method Best for What to check
USB copy to a computer A direct local copy of photos and videos A data-capable cable, file transfer access, and that copied photos open on the computer
Smart Switch A broader phone backup or restore to a PC, Mac, or supported microSD card Supported device options and the contents of the resulting backup
Gallery sync with OneDrive Cloud access to synced Gallery photos Linked Samsung and Microsoft accounts, available cloud space, and completed sync
Google backup Backing up supported device data to a Google account Backup status, Google storage space, and the categories included
USB drive or microSD An offline copy without relying on cloud sync Support for the phone’s port, adapter, OTG connection, or microSD slot

Copy photos to a computer with USB

  1. Connect the Galaxy to the computer using a USB cable that supports data transfer.
  2. Unlock the phone and approve the connection if prompted. From the USB notification, select the file or image transfer option available on your device.
  3. On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and copy the DCIM folder, or the specific photo folders you want to keep, to the computer.
  4. Open several copied files on the computer to confirm the transfer worked before resetting the phone.

Samsung identifies DCIM as the location for photos and notes that an MTP- or PTP-capable connection is needed. Some computer-and-phone combinations require a different cable or adapter. See Samsung’s instructions for transferring files between a Galaxy device and a computer.

Back up with Smart Switch

Samsung Smart Switch can back up a Galaxy to a PC or Mac and, on supported phones, to microSD. It is useful when you want a broader device backup rather than just a quick photo copy. Do not assume it includes every file: check the available backup options for your device and confirm the backup completed. Samsung describes Smart Switch and other backup options in its guide to backing up and restoring Galaxy data.

Sync Gallery photos to OneDrive

Samsung Gallery can sync with OneDrive when the relevant Samsung and Microsoft accounts are linked. After enabling sync, wait for it to finish and confirm that the photos you need are visible in OneDrive before erasing the phone. Availability, account setup, and cloud storage depend on your accounts and region.

Use Google backup

Samsung’s Google backup instructions give this path: Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Drive > Back up data > Back up now. The available labels may differ by device. Samsung lists photos and videos among backup categories and describes restoring backup data during initial setup. Check the displayed backup status and available Google Account storage before relying on it.

Samsung says automatic backups run over Wi-Fi when the phone is charging and unused for at least two hours. Google Account storage limits apply. Samsung also notes that non-Google-Photos Drive backup data may be deleted after 57 consecutive days without device use. For the full steps and qualifications, see Samsung’s Google backup and restore instructions.

Make an offline copy on external storage

Samsung identifies a USB drive or SD card as possible backup destinations before a device reset. On models with a microSD slot, Samsung Canada explains how to copy files using My Files in its file-transfer and backup guidance. Not every Galaxy has a card slot, particularly newer models. A USB-C flash drive may also work if the phone supports the connection; an adapter may be needed. Confirm compatibility for your exact model before relying on either option.

Verify the backup before erasing the phone

  1. Wait until the computer copy, Smart Switch backup, or cloud sync has finished.
  2. Check the destination itself: open several copied photos on the computer or external drive, or confirm the needed photos are visible in OneDrive or the relevant backup status screen.
  3. For irreplaceable pictures, consider keeping two independent copies, such as one on a computer and another in cloud storage or on external media.
  4. Write down the account credentials you will need to restore data or complete setup. Samsung notes that a Samsung or Google account may be requested during setup.

These checks matter because a backup that is still syncing, incomplete, or inaccessible is not a dependable safeguard against a factory reset.

If you are resetting because the camera has a problem

Try the Camera app’s Reset settings option before considering a factory reset; it restores camera defaults without being the same as erasing the phone. Samsung also recommends checking for Camera app updates. If a downloaded app may be causing the issue, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance describes using Safe mode to diagnose that possibility. A factory reset should not be treated as the next step unless you intend to erase the device and have protected the data you want to keep.
