How to Get the Best Sound From Wireless Headphones: EQ and Playback Settings

For clearer, fuller sound from wireless headphones, start with a good fit, turn off competing sound adjustments, and make small EQ changes while replaying familiar music at a similar volume. Then check the music app, headphone app, and connection settings. There is no single EQ curve or codec that sounds best on every headphone and phone.

How do I get the best sound from my wireless headphones?

  1. Check the fit. Seat the headphones securely and, for in-ear models, try the supplied ear tips until they feel comfortable and stay in place. For over-ear headphones, check that the ear cups sit evenly. A poor fit can undermine what you hear, so establish it before changing settings.
  2. Start from a neutral baseline. Turn off EQ and sound effects, or return them to neutral/default. If several settings are active, you may not know which one is changing the sound.
  3. Adjust one control at a time. Make a small EQ change, replay a familiar passage, and keep it only if it helps at about the same perceived loudness. Avoid raising the overall volume to make an EQ change seem more impressive.
  4. Check the playback route. Look at the music app, the phone’s sound or accessibility settings, and the headphone maker’s companion app. Make sure you know which one is applying the change.
  5. Investigate codecs only if needed. Leave Bluetooth codec selection on automatic/default unless you are troubleshooting a specific compatibility or dropout problem.

Where should I adjust EQ?

EQ may be built into the music app, the phone, or the headphone maker’s app. These controls do not necessarily affect audio in the same way, and a setting available on one headphone model may not exist on another.

In the music app

Spotify’s support instructions for iOS and Android describe opening the profile menu, choosing Settings and privacy, then Playback, and turning on Equalizer. You can choose a preset or move the controls. Spotify also documents an equalizer under Playback on desktop; labels can change with app versions. On Android, Spotify warns that the device’s built-in equalizer may affect other apps as well. Spotify says audio settings cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing on another device. See Spotify’s equalizer instructions.

In the headphone app

Some manufacturers provide model-specific EQ in a companion app. Sony’s WH-XB900N help guide, for example, covers selecting an equalizer setting and viewing the Bluetooth codec in Sony Headphones Connect. Shure’s PLAY guide describes presets and custom EQ presets for supported Shure wireless headphones and earphones. Check your own model’s documentation rather than assuming that all wireless headphones offer the same controls: Sony WH-XB900N help guide and Shure PLAY user guide.

In phone sound or accessibility settings

Phone-level audio adjustments can behave differently from an EQ inside one music app. Apple’s Headphone Accommodations, for instance, can amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies for hearing needs on compatible headphones. Apple offers a guided Customise Audio process based on comparing audio samples, as well as manual adjustment. The feature is an accessibility and personalization option, not a universal EQ for every Bluetooth headphone. Apple says to reset Music EQ, center balance, and set the AirPods equalizer to Recommended before following that process. Check Apple’s Headphone Accommodations instructions for the current supported-device list and steps.

How should I tune EQ without making things worse?

There is no universally best bass-and-treble curve established for every headphone and listener. Treat presets as starting points, not prescriptions. If the sound seems too bass-heavy, too thin, or unclear, make a modest change to the relevant EQ control and compare the same familiar passage before and after.

  • Change one EQ layer at a time; avoid stacking app, phone, and headphone EQ while you are trying to identify what helped.
  • Use small adjustments and listen at a similar perceived loudness. Louder playback can make a change seem preferable even when the EQ itself is not.
  • Compare more than one familiar track if a change sounds good on one recording but distracting on another.
  • If your headphone app offers spatial processing or sound effects, treat them as optional and compare with them off as well.

Do lossless settings make Bluetooth playback lossless?

No. Selecting a lossless option in a music service does not by itself make the Bluetooth link lossless. The service, source device, headphones, and connection route all affect what reaches your ears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify states that its lossless offering supports up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, while noting that the device and connection method determine whether lossless is supported. Its support page distinguishes Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX behavior. That format ceiling is not a guarantee of end-to-end lossless Bluetooth playback or an audible improvement for every listener. Choose the highest setting your service, device, connection route, and data plan support; do not expect the label alone to settle sound quality. See Spotify’s lossless audio guidance.

Should I change my Bluetooth codec?

Usually, leave codec selection on automatic/default. A phone’s menu may list codecs that your connected headphones cannot use, and Android’s codec, sample-rate, bit-depth, channel-mode, and LDAC quality/stability options depend on the device and software implementation. Available menu choices are not proof that the connected pair negotiated that format.

Android’s developer documentation describes codec options such as SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC on supported implementations; codec support varies by source and headphones. Sony also notes that codec effects depend on the connected Bluetooth device and describes a connection-stability priority that favors stability over sound quality. If playback cuts out, a stable connection is generally more useful than a nominally higher-quality setting that interrupts listening. Check your phone and headphone instructions before changing developer options: Android Bluetooth codec reference and Sony WH-XB900N Bluetooth connection guidance.

How can I listen at a safer level?

Do not use EQ as a reason to turn up the volume. The World Health Organization’s 2025 safe-listening examples give 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week and 90 dB for up to four hours per week. WHO recommends keeping device volume no more than 60% of maximum as a general practical rule, monitoring exposure where possible, taking breaks, and using well-fitted or noise-cancelling headphones to reduce the need to raise volume in noisy places. These are general examples, not a personal guarantee: actual exposure and risk depend on both sound level and time. See the WHO safe-listening guidance.

The 2019 WHO-ITU standard sets adult reference exposure at 80 dB for 40 hours per week and a sensitive-user mode at 75 dB for 40 hours per week. These reference values are guidance, not a diagnosis of whether an individual’s listening is safe. The standard is available from the WHO-ITU safe listening devices and systems page.
