Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor broad protection, make a full-console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive before a major system operation. For ongoing protection of individual PS5 saves, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Sony does not provide a way to copy an individual PS5 save from the console to USB using the PS4-style save-copy method. A routine system update and a system-software reinstall are different: Sony says reinstalling deletes console data, but does not say that every normal update does.
Choose the right kind of backup
A full-console backup and a cloud save solve different problems. The USB backup can cover several categories of console data; cloud storage is for saved data. Neither turns an individual PS5 save into a standalone USB file.

| Option | What it protects | Requirements and limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-console USB backup | Saved data, games and apps stored on the console, screenshots and video clips, and settings. | Requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive; Sony warns that not all devices work. Games and apps on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are excluded, as are trophies. Restoring erases the console’s current data. | A broad copy before service, a reset, or another significant system operation. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Saved data. | Requires a paid PlayStation Plus membership. Automatic sync needs the relevant settings and internet access in rest mode; it does not back up captures, settings, or all console content. | Ongoing save protection and moving saves between consoles. |
| Individual PS5 save copied to USB | Not available through Sony’s documented PS4-style USB save-copy route. | Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. | Use cloud storage for saves or make a full-console backup instead. |
Sony lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 consoles as a PlayStation Plus benefit. Its support page lists cloud storage with Essential, Extra, and Premium; check Sony’s current subscription details before relying on plan benefits.

Make a full-console USB backup
Prepare a compatible drive
Connect a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony cautions that not every USB device will work. A drive configured as USB extended storage for games is a different format and cannot serve as the backup drive.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Run the backup from Settings
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the data types you want included, then select Next. The console displays the backup filename and size; you can also enter a description.
- Select Back Up. The console restarts and begins creating the backup.
- When the completion screen appears, select OK. The console restarts again.
Do not turn off the console while the backup is running. Sony warns that interruption may cause data loss or corruption, or damage the console or USB drive.
Know what is and is not included
Sony says the backup can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings; all user data saved on the PS5 is included in backup data. However, games and apps already stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are not included. Trophies are excluded too, so sync trophies separately before backing up.
Protect individual PS5 saves with cloud storage
PlayStation Plus members can use Sony’s cloud storage for saved data. PS5 games can automatically sync saves when a game is closed or the console is in rest mode, if auto-sync and rest-mode internet access are enabled.

Enable internet access in rest mode
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
Enable automatic PS5 save sync
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data.
- Turn on Auto-Sync Saved Data.
Sony says console and cloud storage sync to the most recent data. Before manually uploading or downloading, check which copy is current so you do not overwrite the version you intend to keep.
Upload or download manually
- Upload: Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Download: Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
Understand the risks before restoring a USB backup
Restoring a full backup is not a way to retrieve just one save: it erases all data currently saved on the console, and Sony says erased data cannot be restored. The PS5’s system software must be the same version as, or newer than, the version installed when the backup was made.
- Account and console: Backups are linked to the PlayStation account. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, restoration is limited to the same console. To restore on another console, sign in with the account used for the backup.
- Console Sharing: Restoring disables Console Sharing and Offline Play. Re-enable it afterward if you need those features for access to subscriptions and content.
- Power: Do not turn off the PS5 during backup or restore; interruption can cause data loss or corruption, or damage the console or USB drive.
Update system software without confusing it with a reinstall
For an ordinary update through the console, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Backing up beforehand is prudent, but Sony’s update guidance does not say that every routine update deletes saved data.

If the update download fails
If a download is stuck, find it under Downloads/Uploads, view the error information, and retry. After multiple failed downloads, Sony documents updating through a PC or Mac and USB using Safe Mode. The update file goes in a folder named PS5/UPDATE on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive and must be named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow Sony’s current instructions for the official file and Safe Mode option Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Do not interrupt installation or install directly before or after a power outage.
Reinstalling is destructive
Reinstalling system software is not the same as installing a routine update. Sony says a reinstall deletes all data on the PS5 and describes the process as a factory or hard reset. Safe Mode also has Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) options that delete user data. Read each option carefully before selecting it; other options, such as Repair Console Storage or Restore Default Settings, have different effects.
