To back up Word macros, first find where they are stored. Copy the macro-enabled document or template—such as a .docm document, a .dotm template, or Word’s Normal.dotm—to a separate safe location. To keep individual VBA components as separate files, export the relevant modules or forms from the Visual Basic Editor (VBE). For the most complete backup, keep both a copy of the file and exports of the components you may need to inspect or import elsewhere.
Choose the backup method that matches your goal
A whole-file copy and a VBE export preserve different things. Copy the macro-bearing file when you need to restore its full contents and context; export modules or forms when you want separate VBA component files. Microsoft’s Organizer instructions describe copying a macro into Normal.dotm, which changes where the macro is stored—it does not create an independent backup.

| Method | What it preserves | Useful when | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
Copy the macro-bearing .dotm or .docm file |
The complete file or template containing the macros | You need a whole-file restore copy or want to move the file | You must copy the file that actually holds the macros. A Normal.dotm copy may include other customizations too. See Microsoft’s template and file guidance and macro-enabled format guidance. |
| Export modules or forms from VBE | Selected VBA components as separate files | You want components to inspect, retain separately, or import into another project | It does not back up the full project or template; export availability may vary by VBE version. See Microsoft’s Export File reference. |
Use Organizer to copy a macro into Normal.dotm |
Makes the macro available across documents using the global template | You want a document’s macro stored globally | This is a transfer or storage choice, not a second-location backup. See Microsoft’s Organizer instructions. |
Keep a separate .dotm template |
The macros in that template | You want to keep a macro set outside the global template | How a template is loaded or started differs by platform and Word version. See Microsoft’s template guidance and Word for Mac guidance. |
Find where the macro is stored
A macro saved in an individual document travels with that document. A macro in Normal.dotm is available across documents in that Word installation. A custom macro-enabled template can hold macros too. Before copying or exporting anything, identify the document or template containing the macro; backing up the wrong file will not preserve it.

Copy the complete macro-enabled file or template
- Identify the document or template that contains the macro.
- Save or copy it in the appropriate macro-enabled format: use
.docmfor a macro-enabled document or.dotmfor a macro-enabled template. A.docxor.dotxfile is not the macro-enabled format for these purposes. Microsoft discusses.docmin its legacy document conversion guidance; retain a backup before conversion and check the result after reopening. - Make a second copy in a location separate from the original, such as another drive or a flash drive. Microsoft’s Word for Mac saving guidance notes that files can be saved to a hard disk or flash drive as well as online. Online storage availability can depend on Office sign-in, macOS permissions, OneDrive sync settings, and organizational configuration.
For a template saved in the default user templates location on Mac, Microsoft lists /Users/username/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates. The location can be configured in Word through Word Preferences > Personal Settings > File Locations. See Microsoft’s Normal template guidance.

Export a VBA module or form as a separate file
In desktop Word, open the appropriate VBA project in the Visual Basic Editor, select the module or form, then choose File > Export File. Microsoft’s Export File reference describes saving the active form or module separately. To add a saved component to a project, select the project in VBE and use File > Import File; the source file remains intact and a copy is added to the project.
Export each relevant module or form, and keep a copy of the complete macro-enabled document or template when you also need the full project context. Menu availability can differ between VBE versions. If export is unavailable or the VBA project is protected, do not assume that copying visible code or saving a plain text file recreates the entire project; Microsoft’s reference covers exporting the selected form or module.

Copy a macro into Normal.dotm in Windows desktop Word
If the goal is to make a macro available across documents in that Word installation, Microsoft documents this Organizer workflow for Windows desktop Word:

- Choose View > Macros > View Macros.
- Select Organizer.
- Select the macro and choose Copy to add it to
Normal.dotm.
When recording a macro intended for all new documents, Microsoft says to choose All Documents (Normal.dotm) as its storage location. This makes the macro global in that Word installation; make a separate copy of Normal.dotm elsewhere if you need a backup. See Microsoft’s copy-a-macro instructions.

Move the macro to another computer
For a whole-file transfer, copy the macro-bearing .docm or .dotm file to the other computer. For a macro stored in Normal.dotm, copy that template if you intend to transfer the global template and its customizations. If you only need selected code components, export the modules or forms from VBE and import them into the destination project. These approaches have different scope: component import does not reproduce other template settings or customizations.
Perform the macro work in desktop Word. Microsoft’s macro instructions state that Word for the web requires these tasks to be done manually and direct readers to open the document in the desktop app; do not expect the web app to provide the same VBE or Organizer workflow.

Restore a previous Normal.dotm on Mac after a language change
Microsoft documents a specific recovery case: after changing the primary language setting, Word may retain a previous template named Normal.dotm-(number). If that applies, quit Word, locate the prior copy in Finder, replace the current Normal.dotm, rename the retained backup to Normal.dotm, then restart Word. This is a language-change recovery procedure, not a guarantee of an automatic backup for every lost template. See Microsoft’s Normal template instructions.
Keep the backup safe without enabling unknown macros
Microsoft warns: “Never enable macros in a Microsoft 365 file unless you’re sure you know what those macros do and you want the functionality they provide.” Copying or exporting a file does not require running its macros. Do not weaken macro security just to make a backup. Trust Center settings are app-specific, and an organization’s administrator may prevent changes; see Microsoft’s macro security guidance.

If Word keeps asking to save Normal.dotm
If Word repeatedly asks whether to save changes to Normal.dotm, Microsoft says an installed add-in or macro may have modified the global template. Investigate templates, add-ins, or auto macros rather than simply suppressing the prompt. Deleting an add-in template can reduce its functionality, and replacing Normal.dotm indiscriminately can remove user customizations and macros. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
