Choose the method that matches your goal, keep the complete file set on storage you control, and maintain a second copy for valuable games.
GOG provides offline backup installers. Steam offers a Backup feature with compatibility limits. Epic Games Store’s Offline Mode helps with eligible games that are already installed, but it is not proof that a standalone installer archive exists. None of these methods automatically preserves every save, account entitlement, online service, launcher dependency, or future operating-system compatibility.

Decide what “backup” needs to accomplish
Start by defining the failure you are preparing for. The right archive for reinstalling a game years from now is not the same as the files needed to launch an installed game without an internet connection.

These approaches can be combined. For example, you might keep a GOG installer archive, a separate save backup and an installed copy on a desktop. Treat each as a separate preservation task rather than assuming one file set covers everything.

Inventory the game before downloading anything
Make a short record for each title. This prevents an apparently complete archive from missing a language pack, expansion or save directory.
- Record the storefront account and the exact game edition.
- List included downloadable content, language packs and separate installers shown by the storefront.
- Note whether the game uses a publisher launcher, third-party installer, always-online authentication or multiplayer servers.
- Check where the game stores saves and configuration. Cloud synchronization is not the same as a local backup.
- Estimate the total size of the installers and leave space for later patches or an additional copy.
Do not assume that a game’s installed directory contains saves. Many games place saves in a user profile, a documents folder or a platform-specific data directory. The exact location varies by title, so check the game’s current support documentation or inspect its in-game save and configuration settings.
GOG: download the complete offline installer set
GOG’s purchase-download support identifies an option labeled “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.” This is the clearest route when your goal is to retain installer files outside the client.

- Sign in to your GOG account and open the purchased game’s page in your account library.
- Locate the offline installer option. GOG’s labels and account layout can change, so use the current account page if the wording differs.
- Download every file listed for the game, not just the first executable. Keep companion data files, language files, patches supplied as separate downloads and each DLC installer shown for your edition.
- Let every download finish, then compare the downloaded file list with the list displayed by GOG before moving the archive.
- Create a folder named for the game and edition. Keep all parts together and preserve the original filenames.
- Copy the completed folder to storage you control, then make a second copy if the title is difficult to replace.
A split installer can fail if one part is missing or renamed. Keep the base game and its DLC in a clearly labeled structure, such as separate subfolders under the same game archive, rather than scattering files across several drives.
When updates are not visible yet
GOG’s developer documentation says offline backup installers are generated after a build is published to the Master branch. Post-launch update installers can take several hours to appear. If a newly released patch is not listed immediately, that delay does not by itself mean your account or download is broken. Check again later and retain the installer set you already downloaded.

What the GOG archive does not guarantee
Offline installers give you files to retain; they do not guarantee that a game will run forever. A title can still depend on an activation check, a publisher launcher, a discontinued server, old runtime components or an operating system that no longer supports it. Back up saves separately and keep the account details needed for any required sign-in.
Steam: use Backup only when the game is compatible
Steam has an official Backup feature, but Steam Support states that it is intended for games that completely download, install and patch through Steam. Games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the feature.

- Look for the current Steam Support instructions for the Backup and Restore workflow rather than relying on an old menu guide.
- Confirm that the title downloads, installs and patches entirely through Steam.
- Identify any publisher launcher, external installer, anti-cheat component or separate content manager. Those dependencies can prevent a Steam backup from being sufficient.
- Note the backup-file location selected by Steam and ensure the destination has enough free space.
Because the support page’s interface can change, follow the current labels and prompts shown by Steam when creating and restoring a backup. Do not treat a successful backup as proof that the result is a standalone installer. Steam’s package is a storefront-specific workflow and may still require Steam, account access or other game services during restoration or launch.
Keep saves outside the Steam package
A Steam game backup is primarily about the installed game content. Steam Cloud may synchronize saves for supported titles, but cloud data is not an independent archive under your control. Export or copy local saves and settings separately, and verify that the copy opens or is readable before removing the original installation.
Epic Games Store: separate Offline Mode from archiving
Epic Games Store’s launcher Offline Mode is designed for supported single-player games that are already installed on the device. Epic says that not all games support it. While offline, online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services may be unavailable.

Prepare an installed game for offline launch
- While connected to the internet, install the game through the Epic launcher and start it once.
- Sign in and complete any first-run setup or publisher-launcher authentication the game requires.
- Check the game’s own offline-play requirements. Some titles allow offline launch only after this initial preparation.
- Enable or select the launcher’s Offline Mode according to the current Epic interface, then test the game with the network disconnected.
- Reconnect and synchronize or copy saves before making major changes. Offline play can prevent cloud synchronization.
This test answers whether the existing installation can launch offline; it does not create a downloadable standalone installer. Keep the installed files only if you also understand how the title’s launcher and authentication behave after a drive replacement.
Licensing and delisting limits
Epic’s End User License Agreement states: “The Software is licensed, not sold, to you under the License.” The agreement also notes that, in rare cases, software may be removed from the Store and become unavailable for further download or access, and it restricts copying except where authorized by the agreement or applicable game-specific terms. A local copy is therefore a practical preservation step, not a legal workaround or a promise that the game will remain playable.
Copying an installed game directory: useful, but incomplete
If a storefront offers no suitable archive, you can copy the installed game directory to another drive. This is faster than downloading again and can preserve a known-working installation, but it has more failure points than a real installer.
Make the copy
- Exit the storefront client and the game. Wait for disk activity to stop.
- Copy the entire game directory, including hidden files, subfolders and launcher components stored inside it.
- Copy local saves, configuration files, mods and profiles from their separate locations.
- Record the original storefront, installation path, game edition and any launch options.
- After copying, open several files from the destination and compare the folder size with the source to catch an interrupted transfer.
Restore the copy
- Install the required storefront client and any publisher launcher.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game and begin an installation to the intended drive so the client creates its expected folders.
- Pause or exit the client, then place the archived game directory in the location it expects.
- Use the client’s file-detection or verification function, if available, to check the files instead of assuming the copy is recognized.
- Install required runtimes, redistributables and launchers, then test the game before deleting the original archive.
Some clients store installation records outside the game directory. A copied folder can therefore appear complete but still trigger a full download, a verification pass or a new activation. Keep the original copy until the restored installation has launched successfully.
Back up saves and settings as a separate job
Game content and personal progress are different data sets. Include local saves, profiles, screenshots, key bindings, mods and configuration only after identifying where that particular game stores them.

- Use the game’s own export or backup command when one exists.
- Copy local save folders while the game and launcher are closed.
- If cloud saves are enabled, allow synchronization to finish, then retain a local copy as well.
- Keep mod lists and load order notes; a restored game may start without the same mod versions.
- Do not overwrite a newer save during testing. Restore to a separate profile or make a temporary copy first.
Choose storage that you control
A portable external hard drive is a practical place to hold installer sets and storefront backups. It is an inference from the need for local storage, not a requirement of GOG, Steam or Epic. Choose capacity from the measured size of your collection, then leave room for future updates and a second copy; no universal capacity is suitable for every library.
A resilient layout
- Primary archive: the complete installer or backup set on a drive used for normal access.
- Independent second copy: a separate drive or storage location, disconnected when not in use, for protection against drive failure or accidental deletion.
- Readable labels: include storefront, edition, DLC, operating-system notes and the date of the last update.
- Periodic checks: connect the archive occasionally, open a sample of files and confirm that the drive is still readable.
Do not keep both copies permanently connected to the same computer. A failed drive, malware incident or mistaken deletion can otherwise affect both at once. For very large libraries, prioritize games that are delisted, difficult to download or dependent on unusually old clients.
Restore planning: what you may still need
Before relying on an archive, write down the dependencies that are not contained in the files. Restoration may require:
- Access to the original storefront account and proof of entitlement.
- A publisher launcher or third-party installer.
- Product activation, DRM or an online first launch.
- Installation of game-specific runtimes, drivers or redistributables.
- A compatible operating system and graphics API.
- Local save files and configuration copied separately.
- Working servers for multiplayer or other online features.
These dependencies explain why an archive can preserve data without preserving the complete ability to play. Record them alongside the files rather than discovering them only after a storefront or server disappears.

Common failure modes and fixes
The archive is missing a file
Return to the storefront’s download list and compare every filename. For GOG, include companion data files and separate DLC installers. A missing part can make a multi-file installer unusable.

The storefront downloads the game again
The client may not recognize a copied directory because its installation metadata is elsewhere. Start a new installation to create the expected path, stop it, place the archived files there and run the client’s verification or detection step.
The game starts online but not offline
Confirm that the title supports offline play, complete first-run authentication while connected, and test again with the network disconnected. If the game depends on online services, an archive cannot recreate those services.
Progress is missing after restoration
Restore the separately saved profile or save directory. Cloud synchronization can be disabled, delayed or unavailable during offline testing, and installed game files do not necessarily contain user progress.

A new patch is unavailable
For GOG, wait for the offline installer generation process; post-launch update installers can take several hours to appear. For every storefront, retain the last complete set you downloaded and record its date.
Maintenance checklist
- Identify whether each archive is an installer set, storefront backup, installed-file copy or offline-play preparation.
- Keep base-game files, updates and DLC together and labeled.
- Back up saves and settings separately.
- Record account, launcher, DRM and offline-play dependencies.
- Maintain a second copy of irreplaceable archives.
- Test a restoration or offline launch before discarding the original installation.
- Recheck archives periodically and add important updates when they become available.
The practical rule is simple: retain the files you can legally download, keep them complete and readable, and assume that account access, authentication, servers and future compatibility remain separate risks.
