Yes—if you buy the Vienna Expansion as downloadable content, you need the base game, City Transport Simulator 2026, to use it. If you do not already own the simulator, buy the Vienna Edition instead. What the Vienna Expansion adds
The add-on is centered on a recreated Vienna setting rather than a small cosmetic update. ViewApp’s September 3, 2026 announcement says that more than 1,000 buildings were recreated for the expansion. The content also includes three real-world public-transport routes:
- Tram line 37
- Tram line 38
- Bus line 35A
Alongside those routes, the expansion includes Vienna-themed vehicles and related content. The official announcement describes it as adding the new Vienna map, all three real-world routes, and the associated vehicles and content to the existing game.

That wording matters: “expands your existing game” describes an add-on relationship. It is not presented as a separate simulator that launches independently of the base title.
Which product should you buy?
If you already own the simulator
Choose the Vienna Expansion. Your current copy of City Transport Simulator 2026 supplies the base game, while the expansion supplies the Vienna map, routes, vehicles and related content. You do not need to buy the Vienna Edition as well unless you are purchasing for a separate account or platform and that storefront’s licensing rules require a different package.
Before completing the transaction, check that the store account you are using owns the base game on the same platform. The official ownership explanation treats the Vienna Expansion as content for an existing game; it does not describe a second base-game license bundled into the DLC.

If you do not own the simulator
Choose the Vienna Edition. It combines the base game and the Vienna Expansion in one package, which means a new player can install the simulator and access the Vienna content without buying two separate products.

If you are buying for someone else
Use the same ownership test for the recipient. A recipient who already owns the simulator needs the Vienna Expansion. The required game license
The required license depends on your purchase:
- Vienna Expansion: ownership of City Transport Simulator 2026 is required.
- Vienna Edition: the package includes both the base game and the expansion.
The available evidence establishes the package relationship, but it does not establish a universal price, a permanent storefront lineup, or identical availability in every region. Those details can change, so use the current product page for the store and platform where you plan to play.
Input devices
ViewApp lists mouse and keyboard and an Xbox controller as input options. That makes a controller optional, not a prerequisite. You can use the input method supported by your platform and setup; purchasing an Xbox wireless controller is not necessary merely to access the Vienna map or its routes.

The Xbox listing identifies ViewApp as both developer and publisher and describes the Vienna Edition bundle. Store pages can present package names, edition labels and availability differently, however. Confirm that the listing is for the platform on which you own or will purchase the base game, and check whether the item is marked as an add-on or as a complete edition.

Buying only the expansion without the base game

Buying the bundle after already owning the base game
Symptom: The store shows the Vienna Edition even though your library already contains the simulator.
Fix: Compare the included products. If the Vienna Edition includes a base-game license you already have, the standalone Vienna Expansion is the cleaner purchase path, subject to the store’s current product rules.
Assuming a controller is required
Symptom: You delay the purchase because you do not own an Xbox controller.
Fix: The official listing names mouse and keyboard as an input option. A controller is optional.
Confusing route content with a separate route game
Symptom: You expect line 37, line 38 or bus line 35A to appear in a standalone Vienna application.

Relying on an old listing
Symptom: A search result shows a different edition name, release status or package description.
