Before you factory-reset an Oculus Quest or Meta Quest headset, use its Settings > System > Backup panel to request a Cloud Backup for important apps, then check that each backup is listed with a recent timestamp. Cloud Backup can preserve eligible app data, but it is not a complete copy of the headset and does not guarantee that every game save or setting will return.
Back up and verify app data before you reset
- Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and power. Let any app activity that may write progress finish before you request a backup.
- Open Settings > System > Backup on the headset. Meta’s documentation calls this the Cloud Backup panel. Confirm Cloud Backup is enabled; users can opt out in headset settings. Meta’s Cloud Backup documentation describes the feature and its settings.
- Request an on-demand backup for each app whose data matters. Meta supports manual backups from the Cloud Backup panel; do not rely only on the automatic schedule when a reset is imminent.
- Check that each app appears in Cloud Backups and review its timestamp and size. You can check status on the headset and view existing backups on the Meta Quest Cloud Backups webpage. If an app has no recent backup listed, assume its local data may be lost in a reset.
- For an app with multiple backups, choose carefully. The Cloud Backups webpage shows available backups and lets you select and request a particular one for restoration. Check the timestamp before choosing.
- Reset only after verification. The reset method—phone app, headset controls, or remote account settings—does not create a backup.
Automatic backups are not a substitute for this final check. Meta says they can run once per night when the headset is idle, charging, and on Wi-Fi; on app exit, up to once every six hours; and when a store-installed app is uninstalled. Those schedules do not establish that a particular app’s newest progress has been backed up. Details are in Meta’s Cloud Backup documentation.

What Cloud Backup restores—and what it may not
Cloud Backup is intended for device app data, including progress and settings for participating apps. It does not promise a full image of the headset. Whether an app’s data is included depends on its eligibility and how the app stores data. Meta’s developer guidance says the feature uses Android Auto Backup at the filesystem level; developers can configure or opt out of backup, and users can turn it off in device settings. - Supported app data only: Data stored in unsupported or custom locations, or excluded by an app developer, may not be backed up. A backup listing is useful evidence that a backup exists, not a guarantee that every kind of app data is covered.
- 100 MB per backup: Meta’s technical documentation sets a 100 MB limit for an individual backup; exceeding it can cause backup failure. Meta Horizon OS Developers.
- Software requirement: Cloud Backup requires Meta Horizon OS v35 or later. If the panel or feature is unavailable, check the headset’s software version and update if possible. Meta Horizon OS Developers.
- Not continuous multi-headset sync: Backups are maintained per app, device, and person. If a device has no backup for an app, it may restore the most recent backup from another headset you own; once both headsets have their own histories, those histories can diverge. - Legacy Cloud Saves are not a fallback: Meta shut down Cloud Storage V2 on January 31, 2025. Its FAQ says users who did not migrate by that deadline lost access to legacy Cloud Save data, which was later deleted. Meta’s Cloud Storage V2 deprecation FAQ.
After a reset, sign in with the Meta Account associated with the backup and reinstall the app. Meta says automatic restore runs when an app is installed. The backup listing and the selected restore determine what is available; do not assume every headset setting, downloaded file, or game save will return. Choose a reset route after the backup is confirmed

Meta’s official instructions for these routes are in its factory-reset help article. If the remote option is absent, the headset software may not support it. None of these routes protects app data on its own, so complete the Cloud Backup check first.

Meta’s documented recovery path for app data is Cloud Backup and restore, not a manual USB export. The cited guidance does not establish copying Quest app saves to an external drive as a supported backup method, so do not treat a cable, external drive, or microSD card as a replacement for verifying Cloud Backup.
