Tesla also specifies glass cleaner with microfiber for spot cleaning and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes for small stains. Its owner’s manual does not give a separate recipe for mineral or etched water spots, so treat this as routine care—not a guaranteed fix for deposits that remain.
Clean the panels without dragging grit across them
- Work on a cool exterior. Flush the panels with water first to remove dust, sand and other grit. Tesla cautions against rubbing grime across the surface during washing. Tesla Cybertruck Owner’s Manual: Cleaning.
- Wash with mild pH-neutral soap. Use water and a soft sponge, working gently. Do not assume any automotive wash product is suitable: Tesla warns that acidic, corrosive, highly alkaline or caustic products can damage or discolor exterior parts. Tesla Cybertruck Owner’s Manual: Exterior Care.
- Rinse before the soap dries. Use clean water to remove the soap completely.
- Dry with clean microfiber. Use towels free of sand, dirt and rocks. A grit-free automotive microfiber drying towel is useful; the key is cleanliness, not a particular brand. Tesla Cybertruck Owner’s Manual: Cleaning.
Choose the method by the mark
Fingerprints and ordinary smudges
For an isolated mark, Tesla’s instruction is: “For spot cleaning: Use a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth.” Wipe gently, with a clean cloth. Tesla also identifies IPA wipes as suitable for small stains. If a spot does not lift with these methods, stop rather than moving to an abrasive or improvised cleaner. Light water marks
Use the wash, rinse and thorough-drying routine above. Tesla’s reviewed owner-manual guidance does not provide a distinct method for removing mineral or etched water spots. If a mark remains after careful cleaning, do not assume that stronger acids, polishing compounds or abrasives are safe or effective.
Orange or brown specks that resemble rust
Tesla says some such spots are surface contamination from iron-containing debris picked up while driving, rather than the vehicle itself rusting. Its first step is IPA wipes. If they fail, Tesla describes a separate procedure using a mild citric-acid cleaner and a specific blue Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scour Pad. That is a conditional contamination treatment, not routine fingerprint cleaning. Follow Tesla’s full procedure—including its directions for gloves, application timing and rinsing—and do not substitute another pad. Scratches or stubborn discoloration
Cybertruck exterior body panels have no clear coat; a scratch is in the stainless steel itself. Do not try to remove it by sanding, polishing or scouring as part of routine cleaning. Tesla’s sanding directions are part of its repair procedure for specified repair conditions, not a consumer cleaning step. Why extra caution matters on stainless steel
Tesla says the exterior panels do not have a clear coat, and unsuitable cleaners can damage or discolor exterior parts. Avoid household acids, abrasive pads other than the exact pad in Tesla’s conditional procedure, steel wool, polishing compounds and improvised scratch-removal methods for routine cleaning. If a mark survives a gentle wash and the specified spot-cleaning options, identify whether it is a deposit, contamination, discoloration or a scratch before taking further action.
