Download and check a Google Takeout archive—or download individual items—before deleting anything. Keep the verified copy somewhere outside the Google Account you plan to clean. A Takeout export does not delete the originals, but it may take time to prepare and may not include changes made while it is being created.
Back up first, then delete
- Identify the account and files. Confirm which Google Account holds the Photos library and Drive files you want to preserve. Decide whether you need everything or only particular products or items.
- Create a Google Takeout export. Open Google Takeout, select Google Photos and Google Drive, and use the available product options to narrow what is included. Choose a delivery method. Google says archive creation may take from a few minutes to a few days; most people receive the download link the same day.
- Wait for the ready email and download the archive. Do not delete files just because you submitted the export request. Google warns that changes made between the request and archive creation may not be included, and data already being deleted is not included. Google also states that downloading your data does not delete it from its servers.
- Inspect the archive. Open it and check that expected folders and representative photos, videos, and Drive files are present and usable. Keep another copy in a separate location, such as an external hard drive, particularly for irreplaceable files.
- Delete only after checking your copy. Photos and Drive have different deletion and sync effects. Avoid emptying either Trash until you are certain you no longer need its contents.
Choose a Takeout delivery destination
Compare destinations by whether they are independent of the account being cleaned, have enough capacity, offer offline access, and allow you to check the resulting archive. Google does not rank these options.

| Destination | What to expect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Email download link | Google emails a link to the archive; you download and store it yourself. | A copy independent of Google Drive storage, provided you have somewhere to save the download. |
| Add to Google Drive | Google puts the archive in Drive and emails a link. The archive uses Google Account storage. | Convenience when the account has enough free space and is not the account you are trying to clear. |
| Dropbox | Takeout can deliver the archive to Dropbox. You need a Dropbox account and should check that the destination folder is private. | People who already use Dropbox and want the archive outside Google Drive. |
| Download, then copy to an external drive | Download the archive to your device and copy it to a local drive. Google does not recommend a particular drive model. | An offline copy; choose capacity based on the actual archive size and keep another copy if the files matter. |
Back up Google Photos
Download a few photos or videos
For a small selection, go to photos.google.com, select the photo or video, and choose Download. Google notes that your operating system may assign a new timestamp based on the download time; media metadata remains available in the file details.

Know what Photos deletion does
Items you delete generally stay in Google Photos Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Permanently deleted media cannot be restored. If Google Photos is installed on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad and backup is on, deleting a backed-up item in Photos can also remove it from that device. Deleting from Photos does not automatically remove the item from Drive, Gmail, Blogger, or YouTube. If your goal is only to remove a picture from the main gallery, consider Archive instead of deletion. See Google’s Photos deletion guidance.
Check backup status and computer-folder behavior
Google Photos shows backup status and size in an item’s details. Stopping backup for a computer folder stops future uploads; it does not remove photos already uploaded to Google Photos, which must be deleted separately if that is what you intend. Google’s help page says Google Drive for desktop support for Google Photos backup ended on August 10, 2026. Because that date has passed, check the current interface rather than relying on the former integration as a backup route. See Google’s current backup guidance.

Back up Google Drive
For a broad export, select Google Drive in Takeout. Wait for the archive, download it, and inspect the files you need before removing their cloud copies. Google’s Takeout instructions explain how to select products and create an export.
Understand Drive Trash and syncing
A Drive file moved to Trash stays there for 30 days unless you empty Trash sooner. Items in Trash still count toward storage. If you own a file, collaborators may retain access until it is permanently deleted. If you do not own it, other people may still have access even after you empty your own Trash. Google also warns that with Drive for desktop mirroring or streaming, moving an item to Trash can move it to Trash in both places. A file visible on a synced computer is not necessarily an independent backup. See what happens when you delete a Drive file and how to delete files in Drive.

Will deleting files free Google Account storage?
Google Account storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. When the account is full, new Drive uploads and file creation, Gmail sending or receiving, and Photos backups can be affected. Deleting a file from Drive or Photos may not free space immediately while it remains in Trash. Choosing “Add to Drive” for a Takeout archive also uses that shared storage, so it may be a poor choice when you are trying to make room. Google describes storage management options in its Drive, Gmail, and Photos storage guide.

Before you empty Trash
- Confirm the archive finished downloading; a submitted Takeout request is not a saved copy.
- Open the archive and verify the files you intended to keep.
- Store a second copy somewhere separate from the Google Account being cleaned.
- Check whether Photos deletion could remove items from a backed-up mobile device.
- Check Drive ownership and desktop sync behavior before assuming a local file will remain untouched.
- Remember that emptying Trash can make deletion permanent before the normal 30-day retention period ends.
