Start by identifying the exact console, game, region and online service. A save stored on the console, a platform cloud copy and progression held on a publisher’s servers are different data, with different backup rules. An account or game library remaining accessible after a shutdown does not prove that its progress can be exported.
Use the game publisher’s closure notice and save-data documentation to determine whether online progression is downloadable. Then make and verify the strongest copy your platform supports before the closure date. The procedures below are confirmed for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4; they should not be generalized to an unnamed game or another platform.

First determine where your progress actually lives
Before selecting a menu option, make a small inventory for every game you care about. Write down the title, edition, region, console model, user profile, Nintendo Account or PlayStation Network account and the service scheduled to close. Also note whether you are protecting a single-player save, downloadable content, unlocks, an online character, a competitive ranking or a subscription entitlement. These may not be stored together.

- Console save data: files stored on the Switch, Switch 2, PS4 or PS5. A platform backup feature can usually address this layer only when the game supports it.
- Platform cloud storage: a copy managed by Nintendo or PlayStation. It may require a paid membership, may exclude particular games and may disappear from your access when membership rules change.
- Publisher-hosted progression: an account, inventory, character or unlock record kept on the game company’s servers. A platform cloud backup may not contain it at all.
Ask the publisher specifically whether the closing service’s progression can be exported, transferred to another account, converted to an offline mode or retained through an archival process. If the closure announcement does not answer that question, do not assume that a console save or cloud save will preserve server-held data.

Separate an archive from a migration
A backup is useful only if it creates an independent copy that you can access after the service closes. A transfer that deletes the source file is a migration, not a backup. A cloud copy on a platform that you can no longer access may also fail the goal of an offline archive. For each method, record whether it makes a copy or moves the only copy, what account or subscription it needs, whether the specific game is eligible, where the resulting data resides and how it can be restored.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo’s current guidance supports Save Data Cloud for compatible software on both Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo says the vast majority of games support the feature, but not every game does. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required, and membership alone does not prove that a particular title has a completed cloud backup.
Check eligibility and back up from the game icon
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game whose save you want to protect.
- Open the software options menu and select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the relevant user.
- Select Back Up Save Data and wait for the completion message.
If the menu says that the software does not support Save Data Cloud, that title cannot use this route. Do not repeatedly retry the same command or treat the absence of an error as proof of a backup. Open the cloud-data screen later and confirm the game shows a current backup.
Back up through System Settings
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose progress you want to protect.
- Select the game.
- Choose Back Up Save Data and wait until the status confirms completion.
This route is useful when you are checking several games in one session. Repeat the check for each user and title; cloud eligibility and backup status are per game and per user.
Understand automatic backup
Nintendo says automatic backup is enabled for compatible software when a user becomes a Nintendo Switch Online member. Settings can be adjusted for individual games and users. Confirm that automatic backup is enabled where you want it, then perform a manual backup after the final play session before the shutdown. A membership receipt or an enabled setting is not evidence that the latest save has reached the cloud.

There is no supported local Switch save backup
Nintendo’s current FAQ states: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” That means you cannot create a general-purpose save archive on an SD card or USB drive through an officially supported local-save function. Do not buy external storage expecting it to solve the Switch save problem. For a compatible title, the platform cloud is the supported backup route; for an incompatible title, ask the publisher whether it provides a separate export or transfer tool.
What happens when Nintendo Switch Online expires
Nintendo’s current FAQ says that when a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you cannot access your Save Data Cloud backups. It also says Nintendo will allow a user who resubscribes within 180 days to access previous Save Data Cloud backups. The support page does not display a publication year; treat 180 days as current guidance accessed on October 13, 2026, not as a permanent guarantee. If you are planning around a service closure, keep the membership active until you have restored or otherwise secured the data you need, and do not rely on the 180-day window as your only archive.
Transfer to another Switch or Switch 2 only when you accept the risk
Nintendo offers nearby-console save-data transfer without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles must be online and near each other, and the same Nintendo Account must be linked to the relevant users on both systems.
- On the source console, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select the destination console and the user and game data.
Nintendo warns: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” The receiving console can also overwrite existing save data, and Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. Use this procedure as a move to a replacement or second console, not as your independent backup. If you need a duplicate, complete and verify an eligible Save Data Cloud backup first, then perform the transfer only after deciding which console should own the active file.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
PlayStation Plus cloud storage supports PS5 and PS4 saved data. PlayStation’s current storage guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data, up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data and a limit of 1,000 PS4 save files. The page does not show a publication year; these are current figures accessed in 2026 and can change.

Configure PS5 cloud synchronization
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- For PS5 games, select Sync Saved Data, then configure Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- For PS4 games, select the option for Auto-Upload.
You can manually upload or download saves for an individual title from the same saved-data area. Check the synchronization status after the upload completes and compare the title and timestamp with the save you intend to preserve. If more than one console or user is involved, verify that you are viewing the correct account before uploading; a cloud slot tied to another account will not protect the desired progress.
PS5 saved data is not a generic USB export
PlayStation’s storage table identifies PS5 saved data as cloud-storage-only. Do not tell readers that a generic USB stick can back up a PS5 save. USB extended storage for installing games is a separate feature and does not become a PS5 save-export function.
Copy PS4 saves to a USB drive from a PS5
PlayStation documents USB copying for PS4 saved data. The drive must be a commercially available USB device formatted as FAT or exFAT, and PlayStation warns that not every device works. This is a PS4-save procedure, not a method for exporting PS5 saves.
- Connect the compatible FAT- or exFAT-formatted USB drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Choose Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the game and the save files, then confirm the copy.
Afterward, safely remove the drive and keep it separate from the console. If the PS5 does not recognize the device, confirm its format and try a different compatible drive; PlayStation’s warning means that a drive meeting the stated format is not guaranteed to work. Do not format a drive containing other backups until you have checked what the format operation will erase.
Use both cloud and USB where the data allows
For a PS4 game, a PlayStation Plus upload and a USB copy provide different failure paths: one depends on account and cloud access, the other is a removable local archive. Make the USB copy after the final session and verify that the expected title and files appear on the drive. For a PS5 game, the cited official table provides cloud storage but no USB export, so focus on a current cloud upload and investigate whether the publisher offers a separate in-game export.

PC, Xbox and other platforms require game-specific verification
Do not apply the Switch or PlayStation instructions to a PC, Xbox, handheld or streaming device. A cloud-save toggle can synchronize files without giving you a readable local archive, and some games bind progression to an account or server rather than to a file you can copy.
For a PC game, check all of the following before the service closes:
- The game’s install directory and documented save-file location.
- The platform client’s cloud-save settings and the date of its last synchronization.
- The publisher’s support article for export, account transfer and offline play.
- Whether multiplayer progression, inventory, currency or unlocks are server-bound.
- Whether the saved files can be opened on another installation or are encrypted or account-bound.
- Whether the closure notice names a region, edition, mode or account type that is affected.
Official Steam and Xbox support pages did not provide readable content in the material reviewed for this guide, so no platform-specific save behavior is asserted here. Obtain current instructions for the exact game and platform before moving or deleting files. If the publisher has not documented an export, preserve any local files you can legitimately copy, but label them as unverified rather than promising that they will restore progression.
Compare every available route before choosing one
| Route | Independent copy? | Access requirement | Eligibility | Where the data lives | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch or Switch 2 Save Data Cloud | Creates a platform-cloud copy | Nintendo Switch Online and the same account | Most, but not all, games; check each title | Nintendo cloud storage | No supported local save backup; access rules apply when membership expires |
| Switch nearby-console transfer | No; moves the source file | Both consoles online and nearby; same Nintendo Account linked to users | Use the console’s transfer support | Destination console after transfer | Source data is deleted and destination data may be overwritten |
| PS5 or PS4 cloud storage | Creates a PlayStation cloud copy | PlayStation Plus and account access | PS5 and PS4 saves covered by the service | PlayStation cloud storage | Cloud access and capacity rules apply; it is not an offline archive |
| PS4 save copied from PS5 to USB | Yes, as a removable local copy | Compatible FAT or exFAT USB drive | PS4 saved data | USB drive | Not a PS5-save export; not every USB device works |
| Publisher server progression | Not established by a console backup | Publisher account and service availability | Game-specific | Publisher servers | May have no player-accessible export |
The strongest practical plan is the one that combines an independent local copy with a cloud copy when the platform and game permit both. If only a cloud route exists, verify it immediately and keep account access. If a method moves rather than copies, do not count it as your backup.

- Set a deadline earlier than the announced shutdown. Leave time for a failed upload, an incompatible drive or a support response. Do not schedule the only backup for the final hours.
- Finish the final play session. Save normally, exit the game cleanly and wait for any in-game synchronization indicator before starting the platform backup.
- Create the platform copy. Use the exact Nintendo or PlayStation procedure above, or the game’s documented export on another platform.
- Create a second form of copy where supported. For PS4 saves, this can be a USB copy in addition to PlayStation cloud storage. For Switch, a nearby-console transfer is not a second copy because it deletes the source.
- Verify the result. Reopen the cloud screen or USB contents, confirm the correct user and title, check the latest timestamp or status, and compare the number of files when the platform displays it.
- Test restoration without risking the original. Use a spare console, separate user or another documented non-destructive check when available. Never overwrite a known-good save merely to see whether a restore works.
- Preserve account access. Keep the correct Nintendo Account or PlayStation Network credentials, recovery methods and membership active until you have confirmed that the saved data is accessible. A file without the account required to use it may not solve the problem.
- Record what the copy does not contain. Note server-side characters, inventories, rankings, currencies or unlocks that the publisher has not promised to export. This prevents a platform save from creating false confidence.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The game has no Nintendo Save Data Cloud option
That message means the title is not eligible for Nintendo’s cloud route. Check the game’s official support page for an export or migration feature. Because Switch and Switch 2 do not support local save-data backups, there is no general SD-card or USB workaround supplied by Nintendo.

The Nintendo cloud status is old or incomplete
Check the selected user, confirm the console is online, run a manual backup and wait for completion. If the game supports automatic backup, review its per-game setting. Do not assume that simply holding a Nintendo Switch Online membership uploaded the latest session.
A Nintendo transfer warns about deletion or overwrite
Stop and reassess whether you are migrating or backing up. Nintendo’s warning means the source file will be deleted after sending, and overwritten destination data cannot be recovered. Make an eligible cloud backup first, or keep the source console untouched until you have decided which save is authoritative.
The PS5 cloud copy does not show the expected save
Confirm whether the game is a PS5 or PS4 version, then open the matching saved-data category. Check Auto-Sync Saved Data for PS5 or Auto-Upload for PS4, perform a manual upload and inspect the synchronization status. Verify the account and title before downloading anything, because restoring the wrong version can replace the current local state.
The USB drive is rejected on PS5
For PS4 saves, confirm that the drive is formatted as FAT or exFAT and that it is connected directly. PlayStation states that not all devices work, so try another compatible commercially available drive if the console still does not recognize it. Do not expect this process to expose PS5 saved data.
The platform backup exists but the online service still loses progress
A platform save may contain only local game state. Contact the publisher or consult its closure notice for server-held progression, account transfers and any final export period. If no export is documented, the loss may be outside the platform backup’s scope; do not represent a cloud or USB copy as proof that server data was preserved.
A final shutdown checklist
- Exact game, edition, region, console and user identified.
- Closure date, affected mode and affected region confirmed from the publisher.
- Local, platform-cloud and publisher-server data separated.
- Game-specific export or transfer documentation checked.
- Nintendo cloud compatibility confirmed, or PlayStation save type identified.
- Final save completed before upload or copy.
- Cloud status or USB contents independently verified.
- At least one copy kept separate when the platform allows it.
- Known-good source save protected from transfer overwrite.
- Account credentials and required membership retained until restoration is confirmed.
- Unexported server progression clearly recorded as unresolved.
Platform rules, capacities, eligibility and membership policies can change. Recheck the current official support page immediately before performing the final backup, especially if the closure is months away. The practical objective is not merely to copy a file; it is to know exactly what the copy contains, where it can be restored and which parts of your progress remain controlled by the closing service.
