You may be able to preserve a game save before its servers shut down—but there is no universal export button, and a platform backup does not necessarily include progress stored by the publisher. First find out where the game keeps your progress, then confirm cloud syncing is current, copy any accessible local save using the supported method, and check the game’s official shutdown notice for export or migration options.
Can I back up a save before the game servers shut down?
Sometimes. It depends on what the game treats as its authoritative save. Progress may be stored on your PC or console, synchronized to Steam or a console cloud service, held on the publisher’s servers, or split across those locations. A copy can preserve only the data it actually contains. If character progress, inventory, or world state exists only on the publisher’s servers, a local file or platform-cloud copy will not preserve it unless the publisher provides a way to export or migrate it.

Check the game’s documentation and the platform’s instructions for the exact title. Don’t assume that a platform’s cloud-save feature covers every game or every kind of progress: Nintendo says eligibility is game-specific, and Steam Cloud is configured per title. Nintendo’s eligibility guidance and Steamworks’ Steam Cloud documentation explain those limits.

- Split save: A local or platform save may exist alongside server-held account data. Treat those as separate until the game’s official documentation confirms what is included.
How to back up Steam game saves
Confirm Steam Cloud support and synchronization
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and check whether Steam Cloud is enabled or offered for that title.
- Let Steam finish synchronizing before you close or uninstall the game. If a sync conflict appears, review it carefully rather than choosing an option at random; Valve warns that a conflict can cause lost data or progress.
- If you played offline, reconnect and allow synchronization to complete. When Steam Cloud is disabled for a game, Valve says progress that would normally be saved through the cloud is stored only on the machine where it was made. See Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance.
Copy an accessible local save separately
- Look up the game’s save location in its developer documentation or support site. Valve notes that save locations for third-party games vary by developer; if documentation is unclear, check the game’s Steam Community forum or ask the developer. Steam Support explains how save locations and the Backup Feature differ.
- Copy the save folder to storage you control, keeping the original untouched. Label the copy with the game, date, and version if known.
- Keep a dated known-good copy. Do not overwrite your only backup with a different save version.
Steam’s Backup game files tool backs up qualifying game installation files; it is not a general save exporter. Valve says it excludes saves and other custom files for Valve-created games, and some third-party installer or downloader titles are incompatible. Check the game’s own restore instructions before trying to use a copied save: there is no universal restore procedure established for every game.
How to back up PlayStation game saves
The right method depends on whether the game was downloaded or streamed, and whether its save is for PS4 or PS5. Sony distinguishes these save types: streamed PlayStation Plus saves are stored on PlayStation, while saves for downloaded games are stored on the console. Moving saves between streamed and downloaded play uses PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Follow Sony’s current instructions in Save transfer between PS Plus streaming and downloaded games; menu names can change with system software.

PS5 saves and PS4 saves have different backup options
Sony’s PS5 storage guidance lists PS5 game saved data for cloud storage and PS4 game saved data for cloud storage or a USB drive. Cloud storage requires PlayStation Plus. On PS5, you can copy eligible PS4 saved data to a USB drive and copy it back using Sony’s documented steps. A USB drive is not a general export route for PS5 saves or publisher-server progress. Before copying, identify the game’s generation and save type. A console save copy does not establish that online account state, inventory, or other publisher-hosted progress is included.

How to back up Nintendo Switch saves
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and support is specific to each game. Before relying on it, check the title’s eShop Software Details, Nintendo Store product information, or Software Menu Options. Nintendo describes these checks in its Save Data Cloud support guidance.
Nintendo also says that saves for Switch software compatible with Switch 2 can be backed up and downloaded on either system. However, features added through Switch 2 updates or edition upgrades may not be available when that save is used on Switch. Check the game’s support information before expecting an identical experience across systems.

What if the save is held on the game’s servers?
If the publisher’s servers are authoritative for your progress, there may be nothing you can copy from the console or PC that preserves it. Only a publisher-supported export, account migration, offline mode, or continued service can preserve or make that server-held data usable. Check the shutdown notice for the exact game and act before its stated deadline; do not assume an account link or platform cloud save is a substitute.

Use this checklist before the shutdown date
- Write down the exact game, platform, edition, and announced shutdown date; open the official shutdown notice.
- Determine whether progress is local, platform-cloud, publisher-server, or split across them.
- Check cloud-save eligibility and sync status for the specific title.
- Copy accessible local saves using the platform’s or developer’s directions, and keep the original intact.
- Look for an official export, account migration, cross-save, or offline-play option. Test a restored copy only if the game supports that procedure.
- Be clear about what cannot be preserved: server-only progress needs publisher support to transfer or remain usable.
