To make a separate backup of Yandex Disk files, download them to a folder on your computer, then keep that copy somewhere distinct from the live sync folder—such as an external hard drive or portable SSD. Yandex Disk’s sync, Trash, and version history can help with some mistakes, but they are not substitutes for a separate copy.
Download your files to a separate local copy
Yandex documents two ways to download files: use its desktop application to save files and folders to a chosen computer folder, or download through the website. The desktop application is the documented route for downloading all files and for folders too large for the web method.

Use the website for smaller downloads
On Yandex’s help page, browser downloads of a folder are limited to fewer than 500 files and no more than 5 GB; an individual file download is limited to 5 GB. The page directs users to the desktop application for larger folders. Multiple files can be downloaded together as an archive, but folders must be downloaded one at a time. These are limits stated on Yandex’s help page and may change.

Understand why synchronization is not a backup
The Yandex Disk desktop sync folder synchronizes with the server when connected. On Windows, Yandex’s instructions let users choose which files are stored on the computer and which remain online-only. Removing a local synced copy does not remove the cloud copy, according to Yandex’s Windows help. Selective sync is useful for managing local storage, but a sync folder still reflects changes between the computer and cloud; it does not create a separate historical copy of everything.
Yandex cautions against using removable media as the live sync folder because the application needs permanent computer storage. Keep the active sync folder on the computer, and use a separate download or copied folder for backup instead.

Restore an earlier version of a file
Yandex’s personal file-history help page states that history is available for the last 90 days with an active Yandex 360 plan, or 14 days without one. The page is undated, and eligibility or plan details may change.

From the web interface, open the file’s history, choose the version you need, and either replace the current file or save the older version as a copy. Saving a copy preserves the current version while giving you a separate older file to inspect. Yandex says prior versions do not use Disk space on the cited page. For files in a shared folder, retention depends on the folder owner’s plan.

Recover a deleted file from Trash
Look in Trash if a file is missing. Yandex says items deleted through the computer’s Yandex Disk folder or mobile app are moved to server Trash. Select the item there and restore it. Yandex automatically clears Trash one month after items are moved there; its help page says files cannot be restored through Trash after that clearing.
A missing file may also have been moved to another folder, so check the Disk folders and file history as well. In shared folders, another member’s edits or deletions can affect the owner’s files.
