Back up EmuDeck controller settings by preserving the configuration files for the specific emulator you changed—and export any Steam Input layout separately. These are different settings layers: restoring one will not automatically restore the other. EmuDeck’s official SteamOS guidance points users to emulator-specific file locations rather than a single universal backup or restore tool.
Know which controller settings you need to preserve
Controller behavior can be controlled at more than one level. An emulator may store its own device mappings or controller profiles, while Steam Input applies a layout through Steam for a game or emulator. EmuDeck also offers a way to reset changed emulator settings to its defaults; that is not a way to recover your own custom mapping.

- Emulator configuration files: settings stored by the emulator. EmuDeck says the relevant emulator pages list configuration-file locations, which usually contain controller-layout files that can be backed up or shared. EmuDeck Controls 101.
- Emulator profiles: named configurations managed within an emulator, where that feature is supported. Availability and behavior vary by emulator.
- Steam Input layouts: Steam controller layouts, managed separately from emulator-side mappings.
- EmuDeck defaults: baseline settings available through Manage Emulators. Resetting to them can replace custom changes.
Back up emulator-specific controller settings
- Identify the emulator and configuration you changed. Do not assume every emulator stores controls in the same place.
- Find that emulator’s configuration path. Open its current page in the EmuDeck Controls 101 documentation and follow the emulator-specific location. Paths can depend on the emulator, installation, and packaging.
- Copy the relevant files to a separate location. Use the file manager, keep the filenames and folder structure intact, and store the copy somewhere outside the original configuration folder. An optional removable drive can hold a second copy; EmuDeck does not require one.
- Save a named profile if the emulator supports it. In Dolphin, for example, controller profiles can be saved globally or for a specific game. Dolphin’s EmuDeck documentation warns that global changes may be reset to EmuDeck defaults when EmuDeck is updated, so a profile is useful when you need to preserve a custom setup. See Dolphin on SteamOS.
There is no single documented archive format, sync service, or one-click custom restore procedure that applies to every EmuDeck emulator. Treat a file copy as a backup of the files you selected, not as a universal export.
Back up a Steam Input layout separately
- In Game Mode, open the controller layout screen for the relevant game or emulator.
- Select the Gear icon, choose Export Layout, then select New Personal Save. This saves a personal Steam Input layout, not an emulator’s internal controller profile. Follow EmuDeck’s Community Creations instructions.
- If you also want a file-level copy, use the Steam Controller Configs and template locations listed on that page. On SteamOS, the relevant folders may be hidden in the file manager; enable viewing hidden files if needed. Confirm the path matches your SteamOS user environment before changing files.
Restore the layer you actually changed
Restore copied emulator files
Before replacing anything, make a copy of the current configuration files so you can undo the change. Then restore your saved files to the matching emulator configuration location, keeping the expected names and folder structure. This is a file-management approach based on EmuDeck’s documented backupable configuration folders; the exact load behavior depends on the emulator. Consult that emulator’s current EmuDeck page for profile or default-selection steps.

Load an emulator profile
Where the emulator supports profiles, use its own controls to select or load the saved profile. The steps are not universal: Dolphin documents global and per-game profiles, while Cemu, Yuzu, and Ryujinx each describe their own profile or default-selection behavior. Use the page for the emulator you actually run rather than applying another emulator’s instructions. Relevant pages include Dolphin on SteamOS; EmuDeck also documents Cemu on SteamOS, Yuzu on SteamOS, and Ryujinx on SteamOS.
Export or reselect a Steam Input layout
In Game Mode, open the relevant game’s Controller screen and select the intended layout or personal save. EmuDeck’s FAQ describes Steam Input profile selection for supported emulators; the supported list can change, so check the current page. Selecting a Steam Input layout does not load an emulator’s internal profile.

Reset emulator settings to EmuDeck defaults
If your goal is to undo accidental changes rather than recover a custom setup, use the relevant reset controls on EmuDeck’s Manage Emulators page. This returns settings to EmuDeck defaults and may discard custom changes; it does not restore a personal backup. See Controls 101.

If the controls still do not behave as expected
- Check the emulator’s selected input device and profile, then separately check the game’s Steam Input layout.
- For an external controller, Steam Input can affect how the controller reaches the emulator. EmuDeck documents cases where disabling Steam Input may be needed for features such as gyro. The toggle is in the game’s Controller screen Gear menu; a restart may be needed for the change to take effect. Follow the device-specific External Controllers instructions.
- Do not assume a layout behaves identically across different controllers. Confirm that the selected layout and the emulator’s input configuration match the device you are using.
- Use SteamOS-specific paths only for the matching SteamOS environment. The documented
/home/deck/locations should not be treated as universal paths for Windows, macOS, other Linux distributions, or another Steam user account.
