The ESP32-S3 can communicate over USB, and a USB-C connector can carry its USB 2.0 data signals. But USB-C is the connector type, not a USB interface built into the chip. For a custom design, you need to route the ESP32-S3’s USB pins correctly, implement the connector’s Type-C configuration, and provide suitable power circuitry. On a development board, check the schematic and port labels: a USB-C port may connect to the chip’s native USB interface or to a separate USB-to-UART bridge.
What USB does the ESP32-S3 support?
Espressif documents two USB functions on the ESP32-S3: a full-speed USB On-The-Go (OTG) peripheral and a fixed-function USB Serial/JTAG controller. The chip’s USB data pins are GPIO20 (D+) and GPIO19 (D−). A USB-C receptacle can expose those signals, but the connector alone does not add USB capability.

“Full-speed” describes the documented USB interface; a USB-C connector does not make the connection USB 3.x. Nor does the connector by itself provide USB Power Delivery or negotiated higher-voltage power.
What hardware do you need for a custom USB-C connection?
- ESP32-S3 chip or module: Route GPIO20 to USB D+ and GPIO19 to USB D−, following the selected module’s design requirements. Espressif’s ESP32-S3 hardware design guidelines recommend reserving footprints for 22 Ω or 33 Ω series resistors near the chip. They also describe optional capacitor footprints on the data traces.
- USB-C receptacle: Choose a receptacle and wire its USB 2.0 data pins according to its pinout and a complete reference schematic. Because the connector is reversible, the duplicated USB 2.0 D+ and D− pins must be connected appropriately.
- Type-C CC termination: A USB-C device connection needs the correct configuration-channel (CC) termination so the host can detect the device. Espressif’s ESP32-S3 USB dongle article specifies a 5.1 kΩ pull-down for CC. For a receptacle, follow a full USB-C reference circuit for the correct CC1 and CC2 treatment rather than copying a partial connection.
- Power circuitry: Design the 5 V input and board power path for the module and its peripherals. The regulator, protection, and power-path components depend on the load and whether the board is self-powered. Do not assume a USB-C connector supplies negotiated power.
- Firmware and USB configuration: Match the firmware to the intended controller. Console, flashing, and JTAG debugging can use USB Serial/JTAG; USB-device or OTG applications need a compatible USB stack and an available PHY configuration.
Keep the data-line components close to the chip and follow the chosen module and connector reference designs for routing, power, and protection. The precise circuitry depends on the board; the connector pinout alone is not a complete design.

Native USB, USB Serial/JTAG, and USB-to-UART are different
USB Serial/JTAG
The ESP32-S3’s USB Serial/JTAG controller is implemented in hardware and has fixed functions: serial console, flashing, and JTAG debugging. It does not turn into an arbitrary USB device class. Espressif’s USB Serial/JTAG documentation describes these functions and their use with tools such as esptool and idf.py.
USB-OTG
USB-OTG supports broader USB device and host use cases, but it shares a PHY with USB Serial/JTAG. Espressif’s USB device guidance says the two controllers cannot use the same PHY simultaneously. The internal PHY is assigned to Serial/JTAG by default; OTG operation therefore needs an external PHY in that configuration, or the internal PHY can be reassigned using the USB_PHY_SEL eFuse. Espressif’s USB Serial/JTAG and DFU guidance covers this PHY selection.

- ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
- Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
- The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
- ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
USB-to-UART bridge
Some boards route their USB connector to a separate USB-to-UART bridge, which converts USB signals to UART for the ESP32-S3. That path is not the chip’s native USB interface. A board may offer both kinds of port: Espressif’s ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 documentation distinguishes the chip’s USB port from its USB-to-UART bridge port.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Port route | Confirm whether the connector goes to native USB pins or a USB-to-UART bridge. |
| Exposed function | Check whether the port supports the Serial/JTAG functions you need or the USB-OTG mode your firmware requires. |
| Connector and schematic | Do not infer a port’s function from its USB-C shape. Verify the board’s labels and schematic. |
| PHY availability | USB-OTG and USB Serial/JTAG share the internal PHY, so the selected controller and PHY configuration must match the intended use. |
| Custom-board details | Account for CC termination, reversible USB 2.0 data wiring, data-line layout, and board power design. |
If you only need programming and serial debugging, a board with a USB-C port connected to USB Serial/JTAG or a USB-to-UART bridge may be sufficient. If you need a USB device or host application, check that the board and firmware expose a compatible OTG configuration. For a custom product, use the relevant Espressif and USB-C reference circuits rather than treating the receptacle as a plug-in addition.
