The safest way to back up or restore a Minecraft world depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock, what device you use, and whether the world is local or on a Realm. First make a separate copy using the instructions for that exact platform. Downloading a Realm world creates a local copy; restoring a saved version rolls the Realm back and can remove later progress.
Choose the right backup or restore route
Before changing or replacing a world, identify its edition, device, and storage type. Minecraft’s Help Center lists distinct local-backup guidance for Java Edition and for Bedrock on Windows, Android, and iPhone or iPad. It also lists device-specific recovery and console cloud-save guidance. A file path or procedure for one edition or device should not be assumed to work for another.
- Local standalone world: Use the official backup guidance for your edition and device. Make a separate copy before attempting a restore or other destructive change.
- Realm world: Download a copy for offline use or archival purposes. If you want to roll the Realm back, use its saved versions and check the selected save before confirming.
- Moving a Bedrock world to another device: Minecraft’s Realms transfer procedure requires an active Realms trial or paid subscription and current game versions on both devices.
For a local world, open the Help Center and choose the matching guide for your platform, such as “Back Up and Restore Your Minecraft Worlds” for Java or the relevant Bedrock-device article. The exact local file paths and restore clicks are platform-specific; do not substitute instructions for another device.
Download a copy of a Realm world
A download gives you a local world copy. It is different from restoring a save to the Realm: the download is added to your local worlds, while a restore changes the Realm to an earlier saved state.

Restore a Bedrock Realm save
Restoring a Realm save is a rollback, not a second copy. Minecraft says the Realm reverts to the selected save, including its builds and items, so progress made after that save will not be part of the restored state.
- Launch Minecraft and choose Play, then the Realms tab.
- Open the relevant Realm Hub and select the World tab.
- Open the saves management control. Select Manual or Automatic, depending on the save you want.
- Open the three-dot menu beside that save and choose Restore save.
- Check that you have selected the intended saved version before confirming.
Interface wording can vary by game version. Follow Minecraft’s Bedrock Realm restore instructions if your menus differ.

Transfer a Bedrock world to another device
Minecraft’s Realms transfer method uses a Realm as the handoff between devices. It requires an active Realms trial or paid subscription, and Minecraft must be up to date on both the device with the world and the destination device.
- On the device that has the world, upload it to an empty Realm slot or replace a slot as appropriate.
- Sign in to Minecraft on the destination device using the relevant account, and update the game if needed.
- Open the Realm slot containing the uploaded world and download it.
- Find the local copy in your worlds list; Minecraft appends – Copy to its name.
See Minecraft’s Bedrock world-transfer instructions for the documented procedure.

Protect the copy before replacing or restoring
Keep a downloaded or locally backed-up copy separate from the world you plan to change. That gives you a way back if you choose the wrong save or replace the wrong Realm world. Minecraft recommends downloading a Realm world before replacing it and warns that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely; they should not be treated as permanent archival storage. See Minecraft’s guidance on changing a Realm world.
If the world files are accessible and copyable on your platform, an external drive can be an optional second location for a separate copy. This is not a universal option: consoles and mobile devices do not all expose world files for direct copying. Check your device’s official instructions before relying on external storage.

If you cannot find or restore the world
- You are unsure which backup guide applies: Check whether the game is Java or Bedrock, then match the device—Windows, Android, iPhone or iPad, or console—to the relevant Minecraft Help instructions.
- A local world is missing: Use the official guide for locating or recovering worlds on that edition and device. Minecraft’s Help Center includes a Java backup-world discovery article and Apple-device recovery guidance; do not try another platform’s folder path.
- A Realm save is not the version you expected: Review the available manual and automatic saves before restoring. Do not confirm until you have selected the intended snapshot.
- You are replacing a Realm world: Download a copy first. A replacement can lose progress, and Realm backups are not indefinite storage.
Minecraft’s support titles include “Find Your Minecraft: Java Edition Backup World”, “Save a Backup,” and “Restore a Backup Save.” Use the Help Center to locate the current article for your exact platform and interface.
