Buy a raw (ungraded) card if you are comfortable judging its condition from the evidence, want to handle it, or would rather not pay for a slab. Neither format guarantees a fair price or a profit: compare recent sold listings for the exact card before deciding.
Graded vs. raw: what you are buying
Authentication and grading are separate steps. Authentication assesses whether a card is genuine; grading assesses its condition. PSA says it authenticates a card before grading it. A graded card is typically returned in a hard-plastic holder, or slab, with a label showing the grader’s assessment. PSA describes its holder as tamper-evident and designed to protect against pressure and most damage. A slab adds standardized information and protection, but it does not make the seller’s asking price fair.

A raw card has no third-party grade in a slab. Its condition may be described by the seller, but that description is not a promised numeric grade. You can handle the card if buying in person, while an online purchase depends more heavily on photographs, seller evidence, and any authentication safeguards that apply.
Which should you buy?
| Your priority | Lean toward | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| A third-party condition label and an encapsulated card | Graded | Grading company, grade, certification details, slab condition, and sold prices for the same card at that grade. |
| A lower all-in price or the ability to inspect and handle the card | Raw | Clear photos, condition details, seller evidence, and any applicable authenticity protection. Do not treat a seller’s condition description as a numeric grade. |
| You already own the card and are considering grading it | Compare first | Estimate its likely grade conservatively, then compare relevant raw and graded sold prices against grading, shipping, insurance, and time costs. |
These are decision considerations, not market laws. There is no universal premium for graded cards, and a raw card’s eventual grade or resale value cannot be inferred from a listing description alone.

How to inspect a graded card
- Review clear images of both the front and back, not only the label.
- Check the grade label and certification information. PSA provides tools for checking its certification records.
- Look over the slab for cracks, damage, or signs of tampering. A tamper-evident holder is a safeguard, not a substitute for checking the actual item.
- Compare recent sold prices for the exact card in the same grade. Match year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, and parallel; a similar-looking card may not be a useful comparison.
- If the listing displays an authentication-program badge, read the current program scope and confirm that the listing itself qualifies.
How to inspect a raw card
Ask for sharp, well-lit photographs of the front and back. If the seller cannot provide enough detail to assess a concern that matters to you, price the uncertainty into your decision or pass.
- Corners and edges: Look for whitening, bends, chips, fraying, or wear.
- Surface: Check for scratches, print defects, stains, creases, and other marks. Angled light can make some surface issues easier to see.
- Centering: Compare the borders around the image, while remembering that centering is only one part of condition.
- Folds and damage: Inspect for creases, dents, wrinkles, or evidence of prior alteration.
PSA’s grading standards say “the other component of grading is somewhat subjective”; its explanation notes that eye appeal can require a grader’s judgment. Photographs can help you assess visible condition, but they cannot promise an exact future grade.

Compare the exact card’s sold prices
Search completed or sold listings, not just active asking prices. Match identifying details as closely as possible: year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, and parallel. For a graded card, compare the same grade and, where practical, the same grading company. For a raw card, compare raw examples whose visible condition is reasonably similar.

PSA recommends looking at sales from the preceding three to six months in the estimated grade as an input to declared value. That can help frame a comparison, but it is not a promise of future resale value. For a card you own, estimate conservatively and account for the full cost and delay of submission rather than assuming the best-case grade.

What grading costs and how long it can take
As displayed by PSA on October 4, 2026, its Standard service was listed at $59.99 per card, with a $1,000 maximum insured value and an estimated turnaround of 90–100 business days. These are PSA-specific figures, not universal grading rates. PSA says turnaround estimates are not guaranteed, begin when an order enters its system, and can change with volume and capacity. Other service tiers have different fees, insured-value limits, and estimated times; check the current PSA service page before submitting.
Submission cost is only part of the trade-off: allow for shipping and insurance as well as the time the card is away. Grading is most useful when its authentication, assessment, protection, or marketability matters enough to justify those costs for this particular card. No grade guarantees a return or a particular resale price.

What eBay authentication does—and does not—cover
eBay’s safeguards apply only to eligible listings and are subject to listing and geographic requirements. Its Authenticity Guarantee information says eligible single cards priced at $200 or more may qualify, subject to those conditions. For raw cards, the process authenticates the card; for graded cards, it inspects the case and label. It does not regrade a card that is already graded.
eBay also describes a PSA grading option attached to some eligible purchases, with limited availability and US buyer and shipping constraints for the service described on its trading card service help page. Do not assume either program applies because a card is listed on eBay; check the actual listing and the current eligibility terms.

Should you grade a card you already own?
- Identify it precisely. Record the year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, and any parallel or variation.
- Assess condition conservatively. Examine corners, edges, surface, centering, folds, and damage. Do not assume a photo-based estimate will match a grader’s result.
- Check relevant sold listings. Compare raw examples and graded examples around the grade you realistically think the card may receive.
- Calculate the complete trade-off. Include the selected grading tier, shipping, insurance, and the time involved. Use the service’s current terms rather than an old fee or estimate.
- Submit only if the result serves your purpose. A slab may matter to you for authentication, protection, display, or resale; if those benefits do not justify the cost and wait, keeping the card raw may make more sense.
Protecting a raw card
A penny sleeve and semi-rigid card holder can help protect and hold a raw card, including during grading preparation. PSA recommends using both before submission, and eBay says eligible raw cards remain in a penny sleeve during its authentication process. These supplies help protect the card; they do not improve its grade or guarantee an outcome.
