Use a password-protected binary .backup to restore a RouterOS configuration to the same router; use a readable .rsc export when you need to inspect or selectively transfer commands. Save and retrieve a copy before changing the router, protect it as sensitive data, and do not treat a saved file—or an import dry run—as proof that recovery will work.
Choose the right backup format
| Format | Best suited to | What it contains and how it behaves | Compatibility and handling |
|---|---|---|---|
Binary .backup |
Restoring configuration to the same router | A binary clone of configuration that also stores the device MAC addresses. It is not readable as a configuration script. | MikroTik recommends restoring on the same RouterOS version. Treat the file as sensitive and encrypt it with a password. |
Text .rsc export |
Reviewing, editing, or selectively moving configuration | A readable script of user-edited configuration; unchanged defaults are normally omitted. It is not a complete dump of device state. | MikroTik recommends matching RouterOS versions when importing. Sensitive values depend on export options, and several important data types are excluded. |
MikroTik describes the binary method as “the way to completely clone router configuration in binary format.” The vendor’s RouterOS backup documentation says to use it for the same device, while its configuration management documentation explains the uses and limits of text export.

Create and retrieve a binary backup
-
In a RouterOS terminal, run
/system backup save name=before-change password="<strong-password>". Replace the example password with a strong secret; do not reuse a password that is easy to guess.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check that RouterOS created the file by running
/file print. Confirm the expectedbefore-change.backupentry is present.#1 Best Overall

- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
-
Download a copy through WinBox or FTP and store it somewhere you can access if the router becomes unavailable. Keep the password separately from the backup file.
On RouterOS v6.43 and later, a backup created without a supplied password is unencrypted. Do not assume a passwordless file is protected. MikroTik documents aes-sha256 as the default encryption and describes RC4 as insecure and retained only for compatibility; avoid RC4.
A binary backup contains MAC addresses as well as configuration. Protect it like a credential-bearing device file, restrict who can access it, and avoid leaving the only copy on the router you may need to recover.
Restore a binary backup to the same router
-
Before loading the file, confirm you are restoring it to the intended router and that the router is running the same RouterOS version used to create the backup, as MikroTik recommends.

Make the backup file available to RouterOS, for example by uploading it through WinBox or FTP.
-
Run
/system backup load name=before-change.backup, using the actual filename. RouterOS requests the password when applicable and prompts to restore and reboot. -
Allow the router to reboot, then verify that the device is reachable and its configuration and essential services are operating as expected.

Loading a backup applies its configuration and reboots the router. It is a consequential recovery operation, not a way to inspect or merge individual settings.
Export and import a readable configuration
Export the configuration
From the RouterOS root prompt, run /export file=before-change to create a readable .rsc file. You can also export from a particular menu to include only that portion of configuration. By default, export outputs user-edited settings and omits unchanged defaults.
RouterOS controls whether sensitive values are revealed in export output; the show-sensitive option changes that behavior. If you use it, treat the resulting script as confidential and secure it accordingly.
Check export omissions before relying on it
A text export is not a complete backup of device state. MikroTik documents that exports omit:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- System user passwords
- Installed certificates
- SSH keys
- The Dude data
- A User Manager database
Certificates, The Dude data, and User Manager data require their own export and import mechanisms. System user passwords and user SSH keys cannot be exported. A migration plan that depends on any of these must account for them separately; copying the .rsc file alone will not recreate them.

Test syntax, then import deliberately
RouterOS documentation describes verbose=yes dry-run as an import option for simulating a script and catching syntax errors without making configuration changes. For example, from the prompt use /import file-name=before-change.rsc verbose=yes dry-run. The exact command form and dry-run behavior should be checked against the RouterOS version in use; MikroTik’s scripting documentation describes this behavior in its RouterOS 7.16.x context.
A dry run is only a syntax check. It does not establish that the configuration will restore correctly in production, that referenced interfaces and other dependencies exist, or that connectivity will remain available. Once you have reviewed the script and confirmed the target and version, import it with /import before-change.rsc. MikroTik recommends matching RouterOS versions to avoid commands that are unavailable in one version.
Choose a place to keep the retrieved copy
WinBox or FTP download
Downloading the file to another trusted location is the straightforward local-copy route documented for binary backups. Confirm the download completed and keep the file and its password protected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOptional USB storage
A USB flash drive can provide a local copy when the router supports it. RouterOS documentation shows an attached USB flash disk and describes filesystem handling, but support depends on the router and compatible filesystem. Check the device documentation and supported filesystem before buying or relying on a drive; USB is optional, not a requirement.

Optional MikroTik Cloud backup
MikroTik’s current RouterOS Cloud documentation describes one free backup slot per device and a 15 MB allowed backup size. The service can upload an encrypted backup and download and apply it while the router can reach the MikroTik Cloud server. A secret download key can be used to retrieve the backup from another device or location; keep that key secret and use a strong password. These are documented service limits and features, not an independent guarantee of uptime or durability.
Reset only after confirming recovery material
RouterOS configuration reset clears configuration and reboots the router. The reset documentation describes an automatic backup before reset unless the skip-backup parameter is used, and also documents no-defaults for controlling the reset state. Do not casually skip the automatic backup. Before resetting, confirm that you have a separate, retrievable recovery copy and understand whether the target should have default settings or no defaults.
A backup is not a tested recovery
A file appearing in /file print confirms that RouterOS created a file; it does not prove you can retrieve, decrypt, load, or operate from it. Likewise, a successful export or dry-run does not verify a full restoration. Keep copies off the router, retain the appropriate password, and plan a controlled recovery check appropriate to the device and network before relying on the backup for an outage.
