The safest DayZ server backup starts with the persistence data in the active mission: usually mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/. That folder contains the world state players care about—camps, bases, vehicles and dropped items. Stop the server before copying or restoring it, retain several dated versions, and include serverDZ.cfg, keys/, mods and the mission folder so a recovery also reproduces the server configuration.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted DayZ servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
DayZ folder names vary with the mission and the configured instanceId. The locations described below are based on community and hosting documentation rather than a current Bohemia Interactive backup manual, so confirm the active path on your own installation before deleting or replacing anything.

A useful backup has two layers: the persistence files that define the live world and the files needed to start that world with the same settings and content.
| Item | Typical location | Why it matters | Evidence and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active persistence | mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/ |
Stores camps, bases, vehicles and world items. The active binary files are normally under storage_1/data/. |
Hosting guidance rates this as critical. The slot can instead be named storage_<instanceId> on some configurations. |
| Failsaves | storage_1/data/ |
Two files identified as failsaves, 001 and 002, may be available for recovery. |
Keep them with the data directory; do not assume they are interchangeable with a dated external backup. |
| Automatic storage backups | storage_1/backup/ |
May contain storage snapshots created automatically or manually. | The existence and exact behavior depend on the server build and configuration. |
| Server configuration | Server root, commonly beside mpmissions/ |
serverDZ.cfg defines the server settings that should accompany a world save. |
Confirm the actual root by locating this file beside the mission and keys directories. |
| Mission files | mpmissions/ |
Provides the mission template and the path in which persistence is stored. | Back up the complete mission directory, including custom files. |
| Keys | keys/ |
Contains the key files used to validate installed mods. | Missing or mismatched keys can prevent a modded server from starting correctly. |
| Mod folders | Server root, often folders named with an @ prefix |
Preserves the exact server-side content required by the saved world. | Copy every installed server mod, not only the one most recently changed. |
One community answer recommends copying the entire server directory. That is the least ambiguous option when storage, mission, configuration, keys and mods are all in the same root. If disk space or transfer time makes a full copy impractical, never omit the active persistence directory, configuration, keys and mission files.

Find the active persistence path before touching files
Do not assume that a folder named storage_1 is the world your server is currently using. The mission name and instanceId can change the path, and a changed instance identifier can make DayZ start a fresh world while leaving the old slot on disk.
- Locate the server root. Find
serverDZ.cfgand confirm thatmpmissions/,keys/and any server mod folders are alongside it. - List the mission directories. Inside
mpmissions/, identify the mission selected by your launch configuration. If several missions exist, record the one used by the running instance. - Inspect the persistence names. Look inside that mission for
storage_1and anystorage_<instanceId>directories. The active name is determined by your server configuration and build. - Check for live files. A normal persistence directory should contain a
data/subdirectory with storage files and may contain abackup/subdirectory. Record the modification times while the server is running, then recheck after a controlled restart if you need to identify the slot with certainty. - Write down the path. Put the complete path in your backup notes. This prevents restoring a valid backup into an unused mission or instance slot.
Another hosting guide describes a layout containing missions/db/, profiles/, storage_x/, players.db and vehicles.db. That structure conflicts with the .bin-based layout described elsewhere, so treat it as a possible provider-specific arrangement rather than a universal DayZ path. If your installation uses database files instead, back up the database directories your provider identifies as active and do not delete files based only on the layout in this article.

Back up a DayZ server: the safe procedure
1. Plan a maintenance window
Tell players when the server will be unavailable and choose a time with little activity. A clean shutdown prevents the server from writing a persistence file while it is being copied. Community advice discusses live copying, but no official guidance establishing a universally safe live-copy method was located; stopping the process is the safer default.
2. Stop the server completely
Use your host control panel’s stop action or the same service mechanism used to start the server. Wait until the process has exited and file timestamps stop changing. Do not treat a closed console window as proof if a service manager, scheduled task or wrapper can restart the process.
3. Copy the persistence folder first
Copy the complete active storage_1 (or storage_<instanceId>) directory, including data/, its binary files, the two failsaves if present, and the backup/ directory. Preserve the directory tree and file names. A backup that contains only a few selected binaries is harder to audit and may omit the slot’s recovery material.
4. Copy the files that make the world reproducible
Copy serverDZ.cfg, the complete active mission directory, keys/ and every server mod folder. If you have enough storage, copy the whole server root instead. This captures custom configuration, scripts and mod versions that a persistence-only copy cannot restore.
5. Verify the copy before restarting
- Open the destination and confirm that the expected mission and storage directories exist.
- Compare file counts and total sizes with the source.
- Check that the active
.binfiles are not 0 KB. A forum report associates zero-length storage files with a crash; it is a warning sign, not proof that every nonzero file is healthy. - Record the backup date, the mission name, the instance identifier and the server build or mod set in a text note beside the backup.
- Keep the backup on storage separate from the live server when possible. A second disk or host protects against a failed server volume.
6. Restart and observe
Start the server, watch the log and join with an administrator account. Confirm that a known base, vehicle or world item is present. If the server starts with a new-looking world, stop it rather than allowing more changes; a wrong mission or instance path is more likely than an instantly destroyed backup.
Copying while the server is running
A live copy can capture different files at different moments. If the server writes a binary during the transfer, the destination may contain a mixture that never existed as a consistent save. A community forum user prefers Robocopy to xcopy because Robocopy can retry a file when the server is still writing it. That recommendation is practical advice, not an official guarantee.
If downtime is impossible, use a copy tool with bounded retries, copy to a new dated directory rather than overwriting the last known-good backup, and verify file sizes after the copy. Take a clean, stopped-server backup as soon as a maintenance window becomes available. Never delete the previous good snapshot merely because a live copy completed without an error message.
Restore a DayZ backup
Restoration changes the live world. Test the procedure on a copy of the server first whenever you can, and keep the current data untouched until the older snapshot has been verified.

1. Select and identify the snapshot
Choose a dated backup whose mission, instance identifier and mod set match the world you intend to recover. If the note does not identify those values, inspect the backup’s folder tree and configuration before proceeding. Do not assume the newest directory is the best one; it may have been made after corruption began.
2. Stop the server and preserve the current state
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Make a separate copy of the current active storage directory. Label it with the date and the reason for the restore. This gives you a way back if the selected snapshot is incomplete.
- Confirm that no automated restart has started the server again.
3. Match the destination path
Use the active mission and instance path you recorded earlier. A restore into an unused storage_1 directory will appear to fail because DayZ will continue loading a different slot. If instanceId was changed since the backup, decide deliberately whether to restore the old identifier or copy the files into the currently configured slot; changing the identifier can otherwise create a fresh world and leave the old data behind.
4. Replace the active data files
Inside the destination storage directory, clear the contents of its data/ folder after the safety copy has been made. Replace the active .bin files with the corresponding files from the chosen backup. Preserve the data/ directory itself and its expected permissions. The community method specifically describes clearing the data folder and replacing its binary files; it is not official Bohemia Interactive guidance, so follow your hosting provider’s procedure if it documents a different storage format.
Do not remove unrelated mission files, configuration, keys or mod content while performing a persistence restore. Those files are restored separately only when you intend to roll back the complete server environment.
5. Check ownership, permissions and free space
The account that runs the DayZ service must be able to read the restored files and write new persistence data. Confirm that the destination volume has enough free space and that copying from another machine did not make the files read-only. Permission failures can look like a fresh-world reset because the server cannot load or save the expected data.

6. Start once and validate
Start the server and monitor its log for storage or mission errors. Join with an administrator account and check several independent indicators: a known base, a vehicle, a camp container and a previously dropped world item. If all are missing, stop the server before players create new data. Recheck the mission name, instance identifier and exact storage path, then compare the restored files with the backup.
Configuration settings that can affect recovery
instanceId
The persistence slot may be named from the configured instance identifier. A changed value can cause DayZ to use a new directory while the former world remains on disk. Back up before changing it, record the old and new values, and expect a fresh world if no data is copied into the new slot.
storageAutoFix
One reference describes storageAutoFix=1 as a startup check that replaces corrupted persistence files with empty files. Verify that this setting behaves that way on your build. An automatic replacement may let the server start, but it can also remove the very data you hoped to recover. Preserve the original files and investigate a suspected corruption before repeatedly starting the server with automatic repair enabled.

There is no published statistic establishing a universal DayZ backup interval. The following schedule reflects community and hosting recommendations and should be adjusted to the amount of change your server can tolerate losing.
| Server pattern | Persistence snapshot | Mission and configuration copy | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, mostly vanilla server | Daily | Weekly | At least three dated versions |
| Mid-size modded server | More often than daily, based on activity | Weekly and after significant mod or configuration changes | At least three versions, with older copies retained if storage permits |
| Busy server | Before each planned restart is suggested by community guidance | Before major maintenance and after changes | Keep multiple pre-change and post-change snapshots |
Use dates and times in backup directory names, and avoid overwriting a previous snapshot. A simple retention rule is more valuable than a large pile of indistinguishable folders: keep the latest few copies, one from before the last major change, and one known-good copy that has passed a restore test.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
The server loads a completely new world
- Check that the mission directory is the one selected at launch.
- Compare
storage_1with anystorage_<instanceId>directory and verify the configured identifier. - Confirm that the restored files are inside the active directory’s
data/folder, not one level above or in an unused backup folder. - Stop the server before investigating further so a new empty world does not overwrite useful evidence.
Storage files are 0 KB
Zero-length files are commonly reported after a crash. Keep the affected directory, stop the server and restore the most recent nonzero snapshot. Do not rely on an automatic fix to recreate player progress; an empty replacement is not a recovered world.
The server starts but bases or vehicles are missing
Check more than one entity and confirm that you restored all of the active binaries. Then verify the mission and instance path. If only modded objects are absent, compare the restored server’s mod folders and keys with the versions used when the snapshot was created.

Review file permissions, free space, mod keys and configuration syntax. A complete-root restore can reintroduce an old setting or mod combination, so isolate the persistence restore from the configuration rollback when diagnosing the failure.
How to test a backup without risking the live server
- Make a working copy of the server directory and give it a distinct configuration and port so it cannot compete with the production instance.
- Restore the snapshot into the copied server’s matching mission and storage path.
- Start the test instance with the same mod and key set, if the test is intended to validate a modded world.
- Join locally or with an administrator account and verify several known entities and the ability to save a harmless change.
- Stop the test instance and confirm that the copied storage files changed normally. Keep the dated production snapshot untouched.
A restore test proves that the files can be read in a compatible environment; it does not prove that every future DayZ update will preserve compatibility. Repeat the test after major game, mission or mod changes.
Important limits and source conflicts
As of October 14, 2026, no official Bohemia Interactive page describing DayZ server persistence backup and restoration was located. Community forums, hosting guides and third-party wiki material disagree about folder layouts, especially the .bin-based storage_1/data/ arrangement versus database-oriented paths. Treat the exact path on your server as a fact to verify, not a value to copy blindly from another host.
The practical rule remains consistent across the available guidance: identify the active persistence slot, stop the server for a clean copy, preserve the complete configuration and content needed to run it, retain several dated snapshots, and test a restore on a disposable copy before an emergency makes experimentation costly.
