That distinction matters: ORBIT is not the same application as OrbitPS2 Manager, which manages Open PS2 Loader (OPL) game libraries. The safe way to preserve saves depends on where the memory card data actually lives—on a physical PS2 card, in an OPL virtual memory card image, or in a PCSX2 card image or folder.
What ORBIT does—and what it does not document
The ORBIT launcher announcement describes reading the newest save for each game to display a 3D icon. It does not document a way to export, back up, or organize save files. See the ORBIT launcher announcement for the stated feature. Because the available announcement is not a full manual, check ORBIT’s current documentation or release notes for any newer backup or export support before looking for ORBIT-specific steps.

Do not confuse ORBIT with OrbitPS2 Manager. That is a separate desktop application for managing an OPL game library. Its project page documents virtual memory-card (VMC) creation, listing, deletion, and assignment; it does not establish that the ORBIT launcher can back up saves or that the manager edits individual saves inside a VMC.
Identify where your PS2 saves are stored
Before copying anything, identify the storage format used by the system that runs the game. A physical memory card, a virtual card image, and an emulator folder card are not interchangeable just because they contain PS2 saves.

| Storage type | Where the data lives | What to back up | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical PS2 memory card | On the card used with a real console | A separate copy made through an applicable, supported workflow | The card stores saves, but is not itself a backup. The sources do not specify a particular copying method. |
| OPL virtual memory card (VMC) | As a card-image file in OPL’s VMC directory | The relevant VMC image file | OPL per-game settings can include VMC configuration. The OPL guide describes filenames based on a game ID; preserve the image and the context needed to identify its assignment. |
| PCSX2 memory-card image | As a memory-card image file on the host filesystem | The configured card-image file | It is a file-based card format; do not assume another system can use it unchanged. |
| PCSX2 folder card | As folders on the host filesystem | The configured card folder | PCSX2 says folder-card saves are isolated from management through the PS2 BIOS. |
The OPL user guide covers VMCs and per-game configuration. The PCSX2 Memory Cards documentation explains its image and folder modes, including folder-card limitations.
Back up an OPL virtual memory card
OPL stores virtual memory cards as image files in its VMC directory. Its per-game settings can specify VMC configuration, and the OPL guide describes VMC filenames based on a game ID. If you use OrbitPS2 Manager, its documented role is managing OPL library VMCs—not operating on saves through the ORBIT launcher.

- Never lose saved data again or have to constantly switch between smaller memory cards | 256MB (2043 Block) memory card is perfect even for the most demanding PlayStation 2 games
- Durable, compact design mimics look and feel of original memory cards and is compatible with all PS2 games and systems | Memory card features two switchable data banks to achieve 256 megabyte capacity
- Please Note: To reach full capacity of memory card dual 128 megabyte banks must be switched between | Front facing switch on card must be set to apropriate memory bank prior to turning on console
- Compatible with: PS2 (Playstation 2) consoles only | Will not work with backwards compatible fat PS3 consoles or PSONE (PSX) systems
- Package Contents: 1x PS2 memory card | Works on all models of PS2 including launch, fat and slim console variants
- Find the VMC directory and the card assigned to the game. Use your OPL configuration and per-game settings to identify the VMC image; do not select a file based only on a similar game title.
- Make a separate copy of the image. Copy it to another storage location, and give the copy a useful name that records the game or card assignment and the date. Keep the original in place.
- Preserve the assignment information. Record which game or games use that VMC, including any relevant per-game setting, so you can identify the right card later.
- Check the copy before relying on it. Confirm the copied file is present and has a plausible size, then leave the original untouched until you have verified the backup through an appropriate, documented restoration workflow.
OrbitPS2 Manager documents VMC sizes of 8, 16, 32, and 64 MB as configuration options. Those are supported choices, not a guarantee that a particular save or transfer will fit or work in every setup.

Back up PCSX2 saves in the configured card mode
PCSX2 supports memory-card image and folder modes. First determine which mode the configured card uses; then copy the corresponding file or folder while PCSX2 is closed. PCSX2’s documentation explains the distinction: folder mode stores saves as host-filesystem folders rather than inside a single .ps2 image, and those saves are not managed through the PS2 BIOS.

- TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
- BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
- IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
- NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
- WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.
- Identify the active card and its mode. Check PCSX2’s memory-card configuration so you do not back up an inactive card or the wrong format.
- Close PCSX2. Copy the configured card image, or the entire folder-card directory, to a separate location. Copying while the emulator is running could capture data while it is in use.
- Label the dated copy. Include the card or folder’s role and the date in its name. Keep a separate untouched copy rather than relying on a renamed or moved original.
- Verify before deleting or replacing anything. Check that the copied file or folder exists and that its contents appear intact. Keep the original until you have confirmed a restoration through a documented PCSX2 procedure.
PCSX2’s documentation states: “Instead of storing all the save data inside a single monolithic .ps2 file, they store all saves data inside a folder on the host’s file system.” The format distinction is why a folder-card backup must include the folder structure, not just a similarly named card image.
Keep saves organized and recoverable
Organization is useful only if it helps you identify the correct card without changing the save data. Keep the backup separate from the live card location, use consistent labels, and retain the relationship between each game and its assigned card.

Moving saves between OPL, PCSX2, and a real PS2
The available documentation does not establish direct interchangeability among ORBIT, OPL VMC images, PCSX2 card images, and PCSX2 folder cards. Do not rename or drop one system’s file into another system and assume the saves will appear. Use a transfer or conversion tool only when its documentation explicitly supports both the source and destination formats, and keep an untouched backup before attempting the move.
