Then use the Mod Manager’s profiles and save-linked options if they’re available in your installed version, and disable mods temporarily after an update if the game becomes unstable. These steps reduce risk, but no troubleshooting method guarantees that a modded campaign will load after its mods change.
Before changing mods, protect your campaign files
Exit the game before moving or resetting files. SEGA’s Steam troubleshooting instructions for Windows give the default roaming folder as C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly. Replace YOURUSERNAME with your Windows account name.

- Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly. - Copy the relevant folder to a clearly named backup location. SEGA’s example is a folder on the desktop; an external drive is an optional way to keep another copy, not a requirement.
- Keep the campaign saves in that backup. Do not delete or overwrite it while troubleshooting.
- Record which mods are active for each campaign, either in a written list or in a Mod Manager profile if your installed version offers profiles.
These instructions are for Steam on Windows. Folder locations and launcher behavior can differ with another storefront or platform.
Choose a way to track each campaign’s mod setup
There are two useful approaches. A Mod Manager profile can make a campaign’s active setup easier to identify, while a manual list and file backup do not depend on launcher features. They are not measured alternatives, and using both gives you a record as well as a separate copy of relevant files.

| Approach | Recoverability | Identifying a campaign’s setup | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mod Manager profile and save association | Profiles can help restore or share a configuration; these features do not replace a backup of saves and settings. | Can associate mods with a save, where supported by the installed version. | Depends on the current launcher build and its available options. |
| Manual mod list and separate file copy | Preserves a record and a copy of relevant game settings and saves. | Depends on the accuracy of your written list. | Does not depend on Mod Manager profile features. |
Check which Mod Manager features your build has
In a November 27, 2025 Early Access announcement, Creative Assembly described saved and shareable profiles, choosing a save for “Continue Campaign,” and automatically activating the mods associated with that save. The announcement described an Early Access build, not a guarantee of what is available in October 2026. Check the options in your installed launcher before relying on them. The announcement also said the original launcher would remain available while development continued and noted that the Early Access manager could have bugs.

After an update or crash, test with mods disabled
Creative Assembly warns that user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates. Its Hotfix 7.2.2 notice recommends disabling mods if a release is followed by performance or stability problems. SEGA also notes that Steam Workshop mods or changes to program files can interfere with operation, including when a mod has not been updated for the current game.

- Warhammer 40,000
- Disable mods temporarily and check whether the performance or stability issue changes.
- If the game launches cleanly, review each mod’s current compatibility information before restoring it.
- Re-enable mods selectively, changing one variable at a time, and see whether the campaign loads reliably before continuing a long-running game.
- Keep the original backup until you have confirmed the result.
This is a cautious way to isolate a problem, not a guaranteed recovery procedure. The official guidance does not establish that removing mods is harmless to every campaign or that a save will load after its mod setup changes.

SEGA’s Windows Steam troubleshooting procedure tests the game with a fresh roaming folder. Use it only after preserving your existing copy:
- Exit the game.
- Create a folder on the desktop for the backup, if you have not already made one.
- Move the Creative Assembly folder from
C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoaminginto that backup folder. - Start the game and test whether the problem is resolved.
- If the game works, copy the save folder from your backup back into the newly created Creative Assembly folder, following SEGA’s instructions.
Keep the backup until you have checked that your saves are present and the campaign behaves as expected. This is a troubleshooting test, not a universal fix for mod-related save problems.
