Make a fresh iPhone backup before you reset the device, try troubleshooting that could erase data, or hand it in for service. Then check the backup’s date and time: automatic iCloud backup is not proof that a recent copy exists, and a repair may erase the phone. Apple’s backup guide explains the available methods.
Choose iCloud or a computer
iCloud keeps the backup online and lets you restore during setup using a network connection. A computer backup is stored on a Mac or Windows PC and must be restored by reconnecting the phone to that computer. You can keep both kinds of backup as separate recovery options; Apple does not require you to choose only one.

| Method | What you need | How you restore |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | An Apple Account, available iCloud storage, Wi-Fi and power. | During iPhone setup, connect to a network and choose the relevant iCloud backup. |
| Mac or Windows computer | A computer with free disk space and a suitable USB data cable. An encrypted backup also requires its password. | Reconnect the iPhone to the computer and use Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes, as applicable. |
Neither method is established as universally faster, safer or more complete. The better fit depends on what you can access and what you need to recover.

- On the iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- If needed, turn on Back Up This iPhone, then tap Back Up Now.
- Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the backup runs. Apple says automatic iCloud backups happen daily when the iPhone is connected to power, locked and on Wi-Fi.
- Check the last-backup date and time on the iCloud Backup screen, and confirm that you have enough iCloud storage. If the time has not updated, do not assume the backup completed.
iCloud Backup stores device information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud, including settings, Home Screen layout and app organization. Some content syncs separately, so check that it has finished before erasing the phone.

Back up to a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a suitable cable and unlock the phone if prompted.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar. Finder backup is available on macOS 10.15 or later; on earlier macOS versions, use iTunes.
- In the General tab, select Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac.
- To encrypt the backup, select Encrypt local backup and create a password you can keep safe. Apple’s cited Windows guidance specifically says encryption is needed to preserve Health and Activity data in that workflow; if those data matter to you, use encryption and retain the password.
- Click Back Up Now. Once it finishes, check the displayed latest backup date.
Back up to a Windows PC
- Install and open Apple Devices if it is available on your PC. If not, use iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone by cable, unlock it if prompted, and select it in the app.
- Open the backup controls, choose to back up to the computer, and start the backup. If you need Health and Activity data, select the option to encrypt the local backup.
- Store the encryption password somewhere safe before proceeding. Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be recovered without its password.
- Confirm the computer app shows a completed backup and its date.
For current Windows-specific instructions, see Apple’s guide to backing up with Windows.
Know what may sync separately
An iCloud backup is not a copy of everything stored anywhere on your iPhone. Apple distinguishes device backup from content that syncs through iCloud services:
- Photos and videos: If iCloud Photos is on, your library uploads separately and is not part of the nightly iCloud Backup. If it is off, Camera Roll photos and videos may be included in the backup.
- Messages: With Messages in iCloud on, messages and attachments sync to iCloud rather than being included in the backup. With it off, they are saved in the next iCloud Backup.
- iCloud Drive: Files in the Files app stored in iCloud Drive sync through that service and are not included in iCloud Backup.
- Third-party apps and services: Some app data may need to be downloaded again from the app provider, and third-party service notes are not necessarily saved in iCloud Backup.
Before a reset or service appointment, inspect the relevant settings and wait for syncing to complete. Apple lists these distinctions in its guidance on information missing after an iCloud restore.

Prepare the iPhone before service
After the backup is verified, follow Apple’s current service-preparation instructions for your country, iOS version and service type. Apple’s Australia instructions, published September 17, 2026, say to confirm iCloud features are synced, turn off Apple Cash, remove Wallet cards and passes, check Parts and Service History, and prepare Find My according to the software version. For iOS or iPadOS 27 or later, that page describes Ready for Repair or Trade-In; for version 26 or earlier, it says to turn off Find My. Procedures and service policies can vary. See Apple’s preparation steps and follow the instructions that apply where you are.
If the phone is unresponsive, Apple says to complete as many preparation steps as possible; some can be done on the web. Do not skip the backup merely because you are taking the device in: a serviced iPhone may be erased.

- For a computer backup, connect the iPhone to the Mac or Windows PC and use Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes to restore the relevant backup. Enter its password if it is encrypted.
- After service, turn Find My back on if you disabled it.
Apple warns that if you set up the returned iPhone as new and later decide to restore an older iCloud backup, you will need to erase it again and restore as soon as possible: newer backups made after setting up as new can overwrite previously saved iCloud backups. See Apple’s restore instructions.
If the computer backup fails
- Update macOS or Windows and update Apple Devices or iTunes.
- Check the cable and USB connection, then confirm that the iPhone appears in Finder or the Windows app.
- Restart the iPhone and computer, then try the backup again.
- Check that the computer has enough free disk space.
- If the phone still is not recognized or the backup fails, try another computer or use iCloud.
- If a backup is corrupt or incompatible, update the computer and check for a software-version mismatch. Try an alternate backup or iCloud if available.
Do not delete an existing backup until you have confirmed that another usable backup is available. Apple’s computer backup troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
