Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Then choose your navigation app and destination, review traffic and alert settings, and decide which notifications you want to allow. The right setup depends on your phone, vehicle, country, and Android version.
1. Confirm Android Auto works before you leave
Put the car in Park and turn on its infotainment system before setting up or troubleshooting Android Auto. Google recommends allowing time to complete setup before driving. Check that both your phone and vehicle support the connection method you plan to use, and consult the vehicle manual if its pairing or infotainment controls are unclear. Google’s Android Auto setup guide covers initial setup.

Wired connection
Test the connection while parked, using a cable with connectors that fit both the phone and car. Google recommends a cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter) for wired Android Auto troubleshooting; this is guidance, not a guarantee of performance. Avoid USB hubs and extension cables. See Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
Wireless connection
First-time wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, and follow the vehicle’s instructions if the pairing controls differ. The car and phone must support wireless Android Auto; a vehicle that supports only a wired connection will not become wireless through a setting change. Google’s setup instructions explain the process.

2. Choose your navigation app and set the destination
Pick a supported navigation app and confirm the destination before moving. Android Auto can provide voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance where available. In Google Maps, review the route choices and check that Traffic is enabled if you want color-coded traffic conditions where supported. Google describes navigation and traffic features in its turn-by-turn navigation help.
Typing a destination on the car display requires the vehicle to be in Park. Enter it before departure, or use voice navigation when appropriate. Waze is another Android Auto option; Google documents voice destination entry and display use, but typing may require Park and voice or search availability can vary by country. See Google’s Waze and Android Auto guidance.
| Choice | What to consider before departure |
|---|---|
| Google Maps | Review route options and Traffic display. Incident alerts have a separate control in Maps settings. |
| Waze | Use the navigation interface you prefer; voice, search, and display features can vary by country. |
Neither app is the universal best choice for every driver: availability and features depend on location, vehicle display, and personal preference.

3. Set Google Maps incident alerts
To enable or disable incident alerts on the car display, open Google Maps in Android Auto, select Settings, scroll to Alert options, and toggle the alerts. The control affects whether Maps shows and sounds traffic incident alerts; it does not make every incident report available everywhere. Report types and display compatibility vary by country and vehicle. Details are in Google Maps’ incident-alert help.
4. Choose how much interruption to allow
Android’s Driving mode can reduce interruptions, while its notification filters let you choose which alerts are allowed. On supported Android versions, open Settings > Modes > Driving to configure it, including whether it turns on while driving. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, so labels and paths may differ by device and version. See Google’s Driving mode instructions.
There is no single established menu path for message previews, call notifications, or media autostart that applies across phones and vehicle systems. Review the Android Auto settings on your phone and the relevant infotainment settings in your car, then choose the interruption level that suits your trip.

5. Make directions easier to reach on screen
If you want directions and media controls to remain quickly accessible while another app is full-screen, enable Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings on your phone. This is an optional display preference; whether it suits you depends on how you use the car screen. Google documents the setting in its Android Auto quick controls help.
6. Check battery and charging guidance for an EV
Drivers of compatible EVs in supported regions may be able to configure the vehicle in Google Maps and confirm it in Android Auto to see predicted battery use and charging recommendations. Check that the vehicle is set up and that the recommendations appear before relying on them for a long route. Google cautions that traffic and weather can cause actual energy use to exceed predictions, so account for conditions and have a fallback plan. Availability depends on region and vehicle model. See Google Maps’ EV battery and charging guidance.
Final parked-car check
- Confirm Android Auto connects using the wired or wireless method you intend to use.
- Set the destination, review route choices, and check the traffic display before departure.
- Decide whether you want Maps incident alerts and Driving mode notification filters.
- If you use an EV, confirm any battery predictions or charging recommendations and plan for conditions that could change consumption.
