Before you hand over an iPhone for repair or move to a replacement, make a fresh backup and check that it completed. Apple supports iCloud and computer backups, and recommends keeping both as alternatives. Check separately whether Photos, Messages, and files are syncing to iCloud; encrypt a computer backup if you need Health, Activity, or Keychain data in that copy.
Choose where to keep the backup
Apple’s two backup methods create copies in different places. iCloud is the wireless option; a computer backup is stored locally on a Mac or Windows PC. You can make both, so a second copy is available if one cannot be used.

Make and verify a fresh backup
Do this before the repair appointment or replacement setup, rather than assuming an older automatic backup is current. Check the displayed date and time after the backup completes.

Back up to iCloud
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and power. For an automatic backup, leave it locked; Apple says these are the conditions for automatic iCloud backups.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Start a backup if needed, then check the date and time of the latest completed backup on that screen.

Back up to a Mac or Windows PC
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible data cable.
- On macOS 10.15 or later, use Finder. On a Windows PC, use Apple Devices or iTunes as applicable. Apple’s instructions use iTunes for earlier macOS versions.
- Select the iPhone in the app, choose the option to back up to the computer, and start the backup. Check the app’s completion status before disconnecting.
A wired backup requires a cable that fits both devices and supports data transfer. If you already have a suitable cable, no additional accessory is needed.

Encrypt a computer backup when needed
In the computer backup workflow, select Encrypt local backup and set a password if you want that copy to include Health, Activity, and Keychain data. Keep the password somewhere secure and retrievable: you will be asked for it when restoring the encrypted backup. Apple explains the difference between backup methods and their contents in its backup-methods guide and iCloud backup contents guide.

Check what syncs separately to iCloud
An iCloud device backup contains device information and settings that are not already synced to iCloud. iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and Messages in iCloud sync separately. When one of these services is enabled, its synced content is not duplicated in the device backup. Allow syncing time and confirm the relevant service is on; if it is off, photos or messages may instead be included in the device backup as applicable.

Before service, check the status of the iCloud services you rely on, not just the device-backup date. Apple’s guide to what iCloud backs up and its article on information missing after an iCloud restore explain these boundaries.
Restore the intended backup after service or on a replacement
- During iPhone setup, continue until the apps and data transfer screen appears.
- Choose a restore from iCloud or from a Mac or PC, depending on where your intended backup is stored.
- Compare the available backup’s date and size before selecting it. For an encrypted computer backup, enter its password.
- For an iCloud restore, keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while content downloads.
Follow Apple’s restore instructions for the applicable setup path.

Important: avoid overwriting the iCloud backup you intend to restore
A device returned from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider may need to be restored. If you set up the iPhone as new and later decide to use an earlier iCloud backup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone before restoring it. Apple also warns that new iCloud backups made after setting up as new can overwrite the saved backup you meant to use. Identify the backup you want promptly and avoid creating a new iCloud backup over it until you have decided what to restore. See Apple’s restore guidance.

If a computer backup fails
- Update the Mac or PC and the Apple Devices app or iTunes, as applicable.
- Reconnect the iPhone with a cable and check whether it appears in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
- Restart both devices, then try the backup again.
- If you see an insufficient-space warning, free space on the computer.
- If the problem persists, try another computer or use iCloud as an alternative. A corrupted or incompatible backup may require a different backup.
