What to back up before changing source files
There are two separate things to protect: the uploaded video files and the playlist’s identity and order. Google Takeout is the official bulk-export route for videos uploaded to your YouTube account. Back up your uploads with Google Takeout
- Sign into the correct Google account. Use the account associated with the channel. If videos appear to be missing, check whether the channel is linked to a Brand Account and switch to the Brand Account used to upload them.
- Select YouTube data in Google Takeout. Deselect unrelated products if you want a smaller export, then request the archive. Google describes delivery by email download link or to cloud destinations such as Drive, Dropbox, Box, or OneDrive.
- Wait for the archive and download it. Google warns that changes made between the export request and archive creation may not be included, so do not assume the archive reflects activity during that interval.
- Inspect the archive before editing source files. YouTube videos are exported in their original format or as MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio. On a desktop, open
archive_browser.htmlto review the archive format and contents, and check that the expected recordings are present. - Keep a safe copy with enough space. Google says downloading directly to a computer is easiest in most cases. You may also copy the downloaded archive to an external drive or another safe storage location; choose one with enough space for the export.
Only proceed with source-file changes after you have inspected the export and confirmed it contains the videos you need.

Preserve the playlist title, URL, and order
- Open the playlist in YouTube and record its title and URL.
- Write down the video URLs in the order they appear. Include any notes that will help distinguish entries with similar titles.
- Keep this inventory alongside the downloaded archive or in another safe location.
YouTube documents saving a playlist to your library and managing its entries, including reordering. Those actions are useful for finding and organizing a playlist in YouTube, but the cited help does not establish that they create a local copy of the videos or export a playlist manifest. When a YouTube Studio download helps
Studio offers a per-video download for a video uploaded by the signed-in creator. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the video, open its menu, and choose the download option. YouTube’s help describes the resulting MP4 as 720p or 360p, depending on video size.

This is useful for a spot check or for downloading an individual upload, but it is not a substitute for checking the Takeout archive when you need a bulk backup. Do not assume a Studio download is the original source file or matches the source’s full quality.

A Studio download option is unavailable
YouTube lists several restrictions: the video may have been removed, may have a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, may use a preapproved audio track, or may already have been downloaded five times in the preceding 24 hours. Studio downloads are also limited to videos uploaded by the signed-in account.
The downloaded Studio video looks lower quality than expected
YouTube’s documented Studio download is MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. For Takeout, inspect the actual archive contents rather than assuming either route is identical to your local source file.

The playlist is saved, but the files are not on the computer
Saving a playlist to the library is for access within YouTube. It does not establish that video files were downloaded. Use Takeout for a bulk export of your uploads and keep a separate ordered URL inventory for the playlist.
