Do this before any factory reset: a reset erases data on the phone, and not everything is guaranteed to restore.
1. Check your Pixel’s backup settings

Connect the phone to the internet and make sure it has enough battery for the backup.

Open Settings > Google services > Backup. Menu names and locations vary by Android version; if you do not see that path, search Settings for Backup.

Check that the displayed Google Account is the one you intend to use, then open Backup details. Review which categories are included and their status rather than assuming every type of data is covered.

Google’s Android backup guidance lists common device-backup categories such as apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Which data is available can vary, and not every app can back up or restore all of its settings and data. Google’s Android backup and restore guidance explains the categories and limitations.
2. Run the backup and confirm its status
If the backup screen offers Back up now, tap it. Return to Backup details afterward and check that the categories you care about are selected and show as backed up or saved. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours; that is a possible maximum, not a promise that every backup takes that long. Google One’s device-backup help describes the process and status checks.
If the backup will not start or appears stuck

Check the Google One app and available account storage if the backup reports a storage or app problem.

For files or photos that have not uploaded, use the relevant app to upload them manually and verify they appear in the account.
A backup that is still in progress is not confirmation that all selected data is safely stored. Wait for the status to update before taking a step that could erase the phone.

3. Verify data stored outside the device backup
Device backup and syncing in Google services are related but distinct. Google notes that photos, videos, and contacts may be handled separately from the device backup, so check the destination for the specific content you need.

Photos and videos: Open Google Photos and confirm the relevant items have synced to the account.

Contacts: Check Google Contacts for the contacts you need. Contacts saved only on the device or another account may not be in the Google Account you are backing up.

Files: Check Google Drive, or the appropriate service, for important documents and other files.

App-specific information: Check the app’s own backup or export instructions for data you cannot afford to lose. App backup coverage is not universal.

Google’s Pixel backup and restore instructions distinguish device backup from content stored in services such as Photos and Contacts.

4. Try lower-risk update troubleshooting first
Once you have checked the backup, start with troubleshooting that does not erase the phone. Depending on the symptom, Google’s general Pixel guidance includes restarting the phone, checking system and app updates, and using Safe Mode to help isolate problems caused by downloaded apps. The applicable steps can vary by Pixel model and Android version; follow the relevant instructions in Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance.
If you are troubleshooting because an update has not arrived, check Settings > System > Software update and follow the status shown on the phone. Pixel updates roll out gradually, and timing depends on the device and carrier; Google says an update may take a few weeks to reach a device. Backing up protects data but does not make an update arrive sooner or fix an update problem. See Google’s Pixel update availability guidance.
5. Verify before a factory reset
A factory data reset removes all data from the phone. Google says data stored in a Google Account can be restored, but apps and their associated data are uninstalled. Do not reset until you have reviewed backup status, confirmed separate Photos, Contacts, and Drive content where relevant, and checked critical app-specific data. Google advises backing up before resetting to fix phone issues; its Pixel guidance for restarting or crashing problems explains the reset consequence.
