Yes—you can install the original 2003 Windows version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on a modern PC through Steam or GOG. GOG lists Windows 11 and offers an offline installer; Steam also sells the game, but its game page still shows legacy Windows XP/Vista requirements. Neither listing guarantees identical results on every PC. Start with a clean install, test the game, and only then consider community widescreen modifications.
Choose Steam or GOG
Both storefronts currently list the original PC game. Their published details are not a controlled comparison of compatibility, so there is no established Steam-versus-GOG winner for Windows 11.

Store listings can change, and storefront requirements do not ensure that every PC, driver, or Windows update will behave the same way. Choose based on the storefront and installation option you prefer, rather than assuming one edition is universally more compatible.

- Buy or access the game from the storefront you chose and follow that storefront’s current installation instructions. For GOG, use Galaxy or download the offline installer from your account if you prefer not to use the client.
- Launch the game once before adding fixes or replacing files. This gives you a baseline and helps distinguish an installation problem from an issue introduced by a modification.
- If the game does not start or behaves unexpectedly, consult the storefront’s current support information before downloading compatibility files from unrelated sites.
The original manual documents installation from DVD and an offer to install DirectX 9.0b. Those directions describe the game’s original environment; they are historical documentation, not a modern Windows 11 troubleshooting procedure. Read the original manual.

Want widescreen? Treat it as an optional community modification
The game’s original display setup may not suit a modern widescreen monitor. A community guide describes a method for retail, Steam, and GOG versions, but it requires multiple edits and files and is specific to the game version and target resolution. It is not official support.
- Make a backup of the game folder and the original executable before changing anything.
- Follow the Deadly Stream widescreen guide for the instructions and files that match your edition and chosen resolution.
- Use the guide’s procedure to configure
swkotor.ini, modify the executable with UniWS, and install the matching interface files. - Launch the game and check that both the display and interface are usable. If the result is broken, restore your backups rather than layering on unrelated downloads.
Because the method relies on third-party tools and files, its links and instructions may change. Do not assume a file or step intended for one version or resolution applies to another.

If the game opens in a window or will not start
Symptoms and workarounds vary by setup. A GOG community thread, “Kotor will not go windowed,” contains individual reports from different Windows configurations, including a 2026 user-described INI change. These posts are anecdotal, not official compatibility guidance or a tested fix for other PCs. You can compare your symptom with the discussion, but back up configuration files before changing them and do not assume one user’s workaround will solve your issue.
